Don Bosco Sporting Exchange

17

Letters will be coming out in the Autumn Term with full dates and details of this years

trip so please contact Mr Lewin if you are keen to be involved this year.

Next Easter students and staff from Uppingham Community College will be visiting

Haacht, Belgium for the staging of the 42nd Sporting Exchange trip between the

two colleges.

The exchange programme is believed to be one of the longest running in the world and

over the years has involved an estimated 9,000 students from the two Colleges.

The exchange came about by chance after former Head of PE Tony Wilks took a

football team from the college on a tour back in 1971. During this tour he met up

ZLWK%HUW9DQGH/LQGHQIURP'RQ%RVFRDQGWKHĆUVWRIĆFLDOH[FKDQJHEHJDQD\HDU

later in 1972.

The colleges host the exchange on alternate years and this year Don Bosco brought

114 students across to Uppingham for the competition. These students were a

mixture from Years 7-11, as well as including 6th Formers who competed and a

further 10 members of staff who accompanied the group.

7KHĆYHGD\H[FKDQJHFRQVLVWVRIYDULRXVVSRUWLQJFRPSHWLWLRQVWKURXJKRXWWKH

day followed by either an evening activity such as ice skating or time with the host

presentation of the awards and trophy to the winning college.

Don Bosco ran out winners in 2014 so the College looks forward to travelling to Don

Bosco in 2015 and winning the Trophy back as the exchange program pushes towards

its 50th year!

Sports Leaders

In Year 10 students are given the opportunity

to complete the Level 1 Sports Leadership

Award during their core PE lessons. The course

is assessed over 30 hours with the emphasis

on learning through practical activities. The

course enables students to develop a wide

range of key skills such as; planning activities,

FRPPXQLFDWLRQWHDPZRUNRIĆFLDWLQJDVZHOO

as regularly delivering sports sessions to others.

Students are given the opportunity to develop

their skills during extra-curricular clubs, sports

Ć[WXUHVDQGFRPPXQLW\HYHQWV7KH\DUH

heavily involved in running the college sports

day. Students who complete the course will then

be given the opportunity to apply for the Level

2 Award in Community Sports Leadership at a

post-16 centre. Further details are available on

the Sports Leaders UK website:

http://sportsleaders.org/

b

The College is also working with National

Governing Bodies to promote additional

Sports Leadership programmes and develop

the volunteering legacy of last year’s Olympic

Games. Last year we ran a selection of

courses including Football Leaders, Tennis

Leaders, Cricket Leaders and Cycling Leaders

opportunity to develop key skills in terms

of sports organisation, administration and

RIĆFLDWLQJZKLFKDOORZWKHPWRIXOĆOYDOXDEOH

roles within their teams and clubs, both within

the College and also locally. Students do not

have to be on the Sports Leaders course to

access these additional opportunities; they are

open to all students in Years 9-11.

Sports Leaders also assist with the Rutland

Primary Schools Sports programme and play a

vital role in delivering some of the key festivals

this year is the Junior Football Leaders Course.

This will be running on Saturday 4th October

between 10am-4pm at the College. The Course

is available to Year 9, 10 and 11 students. See

Mr Lewin for full details. Pictures are last years

where learners develop knowledge and

understanding by applying their learning

and skills in a work-related context. They are

becoming increasingly popular and effective

as they engage and encourage learners to take

responsibility for their own learning and to

develop skills that are essential for the modern

day workplace. These skills include: being

effective in a team, working from a prescribed

brief, meeting deadlines, presenting information

effectively and completing administrative tasks

and processes. BTECs motivate learners, and

provides a platform for progression into further

study and responsibility within the workplace.

Units of work include: The Mind and Sports

Performance, Practical Sports Performance,

Fitness for Sports and Exercise and Anatomy

and Physiology. These units are delivered

through lessons consisting of both theoretical

and practical material. Students are assessed

through written coursework/assignments and

online exams. Of the four units students cover,

two will be assessed through assignment/

coursework and the other two will be assessed

by method of on-screen tests. In total, there will

be six assignments and two exams over the two

year course.

performances were adapted from the Spotlight showcase earlier in March

and other performances were developed through practice, hardwork and

time dedication.

The evening was a huge success displaying a total of 16 acts, a total of 38

performers from all school years, boys and girls. There were a range of

different dance styles on show, including Street, Pop and Ballet.

We are looking forwards to next year’s Evening of Dance and we welcome

any student who wants to take part in the show, or participate in any of the

workshops, enrichments and other dance opportunities.

Keep listening out for information or news regarding dance in the notices and

look to get involved.

Please contact Miss Hodgson if you would like to be involved in next years

event: [email protected]
