APRIL 3, 2016 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER - DIVINE MERCY

DEAR PARISHIONERS and VISITORS:

The second Sunday of Easter was given this special titleof Divine Mercy Sunday by Pope St. John Paul II in the year2000. Pope St John Paul II referred to the words of Jesus toSt. Faustina: “humanity will never find peace until it turnswith trust to Divine Mercy. Divine Mercy is the Easter giftthat the church receives from the risen Christ and offers tohumanity.”

Offering this Divine Mercy to humanity shows itself inpractical ways through the corporal works of mercy and thespiritual works of mercy.

Corporal works of mercy: feed the hungry, give drink tothe thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, comfortthe sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead.

Spiritual works of mercy: admonish the sinner, instructthe ignorant, counsel the doubtful, comfort the sorrowful, bear wrongs patiently, forgive injuries, and pray for theliving and the dead.

It is good for us to pray for each other, to encourage eachother in these ways of living out and sharing God’s gift to usof Divine Mercy, not only on this Sunday but every day ofthe year. Fr. Galvon

Archdiocesan Prayer

for the Jubilee Year of Mercy

All merciful Father, through the reconciling love

of your Son and healing power of the

Holy Spirit, fill us with the richness

of your mercy.

Grant that each family, the domestic church of

the home, be a privileged place of comfort

and healing where your mercy is handed down

from generation to generation.

May husbands and wives convey forgiveness

and love, as sacramental witnesses to the

extravagant mercy of the Cross.

May parents embrace their role as primary

teachers in the school of mercy,

and may brothers and sisters bear each other’s

burdens and weaknesses with gentle compassion.

May each parish, the family of families, be a

place where works of mercy are lived,

compassion is freely given, and welcoming arms

await all seeking forgiveness on their journey

to reconciliation.

Through the intercession of Mary, Mother of

Mercy incarnate, grant that we may be

missionary disciples, who bear to the whole

human family the transforming light of your

Gospel of Mercy. Amen.

Reflection for the Second Sunday of Easter

I was the “jock” in my family growing up. I remember

being very proud of the scrapes, scratches, and

particularly colorful bruises I gained from tumbles and

falls while playing sports.

Sometimes my teammates and I would compare

wounds to see whose was the ugliest…and hence, the

coolest!

For children, scars and wounds can be something to

show off, while adults tend to hide their stretch marks,

surgical scars, and bruised skin—often, I think, to

appear strong and less vulnerable. W e wouldn’t want to

appear weak or broken, would we?

However, in today’s Gospel reading, one of the first

things Jesus does upon appearing to the disciples after

his resurrection is show them the wounds in his hands

and his side. This, of course, was a way to prove he

was really Jesus—the one they saw crucified just three

days earlier.

But it’s significant that even in his glorified, risen body,

Jesus still had his wounds. They didn’t magically

disappear. He didn’t try to hide them. They were part of

him, even in his new, resurrected life.

Only a week after the joy of Easter, it may seem strange

to speak about wounds and scars. Yet we know well in

our own lives that while we trust in the joy of the

resurrection, we still live with broken hearts, broken

relationships, and wounded souls. Just because Easter

has occurred doesn’t mean our wounds have been

erased.

But today’s Gospel reminds us that we have a Savior

who knows what it’s like to be hurt, afraid, and broken.

He knows our wounds because he still has his. Because

of this, he accompanies us…all the way through the

cross to new, resurrected life.

Stewardship Profile of the Week

has been coming to the cathedral for

12 years.

He is head altar server, assists

priests and the Archbishop at

special Masses at the Cathedral and

throughout the Archdiocese.

Motto: “I offer my whole life to the

Lord in service to Him and the

Blessed Mother.”

Thank you, David, for your

solemnity, reverence and joy, and

for your devotion to the celebration

of the Holy Mass, and to our priests.

Stewardship Reflection

In today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles we hear it

proclaimed that many “signs and wonders” were performed in

public by Christ’s followers, a demonstration that produced two

results. First, the people of Jerusalem outside the Christian

community were awed by what the disciples were performing.

And in the midst of all this amazement, many were being

converted. Good stewards know of the evangelizing power

emanating from their daily acts of love, compassion, mercy and

generosity. They believe that if they stay focused on Christ

each day, every act has the power to transform a broken world.

W hat “signs and wonders” will we perform today? www.catholicstewardship.com
