Message from the Rector

Dear People of God, Our Lenten Journey continues and I was recently struck by the following phrase— “Lent . . . We are called to believe.” What does this mean? Believe in what? For what? The word “believe” comes from the root word “to give one’s heart to.” This is the root meaning of the word “believe.” How fascinating! What do I give my heart to in my daily living? What do I need to stop doing this Lent? What do I need to start doing this Lent? No matter how we may think, act, or feel too many of us worry too much ! I share with you the following aimed specifically toward parents, but truly applicable to people of all ages.

WORRY Is there a magic cutoff period when offspring become accountable for their own actions? Is there a wonderful moment when parents can become detached spectators in the lives of their children and shrug, “It’s their life,” and feel nothing? When I was in my twenties, I stood in the hospital corridor waiting for the doctors to put a few stitches in my daughter’s head. I asked, “When do you stop worrying?” the nurse said, “When they get out of the accident stage.” My Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing. When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little chair in a classroom and heard how one of my children talked incessantly, disrupted the class and was headed for a career making license plates. As if to read my mind, a teacher said, “Don’t worry, they all go through this stage and then you can sit back, relax and enjoy them.” My dad just smiled faintly and said nothing. When I was in my forties, I spent a lifetime waiting for the phone to ring, the cars to come home, the front door to open. A friend said, “They’re trying to find themselves. Don’t worry, in a few years, you can stop worrying. They’ll be adults.” My dad just smiled faintly and said nothing. By the time I was 50, I was sick and tried of being vulnerable. I was still worrying over my children, but there was a new wrinkle. There was nothing I could do about it. My Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing. I continued to anguish over their failures, be tormented by their frustrations and absorbed in their disappointments. My friends said that when my kids got married I could stop worrying and lead my own life. I wanted to believe that, but I was haunted by my dad’s warm smile and his occasional, “You look pale. Are you alright? Call me the minute you get home. Are you depressed about something?” Can it be that parents are sentenced to a lifetime of worry? Is concern for one another handed down like a torch to blaze the trail of human frailties and the fears of the unknown? Is concern a curse, or is it a virtue that elevates us to the highest form of life? One of my children became quite irritable recently, saying to me, “Where were you? I’ve been calling for three days and no one answered. I was worried. I smiled a warm smile. The torch has been passed. Life races onward much too quickly and our Lenten journey is nearly half over. “Lent . . . We are called to believe” and trust. May we always give our heart to the Lord—and drop worry along the side of the road. Lenten blessings, Fr. Greg

Liturgy LECTORS

Proclaimers of the Word of God The Lector is a proclaimer of the Word of God, and also a minister of hospitality by extending a welcome as a commentator to those gathered for worship. Our goal at Holy Name Cathedral is that hearing the Word of God proclaimed by our Lectors will open wide the doors to Christ for the faithful because of the love of scripture that stems from their ministry.

To become a Lector you need to be a Catholic in good standing having received the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation), be at least age 16 or older, be a parishioner and have a desire to share your faith and an encounter with Christ through the words of scripture.

Contact Barbara Ramberg, Lector Coordinator, at [email protected] or Father Marek Smolka, Director of Liturgy, [email protected]

The next Lector training will take place on Sunday, March 15, at 3:30 PM

Other dates will be provided at the training.

THE CATHEDRAL’S RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS

For all of the faithful participating during all Masses and liturgies:

♦ Refrain from physical contact during the Sign of Peace as well as the welcome greeting (note: the Sign of Peace and the welcome can be exchanged without physical contact).

♦ We will no longer distribute the Precious Blood to the faithful at Communion time.

♦ Given the frequency of direct contact with saliva in the distribution of Holy Communion on the tongue, each individual should receive Holy Communion reverently in open hands.

♦ Refrain from holding hands during the Lord’s Prayer.

♦ Holy Water will not be available from the communal fonts.

♦ If you are sick or are experiencing symptoms of sickness, you are not obliged to attend Mass.

Faith Formation

Holy Name Cathedral Chicago, Illinois 7

MUSICAL PRAISES AMID RIVER NORTH Amid the bustle of shoppers and tourist in River North, there was meditation and song within the sacred space of St. James Chapel, Quigley Center. Approximately 60 adults gathered to reflect on the Lenten songs and hymns performed by the St. Francis Borgia Trio. Accompanied by Pianist Anthony Woldeit and violinist Amanda Rau, Dawn Swanson, assistant to Fr. Greg Sakowicz, sang 20 songs of Lenten reflection. Integrating meditation, written by Ms. Swanson, as well as instrumental pieces, the trio offered 2 hours of contemplative departure from daily distractions. Next Lenten Concert occurs at St. Francis Borgia, 8033 W. Addison, Chicago, IL, March 28 at 3:30 p.m.

RCIA: FIRST SCRUTINY Ten persons enter the final stage towards full communion with the Catholic Church. The Elect, who are those preparing for baptism, will be given copies of the Creed. They will listen as the assembly professes the Faith, that the Elect will proclaim just prior to the Easter Vigil. They, along with the candidates, will be dismissed and participate in an intense spiritual exercise of self examination.

As these persons prepare for the Easter Vigil, we are currently meeting with 15 other adults who are beginning the process of discernment. If you know someone who wishes to join us, contact Dr. Ken Ortega.

Consider adding a Scripture-reflective journey as a Lenten practice. Learn the historical, literal, and contextual significance of the Sunday Mass Readings, and how they can help live a strong faith life. We meet every

Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., in the rectory. We supply the Bibles!

WANT TO PUT FAITH IN ACTION?

Want to be part of the selection of events and programs for adult faith formation? Consider discerning for the Faith Formation Commission as we invite parishioners for consider leadership.

Be it lunch, dinner or after theater, The Italian Village will welcome you and feed you abbondanza. One way to express our gratitude to the owners and staff for their 14 years of service is to stop in to enjoy lunch, dinner or an after theater meal, and personally thank them for their generosity to our Supper guests!

ANNUAL LENTEN FISH DINNER

CARING FOR THE CAREGIVER SUNDAY, MARCH 22 AT 3:00 PM This ministry recognizes the challenges faced by individuals providing care to a spouse, child or another family member who is seriously ill or aging. Caregiving is a journey that has high points and low points along its path. The ministry offers resources to caregivers, such as practical information and expertise from caregivers, emotional and spiritual support and connections to others in similar circumstances. Our topic for March 22 will be Staying Engaged; Keeping Them Engaged. When we are engaged, we are aware, attentive and mindful of what is happening at that moment. Recall how Jesus would tell His disciples to stop worrying and be present to what was going on around them. “Look at the birds...” and “Look how the wild flowers grow...” (Matthew 6:26 – 28). We will meet in Room 209 on the 2nd Floor of the Rectory. Register at https://tinyurl.com/Caregiver0322 to join our ministry.
