EDITORIAL. EVERYBODY'S BUSINESSTHE GRAPE STRIKE HAS SHAKEN THE ROOTS OF OUR VALLEY AND OF THESTATE. NOW THE GROWERS ARE TRYING TO APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC,SAYING, "WE ARE NOT THE MONSTERS THAT TlIE UNIONS ARE CALLINGUS. WEJUST WANT TO LIVE IN PEACE."

THERE WILL BE NO PEACE AND TRANQUILITY UNTIL THE DAY THEWORKERS ARE ALLOWED TO SIT OOWN AT THE TABLE WITH THE RANCHER AND MAKE AN AGREEMENT. THERE WILL BE NO "RELIABLELABOR FORCE" UNTIL THERE ARE WRITTEN, SIGNED CONTRACTS FORWORK BETWEEN THE GROWERS AND THE NATIONAL FARM WORKERSA;';SOCIATION. THERE WILL BE NO CERTAINTY THAT THE CROPS WILLBE HARVESTED, PRUNED, IRRIGATED, THINNED, GRAFTED, TIED,STRIPPED, PACKED, OR WHATEVER OPERATION IS ESSENTIAL, UNTILTHE WORKER IS GIVEN THE SAME MEASURE OF RESPECT THAT CITYWORKERS HAVE FROM THEIR BOSSES.

1965 IS COMING TO AN END. BUT WHAT WILL THE GROWERS DO ABOUTTHE GRAPE STRIKE OF 1966? AND THE OTHER STRIKES? IT IS LIKELYTHAT SOME OF THEM WILL REALIZE SOON THAT THE BEST THING THEYCAN 00 IS BARGAIN WITH THE PEOPLE WID PICK THE GRAPES, THE MELONS, AND THE ORANGES OF CALIFORNIA. UNTIL THEY 00, THERE WILLBE STRIKE AFTER STRIKE AND NO PEACE IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY-THE VALLEY THAT BELONGS TO US AS WELL AS TO THEM.

THEY SAY ''WE TREAT OUR MEXICANS RIGHT". THEY SAY ''WE9RE GOINGBROKE". THEY SAY" THESE CHOLOS MAKE GOOD MONEY ALREADY".THESE ARE EXACTLY THE SAME KIND OF ARGUMENTS USED BY THESLAVEOWNERS IN THE SOUTH 100 YEARS AGO.

THESE LOCAL TYRANrS BECOME FURIOUS WHEN WE SHOW THEM THATTHE HUELGA IS A HUGE SOCIAL MOVEMENT INVOLVING THE RESPECT OFA WIDLE RACE OF PEOPLE. WHEN OUTSIDERS--THOUSANDS OF THEM-DECIDE TO HELP THE FARM WORKERS IN THEIR FIGHT FOR A BETTERLIFE, THE RANCHERS SAY THAT IT IS NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS.

THE HUELGA HAS BECOME EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS. THAT IS WHY IT ISWINNING.

JUDGE CHANGESTRIAL LOCATION

FOR 44 PICKETS

"No fair trial for the 44 pickets ispossible in Delano" This was the verdict of Judge Kitchen of the DelanoJustice Court. He saId that the trialwould take place instead in Bakersfield during December.

Copies of the Delano Record reporting on The ,Strike were used as evidence by Cesar Chavez to prove thatthe pickets of the Farm WorkersAssociation had been arrested in aplace where justice could not prevail. The Judge ruled that a "Change ofVenue" would be allowed, meaningthat the trial would be held outside theDelano area.

The reporting in the local paper wasshown to be so biased, untrue andhateful, that the general public wasmisinformed on the reasons for theStrike and the arrests. The judgeconsidered this evidence in makinghis ruling to hold the trial in a placewhere the workers, students andministers could receive justice.

"There is no justice now in Delano"Chavez said following hIS arrest for"violating air space" over the vineyards of Bruno Dispoto in his airplaneflight with two priests on Nov. 7."There will be no justice until everyfarm worker is earning a just wageunder a strong contract with his employer. That day is not far from becoming a reality. " he added. "Thedark ages of California agricultureare over. This year, 1965, with thestrike in the grapes, we are enteringthe time when farm workers will turnCalifornia's shame into victory......

