Message from the Rector

Dear People of God, A Blessed Christmas Season to all! How quickly the Advent days gave way to Christmas morn! The gifts have been opened and the wrappings have been bundled and tossed away. However, did we ever consider the Christmas wrappings as truly part of the gift? I share with you a beautiful story so appropriate this Christmas weekend and this day—The Feast of the Holy Family. Read . . . Reflect . . . and pass it on. The story goes that some time ago a mother punished her five year old daughter for wasting a roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and she became ever more upset when the child used the gold paper to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift box to her mother the next morning and said, “This is for you, Momma.” The mother was embarrassed by her earlier over reaction, but her anger flared again when she opened the box and found it was empty. She spoke to her daughter in a harsh manner. “Don’t you know, young lady, when you give someone a present there’s supposed to be something inside the package?” She had tears in her eyes and said, “Oh, Momma, it’s not empty! I blew kisses into it until it was full.” The mother was crushed. She fell on her knees and put her arms around her little girl, and she begged her forgiveness for her thoughtless anger. The mother kept that gold box by her bed for all the years of her life. Whenever she was discouraged or faced difficult problems she would open the box and take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there. In a very real sense, each of us, as human beings, have been given a Golden box filled with unconditional love and kissed from our children, family, friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold. I also share with you the following as we bring 2019 to a close. Wonderful commandments to live by as we usher in 2020. Daniel Berrigan once wrote a wonderful little book entitled, “Ten Commandments for the Long Haul.” It was intended as spiritual food for those who search—who seek direction and meaning in their lives. Commandment #1 - Acknowledge our helplessness. We are the creature, not the Creator. Proper living begins with the words, “I am not God.” Commandment #2 - Pray prayers of helplessness, gratitude and praise. Pray from our weaknesses. “Lord, do for me what I cannot do for myself.” Commandment #3 - Welcome and accept the present moment. Life is what happens to us while we’re planning our life. Don’t let the pressures of life steal the present moment from us. If we are not happy now—when? Commandment #4 - Give yourself permission to be inadequate. Don’t be too hard on yourself, and especially on others. God doesn’t keep us from falling and failing, but God always forgives us when we do. Commandment #5 - If we’re critical without being loving we’re destructive. If we’re loving without being firm we’re weak. Commandment #6 - Forgive your past. Commandment #7 - Imitate Christ. Commandment #8 - Bathe in the goodness of life. We have divine permission to be happy! Commandment #9 - Accept aging. Aging is an art form. Commandment #10 - Serve the r ight God. Don’t bow to any false god created in the image and likeness of our own ten-sions and bitterness. Blessings and joy in the New Year, Fr. Greg

Order of Worship Sign of Peace & Communion from the Cup During Cold & Flu Season:

As we enter this cold and flu season, it is important to recognize that some people are especially susceptible to the viruses that can be spread by contact and that some immune systems are very sensitive. Please understand that some people may choose not to shake hands during the Sign of Peace, but might simply greet you with a smile. If you do decide to come to church for Mass, please remember that frequent and thorough hand - washing, refraining from physical contact during the Sign of Peace, and refraining from receiving communion from the Chalice can help prevent the spread of germs.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON

My Son, why have you done this? My Son, why have you done this? You see that your father and I, with great sorrow, have been searching for you. And why is it you have sought me? Did you not know I must be there in my father’s own house, and about his business?

Angel’s Carol John Rutter

Have you heard the sound of the angel voices ringing out so sweetly, ringing out so clear? Have you seen the star shining out so brightly as a sign from God that Christ the Lord is here? Have you heard the news that they bring from heaven to the humble shepherds who have waited so long? Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels sing their joyful song.

He is come in peace in the winter’s stillness, like a gentle snowfall in the gentle night; He is come in joy like the sun at morning filling the world with radiance and with light. He is come with love as the child of Mary; in a simple stable we have seen His birth: Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing ‘peace on earth’.

He will bring new light to a world in darkness, like a bright star shining in the skies above; He will bring new hope to the waiting nations when he comes to reign in purity and love. Let the earth rejoice at the Saviour’s coming; let the heavens answer with the joyful morn: Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing ‘Christ is born.’

Liturgy SALVATION IN DAILY LIFE This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes on the first Sunday after Christmas Day. Today’s feast celebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his entire family life) has brought saving significance into the daily rhythms of our human family life.

The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human family—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human relationships. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph took to protect his young family from danger and to nurture them within the larger family of faith of their time. PRAYER FOR FAMILIES

We bless your name, O Lord, for sending your own incarnate Son, to become part of a family, so that, as he lived his life, he would experience its worries and its joys.

We ask you, Lord, to protect and watch over this family, so that in the strength of your grace its members may enjoy prosperity, possess the priceless gift of your peace, and, as the Church alive in the home, bear witness in this world to your glory.

We ask this thought Christ our Lord. Amen.

Every ten years, the residents of Oberammergau Germany perform the Passion Play, a dramatic recreation of Our Lord’s last days on earth. First produced over 4 centuries ago, it is a spiritual experience that lasts a lifetime. Our pilgrimage includes visits to Munich, Salzburg, Vienna and Budapest, with Fr. John Boivin as our spiritual director. Check out our Cathedral website for more details or phone Isabel Juan at 312-664-1414.

Feast of Santo Nino. Saturday, January 11 at 11AM. Main Presider: Rev. Louis J. Cameli. Includes the Cathedral Filipino Singers (CFS). Gathering time at the church is 10:30 a.m.

CFN celebrates the annual Feast of Santo Nino with the venerated statue of the Child Jesus of Prague. Devotion to the Child Jesus is ubiquitous and observed with reverence around the world. On January 11, the Santo Nino de Cebu, a newly acquired image from the Philippines, will join the CFN celebration.

The original statue was a gift from Ferdinand Ma-gellan in 1521 to the Queen Humamay, wife of Rajah (King) Hu-mabon. At the Basilica Minore the Santo Nino de Cebu is the oldest surviving Catholic relic in the Philippines along with the Magellan cross. CFN Feast of Sto Nino includes Illinois and Indiana devotees, who bring their Santo Nino stat-ues for blessings during the Mass. All are welcome to attend CFN events. For more details, [email protected] or 312-933-4762.

FRENCH TOAST BREAKFAST

Bonjour! Our Parish Life Commission invites you to our annual French Toast Breakfast on Sunday, January 21 from 9am to 12:30pm. For a bargain price of $5 for adults and $3 for those 12 and younger, you can enjoy this treat from the kitchen of our neighbor, Sunny Side Up.

THANK YOU FOR THE GLOVES

Our November appeal for new winter gloves was a success again! Almost 400 pairs of gloves were donated by caring souls like yourselves. They were given to the guests on the first Thursday of December, and the additional gloves were given to the staff at Catholic Charities for their many clients. As you feel the chill and cold of these winter days, be comforted to know that your kindness warmed many hands.

THANK YOU FOR THE GIFT CARDS

‘Christmas in October’ has become a tradition in our parish life. No verbal announcement is made, just the bulletin article. We seek 250, $10 Walgreen gift cards to give as a Christmas gift to the 130 dine-in guests and to the 80 people who receive a take-away-bag. We reached our goal and surpassed it by 25 cards! They were presented to the guests at our last supper before Christmas, on Friday, December 20th. On behalf of our parish Human Concerns Commission, our guests and our volunteers, Thank you!

FRIENDS OF FR. AUGUSTUS Join us for our next meeting at 12 p.m. in the rectory on Sunday, January 19. Fr. Bill Woestman will share with us the conditions necessary for a miracle to be accepted to advance the beatification cause for Fr. Gus.
