Tweet From Pope Francis May people see the Gospel in our lives: in our generous and faithful love for Christ and our brothers and sisters. 8/13
G reetings my good friends in Christ,
Every year at this time, families send their children off to college. It’s always a sad time, a parting of ways, parents worrying and children excited. Let us pray for all your children wherever they are, bless them, protect them, lead them in the Way of the Lord.
The news this summer has been filled with terror attacks, mass murders, and the killing of individuals. So many people today are lost. Many have lost their faith in a God who loves all. Some are angry with everything, often never acknowledging their own failures and sins, but always blaming the other.
How can we turn around and seek the truth and goodness in life again? How can each one of us promote peace and harmony when so many have abandoned God? It is easy to lose hope and heart in others, but the Way of the Lord will never be an easy journey; it involves suffering. Many shy away from having to suffer for the Lord. Who wants to suffer I ask? No one, but part of this journey for which Jesus prepared us involves the very thing we all run away from; the cross of suffering.
In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus challenges us about striving for the narrow gate. Jesus is the narrow gate. I honestly think every single person wants happiness, even though many have no idea how to grasp it. They believe that happiness comes from power and independence from others, or having material wealth and status. But not so! The narrow gate of Jesus Christ involves discipline and suffering. Total happiness is possible by perseverance and a deep determination to live like Jesus lived here on this earth. Jesus wants us all to be shining examples of love in action in our relationships, with those we don't like, with our family members that we are not at peace with, with our friends that we find so difficult to forgive, and with total strangers that we condemn because they are somehow different from ourselves.
Jesus wants us to be different, He wants us to ''strive eagerly for the greatest...gift,'' (1 Corinthians 12:13) which is love -- love from the heart. Then, and only then, will we slip through the narrow gate and enjoy God’s heavenly rewards at the great banquet feast in heaven.
''And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God.'' (Luke 13:29)
Many people today find the narrow gate of Jesus Christ too difficult to embrace, too disciplined to survive. We live in a society where so many strive for the easy way of life, yet so many are depressed, angry, bored, judgmental, mean, hateful, selfish and self-centered. The ''I'' mentality prevails: “What am I going to get out of it?”
''Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell YOU, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough." (Luke 13:24)
This is the command of Jesus to all of us this Sunday and every day of our lives, the question is...
ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH?
IS YOUR FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST STRONG, or are you running away from the challenge by thinking that life is easier another way!!!
Think about it, and reflect about it. Maybe there are areas in our lives that need change. Maybe the way you discipline yourself and your children needs re-organizing for the good.
Amen.
A ll the school's faculty and staff have been
preparing for the opening of a new school year. Let us all pray for a beautiful, prayer filled year for our students, parents, administration, faculty, staff and clergy. May Our Lady Queen of Heaven, and mother of us all, protect us and guide us in peace and harmony.
Welcome to any visitors here this week, especially those of other faith traditions. Prayers for all our homebound and elders in our parish and neighboring cities. God bless you all for your commitment to your faith.
In Christ's peace and love,
Fr. Gerard

Aid To Flood Victims in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
August 27-28
We might be struggling with a drought here in California, but the people of Louisiana, especially the Baton Rouge area, have had more than enough water! What was originally predicted to be a summer rain storm ended up
bringing historic, hurricane amounts of water to the area. Whole areas of Baton Rouge are underwater with more rain predicted.
Laura Ricard (Bible Study Leader, Eucharistic Minister and Lector here at Assumption) texted the accompanying picture of her nephew Ken Williams’ home. Notice the water up to the doorknob! He and his wife and four daughters had to evacuate this home and they have no flood insurance. Laura’s 82 year old aunt and another nephew and his family are also in a similar situation.
With your help a donation will be sent directly to Laura’s family members. The remaining monies collected will be sent to the Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Charities for distribution to flood victims. Please make checks payable to Assumption of the BVM Church with “Flood Victims” noted on the check. Please be generous in the second collection next weekend.

DID YOU KNOW? Pool safety is about more than swimming Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat during the summer. Parents should teach their children about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfortable situations. Alt-hough you may be watching closely to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t forget about when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. For more information and a copy of the article called “Know the Rules…Summer Safety Tips to Teach Children” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited, email: [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.
