OCTOBER ROSARY DEVOTION at Holy Name

The month of October each year is dedicat-ed to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7th. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in grat-

itude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful. Join us Monday-Saturday 6:30 PM, except Wednesday 7:30 PM after Benediction, in the Chapel.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Effective November 6, 2013, our Wednesday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will now end with Benediction at 12 Noon.

You are invited to an Informational Evening on the Diaconate The Archdiocesan Office of Formation for the Permanent Diaconate is sponsoring Informational Evenings for men considering the possibility of serving the Church as Permanent Deacons. If you have ever con-sidered a vocation to permanent Diaconate, you (and your wife, if you are married) are invited to attend one of the meetings on Monday, October 28th from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM at St. Isabella, San Rafael, Monday, November 18th 7:30 to 9:00 PM , St Mary’s Cathedral, and Monday, November 25th 7:30 to 9:00 PM St. Gregory, San Mateo. Please see flyers posted on the bulletin boards for further details. Questions may be directed to the Formation Office at (415) 614-5531.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Today (October 20, 2013) is World Mission Sunday . Cath-olics of the world unite at Mass to recommit ourselves to our vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries. More than a century ago, the Church in Europe shared its goods with the mission territories in the New World. In those early years of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the United States received almost two-thirds of the first collection taken up for the Mis-sions in 1822. Now, US Catholics are the largest supporters of the daily work and service that take place in the 1,150 mission dioceses and territories around the world, covering two-thirds of the globe. In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as missionaries. This year’s World Mission Sunday theme is “Do Good On Earth,” from the words of St. Therese of Lisieux, co-patron of the Mis-sions. We are called to the Eucharistic Celebration and to be mission-ary by putting our faith into action in support of the work of missionar-ies— like Sister Clara who rescues girls from human trafficking in India, giving them a loving home. Your prayers and generous gifts to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith on World Mission Sunday support the tireless work of so many priests, religious and lay leaders around the world as they offer practical, emotional and spiritual care to communities, children and families in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances.

FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Congratulations to Bill Bogdan upon his election to Grand Knight at Corpus Christi Knights of Columbus Council 11300. Bill is one of our Lectors and a mem-

ber of our Finance Council. He will be speaking at all the masses this weekend, giving us some information about the Knights of Columbus and their mission. It’s just the right time as we celebrate World Mission Sunday this weekend. I am reminded of a story of a missionary family who was home on furlough. One Sunday they went to one of their sup-porting churches and were dressed in unclean, wrinkled, old clothing. This caused quite a stir in the church members. After the service, one of the deacons asked them, "Why are you dressed so shabbily?" The father of the family replied, "Why, these are the clothes your church so 'graciously' collected and sent to us. So we thought you would appreciate us wearing them while we were here!" Although our thoughts this Sunday go to the dedicated mission-aries among the poor and marginalized half a world away and our ongoing support to their particular mission, we look as well at our local and individual missions here in our community. The mission of the Knights of Columbus could be ours too here in our parish. Mrs. Elisa “Lee” Kennedy, after spending 97 years in this passing world, will continue her mission in the eternal world promised by our Heavenly Father. Lee, as we fondly called her, was a long time parish-ioner and former president of our Holy Name Senior Club. Her funeral mass was held last Wednesday, October 16, 2013, here at Holy Name Church followed by a burial at the Holy Cross Cemetery. As I continue my mission here at Holy Name, I was tempted to complain about the upkeep of our church properties that I have to deal with every now and then, and it seems they are endless. More recent-ly, as the city prescribed us to do, we have fixed the sidewalks of our church, rectory and school. But I cannot complain anymore as I think of the many works and reconstruction the people in my hometown of Bohol in the Philippines will be dealing with after that devastating 7.2 earthquake hit our province this week. Imagine, houses and buildings destroyed, bridges collapsed, roads impassable, and to top it all, his-torical churches turned into rubble. Amidst all this, our faith is strong and there seems to be a beacon of hope. My thoughts are not in the rubble but on the images of hope and strength. In this month of the Rosary, Mother Mary never fails and is showing she is always there for us. For instance, at the sanctuary of one church in Loon that collapsed into pieces stands the only rem-nant that was left, the statue of the Blessed Mother, un-damaged. The façade of one of the oldest churches in the Philippines collapsed, but the image of the Immaculate Mary stood still. In the photo below, a statue of St. Anne remains intact while Bac-layon Church turned into ruins. There is always a sign of hope, a test of faith and the proof of love. And there are more miracles to come!

