More than 400 students, staff and faculty memberscelebrated International Women’s Day on 9th ofMarch, 2016 in IIT Bombay. The program was acombination of informative session by distinguishedspeakers and cultural program by the students. Aspart of the informative sessions, a lecture by Ms.Snehal Velkar, Akshara Center on "Challenges inmaking public transport safe for women" wasorganised. The other session was by IIT BombayAlumnus and founder of the company ‘Flyrobe’ Ms.Shreya Mishra, who spoke about her journey as awoman entrepreneur in today’s startup ecosystem -stressing that being a woman was always an assetin her journey.

were given an opportunity topropose innovative project ideas. The selection of the proposalsfrom idea to demonstration stagewas done in two stages. Out of181 project proposals received,44 were selected for stage 2.These 44 teams, each having 3-4students mentored by a teacher, implemented their idea andsubmitted video demonstrationand code. 11 projects areshortlisted which will beshowcased in the e-YantraExhibition to be held during thesymposium. These projects wereevaluated by a panel of judgescomprising IIT Bombay facultyand awarded certificates andprizes.

Prof. Shobha Bagai, AssociateProfessor of Cluster InnovationCentre, University of Delhi said,

“The eLSI has inculcated instudents a sense of creativity. The lab at CIC is completelymanaged by students. Thisencourages a team spirit amongstthe students. The activities are sodesigned in the robotics lab thatthe students are more sociallyaware of the usage of technology.”

Sharing the same sentiment, Dr.D.V. Kodavade, Professor andHead, Computer Science &Engineering Department ofD.K.T.E. Society’s Textile &Engineering Institute, Ichalkaranji,(Maharashtra) said, “The e-yantralaboratories are benefitingstudents from all departments of14 engineering collegesassociated with this nodal centre. This year, students havedeveloped projects like cellphone-based fire fighting robot,

staircase climbing spider, automatic grass cutter for lawn,accelerometer-based robotic armetc”.

Conclusion : Both the eventswere a grand success. It isimportant to note here that the e-Yantra project is sponsored by theMinistry of Human ResourceDevelopment (MHRD), under theNational Mission for Educationthrough ICT (NMEICT) to providehands-on learning infrastructure tostudents who have limited accessto labs and mentors. e-Yantraprovides training and hands-onexperience to teachers to run therobotic labs, advice and supportfor setting up the labs, provides aplatform for colleges to share bestpractices and student projectsthrough the e-Yantra Symposiumand provides learning resourcesto these colleges.

Prof. Devang V. Khakhar, Director, IIT Bombay wasthe chief guest for the evening. In his message, heemphasized that though number of women students, faculty and staff in IIT Bombay have increased overthe years, there is still room for improvement.Following this, he unveiled Women’s Cell Logodesigned by IDC student Varun Mewada, which wasselected by a pan-campus competition. Research in FocusNew, affordable, portable kits for diabetic patients

There is an increasing demand for accurate, efficient and cost-effective treatment methodsand devices in critical care units. The main goalbehind the research in Nanobios Lab at IITBombay relates to the development of biosensorassays and their integration into affordable Point-of-care diagnostic devices. Prof. RohitSrivastava from the Department of Biosciencesand Bioengineering has developed two innovativeportable diagnostic systems to measure bloodsugar and other components - uChek andSuChek.

uChek (http://uchek.in) - a low cost smartphonebased urine dipstick reader which was designed, tested and deployed. uChek can interpret uptoten analytes in urine including glucose, bilirubin ,ketones, proteins, urobilinogen, pH, SG, occultblood, leukocytes and nitrites. The accuracy ofuChek was found to be comparable tocommercially available semi-automatedurinalysis instruments in laboratories with 100%of readings within +/- 1 color block. Nanobios labin collaboration with Biosense Technologies PvtLtd have commercialized this product.

Nanobios lab in collaboration with BiosenseTechnologies Pvt Ltd have also manufacturedand commercialized SuChek. SuChek is anindigenous, accurate, low-cost glucometersupported by the Indian Council of MedicalResearch. SuChek reagent strips are asaccurate as conventional glucometers, at afraction of the price. Along with the glucometer, the companion Suchek mobile application helpssave, trend and analyze blood glucose levels atan individual level or track response to treatmentat a community level. The reader and strips arecurrently under clinical trials at various hospitalsin India.

Prof. Srivastava was awarded the Vasvik Award2013 for scientific and industrial research, andthe Product and Process Development andCommercialization Award given by theDepartment of Biotechnology, Government ofIndia for his work on both the products.