PART OF THE ORIGINAL LETTERAPPEARS ABOVE

I I

LETTER FROM THE KERN COUNTY JAIL.I TOLD THEM I was not guilty, because I know that there is freedom of speechhere in the United States, and freedom for the worker. For that reason I saythat I am innocent.

IF AT TillS time there is no freedom for the wor~er, then perhaps I shall befound guilty--but I do not believe that that is true. According to my understanding the police say that we broke the law by shouting "Huelga"--by defending .our rights as workers, by asking a mere ten cents an hour raise--this they callbreaking the lawo

IS IT NOT true that the growers break the law--and much worse than we do?They spray us with insecticide with their spray rigs on public roadways, andspray dust upon us with their tractors; they try to frighten us off with their carsand pickups, even to the point of running US down. They accuse us of beingCommunists merely because we ask for a raise of ten cents an hour and a eontract so that we may be sure they will not lower our wages, as they did lastyear. This happened at the ranch of John Pagliarulo, who was paying $10 20 anhour. Then a foreman named Castillo and his wife Margarita told the growerthat he should let go all of the women who were earning $1. 20 an hour, and thatthey would bring him workers who would work for $1.10 an hour. Is this just?Is this freedom? I do not call this freedom.

~

--RIVERA--

AND THERE IS another such case involving some contractors named Guevera.I went to work for them tying vines, about forty miles from Delano, at fifteencents a row for nailing up wires on both sides of the row, and 83~ a row fortying the vines. After paying those miserable wages--because the fastest work..er could tie only six or seven rows a day, and there were others who could do

I

only four or five--they still would rob the workers cynically if they were care-less about how much work they had done. This is what they call decent wa~es,but I say that this is not justo

WE, THE POOR people, have against us not only the growers, but also thepolice. Because I know that the moment one does anything at all to help withthe strike, the police begin taking pictures of him, and then go to the growersand ask them if they wish to sign a complaint against himo On the other hand, the growers have pushed and shoved us in front of the police, they have threatened us with guns and fired them over our heads, and the police do not have theright to arrest them. Why? Because they have money, because the workersmake them rich with the work they do for them? And because the workers arepoor, because they are the slaves of the growers? Because discriminationexists? This I do not call freedom.

earn the low wages that the boss condescends to pay us? The growers w<;>uldlike to have our whole families working for only their food. And still theywould complain that they were losing money•. And they set the prices on thefood the workers earn at whatever level they wish to. Is it not the growerswho work the least and suffer the least?

THE GROWER DOES not suffer from the sun and the rain and the cold, 'and hegoes to his home to eat. And we who work more, suffer moreo We do not evenhave the right to earn a mere $1.40 an hour. If there are some people who suffer more than other people, then we are those people--the farm workers, oras they say here, those who work in the field. And if anyone is offended, itis ~ecause I say the truth.

PLEASE BELIEVE ME when I say that I regret it a great deal if for that reasonthey wish to arrest me, or because they believe I am breaking the law or because I am saying the truth. But I do not believe that saying the truth is breaking the law. But here the rich man is the only man who never breaks the law.As for us, the poor- -assuredly we break it.

THAT IS ALL that I have to say to you.

- - - Manuel RiveraIT IS MY understanding that all of us are supposed to have the same rights-- Kern County Jailincluding the workers, who suffer from the heat of the sun and the chill of therain, and who at times even go hungry. And why? To harvest the crop~ and (Manuel Rivera, along with 43 others, was arrested for shouting "Huelga. II)

Dear Sirs,

I heard on the radio that the grapestrike would soon spread to othercrops in all of Californiao I thinkthis would be good, because wagesaround Lindsay in oranges and olivesare not enough.

Viva La HlelgaJ. M.Lindsay

El Malcriado Says~ Workers allover the state are demal1ding betterwages and a written contract. Ifthey do not get these soon, farmworkers will organize and go onstrike. The F. W. Ao has warnedgrowers, especially orange andolive growers, to raise wages. But strikes involve hardship andSlcrifice for all. If we can obtainjustice without having to strike, itwill be better. If the employerswill sit down with workers and theF. W. A. to discuss what a fair wagewould be, then a just settlement can

•be achieved without a strike.

