UKATA Asbestos Awareness for Groundworkers
Asbestos Awareness training for
ground workers is an adapted As-
bestos awareness course which is
designed to suit the needs of em-
ployees whose primary roles in-
volve ground working. This course
focuses on the risks from exposure
to asbestos when working on
brownfield sites; in particular made
ground and contaminated land.
Who needs this qualification?
Groundworkers; In particular, it should be given
to all people employed on projects to redevelop
brownfield sites. Also people working on sites
where industrial buildings have been demol-
ished, where it is foreseeable that their work will
disturb the ground on site and may expose
them to Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs)
that may be present within the land.
Why is this training important?
This course will provide an awareness of in
ground conditions and develop knowledge
amongst employees regarding the hazards and
risks posed by soils and ground on sites that
may contain ACMs. The course further gives an
overview of the legislative measures and guid-
ance available to safeguard employees.
Learning Outcomes
This course will cover the following topics:
Understand the legislation involved in dealing
with asbestos
Find out how damaging asbestos can be to
your health
Decipher the types, uses and likely occurrenc-
es of asbestos
Recognise ACM’s in made ground and soil
including the concept of free fibre contamina-tion
Perform emergency procedures if suspected
contamination is identified preventing the spread of asbestos across the site
