After a lifetime of abuse, three brave yo-ung people broke their silence andused Facebook to expose the abuse

they’ve been suffering.Not only did local siblings Teri-Ann Ro-

binson (18), Kailee Robinson (16) and JasonRoberts (22) empower themselves by crea-ting a Facebook page, they provided a plat-form for others in the same situation to dothe same.In essence, their Facebook page, started

eightmonths ago, is a forumcreated by teen-agers for teenagers to speak out against abu-se and domestic violence in their homes.The siblings decided to go public about

their ownabuse after realising thedesperateplight shared by many of their peers at

school.“After we started talking about our own

circumstances, a floodgate of other, similarstories reached our ears,” says Kailee.

Nowhere to turn“So many other kids in our school told me

that they don’t know whom to turn to orspeak to about abusive situations at homeor elsewhere, which gave us the idea,” addsTeri-Ann.A post on their page best describes their

objective.“Our intention was to speak out and tell

all as all the years we were shut down andwe needed to tell our side (of the story)… westill live the horrors. Furthermore, our situ-ation is meant to assist anyone and help isgiven privately or people are referred if nee-ded…The idea is also to empower ourselves

and others, to heal our trampled lives as bestas we can. Abuse is a crime – all forms ofabuse are crime. It is evil behaviour by cri-minals targeting soft targets. There is no ex-cuse for abuse! Stand up for your rights. Weare not victims we are survivors.”“Since we can remember it has always

been the same. He has abused us and ourmom verbally, emotionally, physically andeven financially,” says Kailee.“I cannot remember the amount of times

I have wiped the spit off my mother’s face,or the amount of times we had to listen tohis threats, often financial, which preventedmy mother from leaving him for the longesttime,” adds Terri-Ann.

ManipulationOlder brother Jason often took the brunt

of the abuse, with several physical attacks.

Due to their abuser’s financial reckles-sness the family was forced tomove 17 timesin 19 years and are again looking for accom-modation.In a recent documentary Kailee produced

for the website, she quotes what she calls“The Famous Lines” of the abuser.“Keep on doing that, and just watch and

see what I do!”, “I do what I want, when Iwant and no one can stop me!”, “Get out ofmyway, I’m gonna hurt you!”, are just a fewof the threats they’ve endured over the ye-ars.“Apart from never having stability, the

abuse has left us afraid and without confi-dence for most of our lives. Nobody can ima-gine the hurt and pain we’ve suffered. Thisis the first time that we have spoken out andit feels good.”

Nothing stops him from harming usand yet we have been gagged from doingwhat empowers us,” says Kailee.Inmanyways the siblings view their Face-

An illicit wood yard in Joubert Streetremains a thorn in the flesh for near-by residents.

Only known as Woodyard, the businessreceived an order from city law enforce-ment to remove all the wood and cease acti-vities on the premises three weeks ago.Gawie Botha, regional law enforcement

inspector said: “Following complaints fromneighbours we visited the site.“It soon became clear that the business

did not have the correct legal zoning in pla-ce to tradeandwasguilty of a landuse trans-gression. The property is zoned for residen-tial use only.“We ordered the owner to stop all busi-

ness activities and remove the wood fromthe premises within seven days.“If not we would be forced to confiscate

the wood and restore the premises to an ac-ceptable standard to ensure the quality oflife of neighbouring residents.”Botha said the casewill also appear in the

municipal court on 17 April.Complaints from the public included noi-

se emanating from trucks delivering thewood, wood being stacked up alongneighbouringwalls and an abundance of ro-dents.One of the complainants, who wishes to

remain anonymous, last week alleged thathe observed continued activity on the pre-mises, even after the city gave the order.“I have lived here for 35 years and this is

a discrace. Not only is the wood pile visiblethree meters above my wall, but it poses ahealth risk due to the increase in mice,” hesaid.

This neighbour allegedly witnessed cus-tomers at the shop a week ago – a fortnightafter the compliance order was served – aswell as a truck delivering wood.“It seems to me that this business is igno-

ring all efforts from the city’s law enforce-ment,” he said.TygerBurger ascertained that the busi-

ness has in the meantime applied for thecorrect zoning status.Ward councillor Gerhard Fourie confir-

med that the applicationwould be tabled be-fore council by May or June.

He added however, that until such time,the business is not allowed to operate.“For too long people have been allowed to

trade illegally using the fact that they havemade application for business zoning, as anexcuse,” he said.TygerBurger could not obtain comment

from the business owners, despite an at-tempt to do so.Ona late afternoonand earlymoring visit

to the Woodyard, the office of the premiseswas closed, but piles of wood were plainlyvisible on the premises.