Dear Editor,Mr. Chavez, I am truly honored bythe letter which you sent to me, andI am very grateful for the confidencewhich you placed in me.I have learned from your newspaper,EL MALCRIAOO, that you havetaken the reins in a struggle that, with the help of God, will have itsjust recompense. Because all of usLatin-Americans have witnessedyour energy and valor for defendingwmt is justly ours, and in gainingfor us a salary worthy of our effortsso that we may sustain our families.we are proud of you. Dear Editor,

I want to express my opinion on theissue of El Malcriado where a groupof strikers display the Mexican flagoI believe that this action constitutesan offense against the people thatlove peace, and a disgrace to Mexico. It should not be displayed in alabor dispute case. The dispute isstrictly in this country.

Juan RojasPoplar, Calif.

El Malcriado Says: We respectyour feelings about the flag, but wehave displayed the flags of Mexicoand of the United States becausethey symbolize the ideals for whichwe are working, for liberty and justice. Citizens of both countrieshave joined the strike. And manycitizens of the U. S. are proud oftheir rich Mexican heritage. We flythe flags with pride. No disgrace isintended. Our strikers say it istheir flag, and they have the right todisplay ito

Dear Editor~

Forget what the Bible tells us forthe time being. Forget what President Johnson, Dr. King, and theothers tell us. Are we reallyequal? •..

It is social equality that you want, and••. it can never become a reality. Two men can be equal in theirwealth or their poverty, but one orthe other is almost always going tobe unacceptable in a social sense.Due to bad manner, bad breath, orbecause he is a boor. Two men canbe equal in their power, but again, one thing or another will m~ke asocial outcast. Besides, there aremany levels to society. These levels are such because of power, wealth, rank, profession or poverty, race and profession againo •••I have n.o doubts that this will everbe printed, nor do I care••.•

Gerald B. RadeleffDelano

EI Malcriado Says: We are sorrythat-we do not have space to print allyour ideas, Mr. Radeleff, but your1000 word letter was too much forus. In any case, the idea of superior and inferior people was wellexplained by Adolph Hitler and hisfriends 30 years ago, and they killedmillions of Jews trying to prove it.

At any rate, we are happy to seethat the well-fed half of the community of Delano is beginning to think, even if their thinking is fuzzy• Wewelcome letters from our "equals"on the other side of the freeway, and will print them in full if theyare short enougho

STRIKE BULLETINSDELANO: The Farm Workers Association released the following estimatesof the effects of the ten-week old Delano grape strike after last weeki s raintemporarily ended picking:

At least 5,562 workers have walked out of Delano area grape fields sinceSt-)ptarber 8. The figure is based on authorization cards naming the FoWoAoa'3 bargaining agent, signed by workers when they went on strike; by lists ofwor\:ers, especially non-citizens, who do not join the union but quit workand leave the area; by AoW.OoCo statistics on the number of Filipinos onstrike; double-checked with daily reports of picket captains on workers whohave actuall}T left the fieldso Uncounted, but doubtless a substantial number, are those scabs who promise to leave work after finishing that day, or field,or week. Also uncounted are those who have simply left the area because ofthe strike, without telling anyoneo

On the other hmd, since the first week of October, growers have succeededin hiring a work force of from 30 to 60 per cent of the normal needo Thishas been done through a heavily financed r-ecruiting campaign, from Texasto Oregon to Old Mexico. Immigration officials have been swamped with theinflux of "wetbacks" which the growers illegally hire for scab laboro "BorderPatrol Officer R. Go Johnson of Fresno reported more wetbackS this yearthan any year since 1954, the previous "peako"

DELANO~ RAr~! An incn in Delano and over 1 inch in Earlimart and Richgrove temporarily ended picketing by strikers in the grape fields last weekoThe rain will probably terminate field packing of all table grapes for therest of the season. The rain is late for the area, and the growers were aided by the long harvest seasono But the harvest remains three weeks behindoThe next few days will determine whether the rest of the crop rots of whether grapes can still be sold to wineries. This underlies .the losses in table grapes whichusually sell at four times the price of, wine grapeso
