    ABSTRACT

A User Satisfaction survey was conducted at the new UCF Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) from March 12 through March 31, 2002. This satisfaction survey was developed by the UCF office of Operational Excellence and Assessment Support (OEAS) to assess whether the needs of the RWC patrons were being met, and to determine any improvements that might be made to the RWC. The support provided by OEAS included writing, designing and testing the survey, designing the sampling methodology, and preparing documentation of survey results. The staff of the RWC was responsible for the distribution and collection of the surveys.

Over 600 patrons of the new Recreation and Wellness Center participated in the

satisfaction survey. Overall, users are satisfied with the RWC, with 93% of respondents reporting that the new center is either “Excellent” or “Very Good.” The most requested new equipment for the new RWC is additional free weights (39%), and the most requested additions to the exercise class schedule are kickboxing (19%) and yoga (15%). Acknowledgements Special thanks go to Suzie Halpin, Director, Student Union and RWC, and Liz Ellis for their assistance in the writing and administration of the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center User Survey.

  • UCF RECREATION AND WELLNESS CENTER USER SURVEY

1.0 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND “The mission of the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center [opened in January 2002] is to foster healthy lifestyle choices and wellness through efficient services, comprehensive programs and high-quality facilities. The Recreation and Wellness Center is designed to enrich campus life and advance the University’s educational mission” (http://www.rec.ucf.edu/mission.htm). “The new UCF Recreation and Wellness Center offers cardiovascular training equipment, selectorized weight circuit, free weights, and a Group Aerobics room. Additional student recreation facilities include an outdoor pool, sand volleyball courts, a disc golf course, softball fields, the Lake Claire recreation area (picnic facilities, watercraft, nature trail) and a variety of multipurpose fields. The new center includes 10,000 square feet of fitness and cardio space, an indoor track, four basketball courts, three aerobics/group exercise rooms, and a climbing wall” (http://www.rec.ucf.edu/).

The management of the new UCF Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) contacted OEAS in the Fall of 2001 for assistance in creating a customer satisfaction survey. They required a survey that would assess whether the needs of the RWC users were being met, and to determine any improvements that might be made to the facilities and/or its offerings. 2.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE SURVEY AND ANALYSES CONDUCTED The “Recreation and Wellness Center User Survey” constructed by OEAS has four main sections: (1) participation rates and satisfaction with specific activities and facilities, (2) satisfaction with the staff and policies, (3) satisfaction with the hours of operation and services, and (4) preferences for additional exercise classes, services, and equipment. In addition, the survey asks users for their overall satisfaction with the new RWC and some demographic questions. The data were first analyzed by the demographic questions to look for differences between groups. To do this, all of the participation rate and satisfaction questions were analyzed by frequency of RWC use, classification (e.g., Freshman, Sophomore, . . . Staff), and gender. Differences between groups were analyzed by performing two-tailed t-tests on the mean ratings, with differences at the 95% confidence level deemed significant. Gender was the only variable that produced significantly different results. Data tables for all of the question items (see Appendix) were seperated by gender to illustrate any differences. 3.0 METHODOLOGY FOR ADMINISTRATION OF THE SURVEYS

Over 600 Recreation and Wellness Center User Surveys were administered during a three-week period beginning March 12, 2002. RWC users were asked to complete the survey as they entered the facility. OEAS provided guidelines on the survey administration including recommended respondent selection by day of the week and time of day, and the random selection of respondents. The recommended strategy

    OEAS-SR-02-002 1 08/09/02

    http://www.rec.ucf.edu/mission.htmhttp://www.rec.ucf.edu/

  • was to administer the survey to every 5th person who entered the RWC until the quota in the time block for that day (provided by OEAS) was reached. 4.0 RESULTS

    4.1 User Profile

Most users of the Recreation and Wellness Center are frequent users. Approximately one-third (32%) reported that they worked out at the RWC five or more times a week, and nearly one-half (45%) said that they worked out two to four times a week. The sample was roughly evenly distributed among undergraduate student classifications, with approximately 20% of respondents reportedly being in each of the four classifications (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior). The rest of the sample was predominately graduate students (8%). UCF staff comprised only 2% of the sample.

There were slightly more males (54%) surveyed than females (46%), which is

nearly the inverse of the demographics of the students in the University as a whole (45% male and 55% female). This seems to indicate that a slightly higher percentage of males than females use the facility.

    4.2 Overall Satisfaction

Overall, users are very pleased with the new RWC with 60% of users rating it “Excellent” and 33% of users rating it “Very Good.” The mean overall rating is 4.5 on a 1 to 5 scale with 1 being “Poor” and 5 being “Excellent.”

  • 5.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

    • Most users of the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center use the facility on a regular basis. Over three-fourths (77%) of the respondants use the facility at least twice a week. There is no significant difference in how often males and females use the RWC.

    • Overall, users are satisfied with the Recreation and Wellness Center. Ninety-

three percent (93%) of respondants report that the new center is either “Excellent” or “Very Good” with females being slightly more satisfied than males.

    • Exercise machines, particularly those used for resistance or cardiovascular

excercises, are the most popular features of the RWC. • While users generally agree that the staff and policies are satisfactory, about one

in eight (13%) feel that the wait time for equipment is not acceptable and roughly 10% do not feel that the climbing wall hours are convenient.

    • Nearly half (48%) of users either feel that the current hours of operation are just

fine or have no opinion with respect to increasing operating hours. The most popular choices for extended hours are during the late evening hours, while the least popular choices for extended hours are in the early morning.

    • The most requested additions to the exercise class schedule are kickboxing and

yoga. The most popular times for these activities would be during the evening hours.

    • The most requested new eqipment for the Recreation and Wellness Center is

additional free weights (39%). The only other piece of equipment with a greater than 10% demand are elliptical trainers (13%).