ATTENTION: CHOIR MEMBERS We are announcing a new class at the Holy Name Conservatory of Music for those who are members of the choir and those who wish to join the choir. This class will meet on Tuesdays in the Pastoral Center (former Convent) from 5:30-6:30 pm with Bay Area vocalist and HN Conservatory faculty Shannon Wolfe, who holds a Master of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in opera and chamber music performance. The class is open to both men and women and will focus on improving tone quality, range, sight-reading, ear-training and overall musicianship. Music is a central component to the services and Masses at Holy Name and our aim is to produce a happy and robust choir so that we may celebrate and worship with both our hearts and voices to our best ability. The class will meet for one hour and will include smaller break-out sessions so that you will receive individual one-on-one attention. Come for the whole class to watch, learn and participate. Registration is a must. Cost is $20 per person.

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 18; 1-8

A lesson in prayer Philip eyed his sizzling fish and rotated the skewer, giving the

other side a few more minutes to cook. He picked his way back to the group, nearly stepping on Peter’s outstretched hand. The day’s jour-ney had tired Peter out. When he lay back to rest his eyes, he had fallen fast asleep.

Most of the disciples were sitting in a circle around Jesus. He seemed to never tire, even now after the long walk. The day’s goal had been to reach a camp at the edge of the River Jordan. Sore mus-cles and aching feet had brought many suggestions for an earlier and easier goal. But Jesus had held the disciples to it. They had reached the destination and Jesus was still full of energy, intently talking about prayer.

James stuck his scraped foot out in front of Jesus, “I prayed that we could have stopped at Beth Shan two hours ago.”

“You prayed once.” Jesus declared. “You must pray unceasing-ly. You must never become discouraged. You must be determined just as I was resolved to reach this camp today.”

Philip suddenly remembered his fish and hurried back to the fire. James bent over his foot and carefully applied a small dab of oil to the red crease which had been cut by his sandal strap.

Jesus began to tell them a story about the judge who refused to hear a widow’s complaint. This was strange because judges were supposed to fear God and defend the oppressed. Widows, who had no means of support, were often the most oppressed. The judge took sides with her creditor opponent. The widow persisted to such an extent that the judge finally gave in to her relentless determination and granted her request.

Andrew was back with his fish on a plate. He carefully picked around the bones and forked into the steaming white meat. He looked up, still chewing, and asked Jesus: “So the bad judge finally gave her justice?”

“Yes,” Jesus said, “but how much more will God give you jus-tice?”

“Even when we endure the sufferings the prophets predict at the end time?” Bartholemew asked, joining into the discussion.

“Yes,” Jesus said, “if you do not fall away from the truth and if you pray with the same faith and fervor as did the widow in the story.”

The smell of more fish cooking over the fire roused Peter and he lumbered to his feet. The big fisherman approached Matthew who was crouched by the fire, keeping an eye on his three fish. Peter smiled and raised his eyebrows in an invitation for Matthew to share his food.

“They’re mine!” Matthew said, “Pray for your own,” Peter looked hungrily over at Jesus and showed the group his

empty hands. Everyone showed their empty hands and they all laughed.

“Okay, but just one,” Matthew relented. Peter grinned.

Jesus invites us to pray like the widow. From our unceasing prayer will come faith. This faith will then make us strong enough to carry our own cross when the time comes.

The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve

By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

Ques on: Why is a solid understanding of the liturgy im-portant for each of us? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: At the Last Supper, on the night when He was betrayed, our Savior ins tuted the eucharis c sacrifice of His Body and Blood.

He did this in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the Cross throughout the centuries un l He should come again, and so to entrust to His beloved spouse, the Church, a memorial of His death and resurrec on: a sacrament of love, a sign of uni-ty, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is eat-en, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.

The Church, therefore, earnestly desires that Christ's faithful, when present at this mystery of faith, should not be there as strangers or silent spectators; on the contrary, through a good understanding of the rites and prayers they should take part in the sacred ac on conscious of what they are doing, with devo-

on and full collabora on.

They should be instructed by God's word and be nourished at the table of the Lord's body; they should give thanks to God; by offering the Immaculate Vic m, not only through the hands of the priest, but also with him, they should learn also to offer themselves; through Christ the Mediator, they should be drawn day by day into ever more perfect union with God and with each other, so that finally God may be all in all.

Editor’s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Cons tu on on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater par cipa on of the laity in the liturgy. We are now reviewing the cons tu on’s second chapter, “The Most Sacred Mystery of the Eucharist.” Future chapters in Sacrosanctum Concilium will look at "The Other Sacraments and Sacramentals," "The Divine Office," "The Liturgical Year," "Sacred Music," and "Sacred Art".
