Message from the Rector Dear People of God, Our Advent journey continues, but we can become so carried away with tasks to be accomplished this Advent Season that we may miss the ride! As many of you know, I always enjoy terrific one-liners. I keep the following posted on the mirror in my bedroom: “No one can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” Advent is about waiting, preparation and joyful anticipation. The Advent Season is about beginnings, endings and seeking God in unexpected ways on His terms. Advent is darkness giving way to light and birth– Christmas morn! Do we see the light of God already shining within us to be shared year round with others—especially the poor and homeless? Paula D’Arcy has written several outstanding books which I highly recommend. Her book entitled Seeking with A ll My Heart poignantly captures the image of light in the following way: In her book Word Painting, Rebecca McClanahan writes: “In 1998 scientists recorded the first sighting of what they termed ‘deep light,’ a mysterious light that emanated from the ocean floor. The discovery of this light, which was too faint to be perceived by the human eye and could be accessed only through the use of a special camera, seemed to suggest that undersea objects produced their own radiance independent of the sun. A beautiful description. It was a scientific acknowledgment that the very light that sustains life lies within. But it is not only true for undersea objects that lie on the ocean floor. We are sustained in the same manner. It is a choice for us whether or not we’ll live out of that knowing, living at the edge of our lives, aware that a light is there, producing radiance from within. We decide whether or not the faint light within is brought to its fullest brilliance. The light is simply there, waiting. It is an unbearable gift, having life. So much rests with our own choices.” How do we make the light of God within us visible for other to see? Judith Ackerman shares this touching story. It was November 29, 1963, the day after Thanksgiving, in Youngstown, Ohio, where I was managing the Santa Photo Shop at our biggest department store. Soon after opening, we had a long line of harried parents—their faces touched with sadness over President Kennedy’s assassination a week earlier—and their young children, who couldn’t wait for their turn to see Santa. The line stretched from Santa’s Throne through the toy department and to the elevator doors. The parents were impatient to get on with their shopping. Santa was doing his best, without shortchanging any child. At one point, the elevator doors opened, and a young boy in a wheelchair exited, pushed by an elderly gentleman, his grandfather, I assumed. The man looked at the long line and said, “Should we come back another day, Johnny?” The boy’s disappointment was obvious but before he could respond, a young girl at the end of the line spoke up: “You can get in front of me.” This happened again and again, as one child after another gave up a place in line. I heard no complaints from the parents as their children chose to wait a bit longer for their turn. I sincerely hope those children got an extra gift from Santa that year. I’m certain they each earned a smile from God. Keep any eye out while Christmas shopping in the malls. You just might run smack up against the spirit of the season! The days continue to grow darker the next two weeks. Yet, may our lives always remain light and hope for others. For the darkness gives way to light and hope—Christmas morn! On the Advent journey with you, Fr. Greg P.S. Celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception reminds us of Our Lady’s great sacrifice and gift she gave to the world. During this holiday season please consider honoring Mary by supporting the mission and ministries at Holy Name Cathedral.

Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them, O Lord

Pope Francis is inviting Catholics throughout the world to pray the rosary every day to ask St. Michael the Archangel to protect the Church from the devil, who is always trying to separate us from God and from each other. The prayer to St. Michael was composed by Pope Leo XIII.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

Liturgy OPLATKI Christmas Wafers are a wonderful Christmas Eve tradition celebrated in Poland and

other Slav countries. The entire family will gather around the table with the Oplatek. Generally the eldest member of the family will begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and passing it to another family member with a blessing. This blessing can simply consist of what you desire for your loved one in the upcoming year – whether it be good health, success, or happiness. The purpose of this act is primarily to express one’s unconditional love and forgiveness for each mem-ber of his or her family.

The significance of the Oplatki Christmas wafer is in that it shadows the Eucharistic meal that Catholics participate in at each Mass. Just as we share in the Eucharist as one family in Christ and receive Christ’s love through the Eucharist, the Oplatki allows for one’s immediate family to come together and share the love they have for one another.

The Oplatki tradition is one that is easy, fun, and deeply meaningful to introduce to the family anytime during the long Christmas season. All it requires is a simple wafer paired with love and affection, and the willingness to share it. This is a heartwarming tradition that will complete your family’s time together during the Christmas season.

Oplatki are available to purchase in the rectory .

RCIA UPDATE As we have just welcomed four

adults in the Catholic Faith, there are eight adults and one child discerning whether to move

forward in their faith journey. They will be invited to participate in the Rite of Acceptance, next Sunday, December 15, at the

communion into the Church.

Finally, we are meeting with three new inquirers who may choose to begin the process of discernment to become Catholics.

If you know someone who expresses interest in the Catholic faith, encourage him or her to contact Dr. Ken Ortega. Within a personal conversation, we can determine the appropriate means of accompaniment for each adult.

MARIA GORETTI NETWORK RECOVERY THROUGH FORGIVENESS CFN meets on the second Sunday of the month on

December 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Center Club Room. Our agenda will focus on assignments for Simbang Gabi on December 16 and the Feast of Santo Nino on January 11, 2020. Simbang Gabi. Monday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. Main Presider: Very Rev. Greg Sakowicz. Includes the Cathedral Filipino Singers (CFS). Gathering time at church is 6:30 p.m. Simbang Gabi is a cherished Filipino Christmas tradition. It is a novena of dawn Masses in the Philippines since the 16th century decree from Pope Sixtus V in preparation for the birth of Jesus Christ and the propagation of the Holy Catholic Faith.

Simbang Gabi, meaning ‘Mass in the Dark,’ takes place at dawn traditionally at 4 AM, to enable farm workers to attend before their fieldwork. The novena starts on December 16th ending with the midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Christmas lantern called “Parol,” a five-pointed star, is one of the most iconic symbols of Filipino Christmas spirit. It represents the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Wise Men to the manger of Baby Jesus. Parols are hung outside the homes to light the way for churchgoers.

Around the world, Simbang Gabi is usually held in the evenings to accommodate family and work schedules. At Holy Name, we invite everyone to gather at the church by 6:30 p.m. 3-hour validated parking between 6:30-9:30 pm, is available at 1 W. Superior. Please validate your ticket at the Rectory office immediately upon parking.

Feast of Santo Nino. Saturday, January 11 at 11AM. Main Presider: Rev. Louis J. Cameli. Includes the Cathedral Filipino Singers (CFS). Gathering time at the church is 10:30 a.m.

CFN celebrates the annual Feast of Santo Nino with the venerated statue of the Child Jesus of Prague. Devotion to the Child Jesus is ubiquitous and observed with reverence around the world. On January 11, the Santo Nino de Cebu, a newly acquired image from the Philippines, will join the CFN

celebration. The original statue was a gift from Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 to the Queen Humamay, wife of Rajah (King) Humabon. At the Basilica Minore the Santo Nino de Cebu is the oldest surviving Catholic relic in the Philippines along with the Magellan cross. CFN Feast of Sto Nino includes Illinois and Indiana devotees, who bring their Santo Nino statues for blessings during the Mass. All are welcome to attend CFN events. For more details, [email protected] or 312-933-4762.