The Woodyard in Joubert Street has been ordered to cease doing business.

The innocent pleading eyes of previ-ously abused or neglected animalslook up at you, willing to give their

hearts asyou step into the Uitsig Animal Rescue

Centre.It is unthinkable that the some 500 res-

cued animals on these premises might bewithout a home in three months time.

Theorganisation lastweek receivedno-tice to vacate the smallholding nearFisantekraal tomake space for theGreen-ville Garden City housing development.

It is a very real probability that theseanimals could lose their lives if the organ-isation loses its facilities. However, forthe fervent, tough-as-nails animal loversand passionate founders and members ofthis exceptional organisation, it’s not anoption.

Massive mandate“Failure is not an option. It is a bigwor-

ry for us, but for the sake of the animalswe cannot afford to not succeed,” saidfoundingmemberDenaySaunders, aboutthe organisation’s quest to now find newland to home the animals.

Her love and genuine concern for thewelfare of animals is visible in the unself-ish work she, her 15 staff members andother volunteers have put into the organi-sation since its inception in 2009.

A former veterinarian assistant, it washer intention to provide abandoned andsurrendered animals with a short-termalternative to euthanasia.

Theirmandate is gigantic: to rescue ne-glected, abandoned and abused animalsin the northern suburbs of Cape Townand to nurse them back to health, providethem with a safe and loveable haven, torehabilitate themand to find themperma-nent homes.

In fact, the centre is the only pro-life,pro-quality-of-life animal rescue havenwith premises in the northern suburbs.Thismeans they also house animals fromvarious other shelters and animal wel-fare organisations such as the Lucky Lu-cy Foundation, Adopt-a-Pet and the Ani-mal Rescue Team.

“We believe that all animals have a sec-ond chance no matter how neglected orabused they were when we found them.We do not believe in euthanising animalsandwill only do so in exceptional circum-stances where an animal is either suffer-ing or could not be rehabilitated. We be-lieve in providing all our animals withquality of life, sufficient food, shelter andattention, until such timewe can re-homethemwith a suitable family,” saysDenay.

An unrealistic feat?“No. There is much hope. We have had

great success with our adoptions, whileat the same time we undertake sterilisa-tion and animal care education pro-grammes in underprivileged areas andtownships, to address the problem at thecore. Additionally, all the animalswe res-cue stay on at the centre for an unlimitedperiod of time,” she says.

No hard feelingsAccording to Denay, they have no gripe

with the land owners, as they were awarefrom the start that the land was ear-marked for development and their staywould only be temporary.

“Our landlordswere very good and gen-erous to us over the years and we realisethe importance of housing. It’s just thatit came down on us rather suddenly andwe now have to move very fast to raisethe funds we need to re-establish the cen-tre,” she said.

The centre envisions purchasing theirown land, registering it in a trust and re-building their shelters on it for the exclu-sive use of the rescue centre.

“We have been working, for some timenow, on a future vision for a new largerworld class animal rescue centre fromwhich we can accomplish much morethan even what we do now. We just hadno idea that we would have to do it sosoon!”

“We are solely dependent on public do-nors andourown fundraising, but believethat with the help of the community wecan reach or target in time,” she said, andadds: “Please everyone, we have only 90days to raise what we need. The alterna-tive is unthinkable and will crush somany of us.”

Planning phaseCEO of Garden Cities John Matthews

confirmed that they were in the planningphases of phase 2 of the project, but theyhad given the farmmanager of the UitsigFarm appropriate legal notice that theywould only require the land by the end ofnext year.

He said that the lease between the farmmanager and the centre stipulated threemonths but this notice period was not tohis knowledge invoked as yet.

“I am however happy to engage withthe centre in order to find a solution,” hesaid.

The organisation would need about R5million, and have raised R50 000 to date.

Dis die vraagwat die plaaslike sanger, Lu-kas de Beer, en die vervaardiger, HelmutMeijer, gevra het toe hulle aan Lukas se de-buut- album begin werk het.Alhoewel hy al baie liedjies vir ander kun-

stenaars geskryf het, het hy eers onlangs syeie album, Storm op Jupiter, bekend gestel.“Dis ietswat al komvanmykinderdae af,”

sê Lukas van symusiek. Hy was elf of twaalftoe hy al in sy eerste orkes gespeel het.Lukas sê dat daar ’n klomp dinge in sy le-

we is wat saamgekom het, sodat hy die stapkon neem om sy eie musiek op te neem. Hyhet al baie van die materiaal op die albumklaar geskryf en hy’t homself afgevra:“Waarvoor wag ek?”.“Dis nie asof ’n ou jonger word nie en dis

nie asof die tyd meer raak nie,” spot hy.Toe Lukas en Helmut besluit het om die

album op te neem, was hul kriteria dat hullemusiek wou maak wat vir hulle mooi is, on-geag of dit op die radio gespeel sou word. Al-bei hou van die 80’s, asook rock-musiek, enLukas sê dat hulle ’n bietjie van ’n soft rock-benadering gehad het.

MusikaliteitToe Lukas en Helmut ontmoet het om oor

die album te gesels, wasHelmut toevallig dievorige aand by ’n Mike and the Mechanics-vertoning en die twee het besluit om te sienof hulle nie iets van die musikaliteit vandaardie era kan vasvang nie.Lukas was bietjie bekommerd dat die al-

bum te divers is, maar hy sê dieselfde skry-wer, musikante en vervaardiger maak datdie tien liedjies opdie oueinde togbymekaarpas.Hy sê die inspirasie vir sy liedjies komvan

The dog, follo-wed by the handler on a long line,must follow the track and find andindicate all three articles. There areup to 11 corners on the track.The next section involves the dog

finding a hidden article within a de-lineated area of rough ground. Thedogmust check every quarter of thearea, find the article and indicate to

the handler where it is hidden.The third section consists of the

dog finding, within four minutes,four small articles about the size ofa matchbox which have been hid-den in another area of rough gras-sland.There is also a send-away and re-

direction section in which the dogmust run out 50 m to a visible land-mark. The dogmust stopwhen com-manded and then, when redirectedby the handler, must run either tothe right or to the left for another

20 m and stop when commanded.The dog must also complete a 10

minute downstay with the handlercompletely out of sight, then a secti-on of heelwork inwhich itmust stayclose to thehandler even if thehand-ler changes pace or walks close toother people, dogs or cars. An addition to the 2014 World TriathlonSeries calendar was in November an-nounced by the International Triath-

lon Union (ITU).For the first time ever, a World Triathlon

Series event will take place on the Africancontinent with a race to be held at the V&AWaterfront in Cape Town from 26 to 27 April.

The Cape Town race will serve as the se-cond stop on an eight-city tour starting inAuckland from 5 to 6April.

Cape Town, alongwith Chicago, is one oftwo cities to debut onthe WTS calendar in2014.

The world’s top tri-athletes have confirmedtheir participation inthe Cape Town leg of theseries. With eight of thetop ten elite men on thestart list, spectators canexpect a tight, actionpacked race. Local heroRichard Murray (ran-ked 5th) will take on Ma-rioMola (ESP),whonar-rowly beat him by 18 se-conds in the World Cupseason opener in Mooloolaba last month, aswell as fellow Spaniard Javier Gomez whois number one on the WTS rankings. With15 and seven World Series wins under theirrespective belts, Brownlee brothers Alistairand Jonathan are the most successful eliteathletes in the history of the series and willbe looking to retain their position.

With the top three ladies on the WTS ran-kings, Jodie Stimpson (GBR), Non Stanford(GBR) and Anne Haug (GER) confirmed, theladies competition will rival the elite men’s

for action. Olympic silver medallist LisaNorden (SWE) will also be making her ITUWorld Series comeback in Cape Town afterthe 2012 Olympics. Along with Helen Jenk-ins (GBR), she’ll be looking to regain her for-mer ITU World Triathlon Series glory.

die klub wat aan die byeenkoms deelge-neem het en het twee goue en twee brons-medaljes verower.Sanderina Kruger (65) het uitstekend ge-

swem en drie wêreldrekords laat spat. Indie 50 m-vryslaghet sy diewêreldrekord ge-breek in ’n tyd van 31:40 sek. In die100 m-vryslag het sy ’n spogtyd van 1:09.63behaal en toe in die 200 m-vryslagmet ’n tydvan 2:39:00 gewen. Hierdie rekords moetnog amptelik deur FINA erken word. In to-taal het Sanderina nege goue medaljes ge-wen en is beloon met die byeenkoms se vic-trix ludorum-trofee.Die 15de FINA-wêreld-meesters-swemby-

eenkoms vind van 27 Julie tot 10 AugustusinMontreal, Kanada plaas. Sanderina Kru-ger en Rod Holshausen gaan hieraan deel-neem.
