John J. Fung, MD, PhD
John J. Fung, M.D., Ph.D. is the Director of the UChicago Medicine Transplantation Institute. Prior to that, he served as Chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Health System Center for Transplantation, as well as the former Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. With over 30 years of involvement in abdominal and cellular transplantation, he is also an accomplished immunologist. Dr. Fung received his B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University in 1975, followed by a Ph.D. in Immunology in 1980 and M.D. in 1982 from the University of Chicago. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Rochester, and a transplant surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Starzl. Between 1987 and 1988, he served as Director of Histocompatibility Testing at the University of Rochester. In 1989, he joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and held the tenured position as the inaugural Thomas E. Starzl Professor in Surgery. He joined the Cleveland Clinic in 2004 as the Chairman of the Department of General Surgery and Professor of Surgery at the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western University. He also served as the Medical Director of Allogen Laboratory, one of the largest histocompatibility laboratories in the United States and oversaw transplantation services at five Cleveland Clinic facilities globally. In 2016, he was recruited to serve as the Director of the newly created University of Chicago Medicine Transplantation Institute.
Dr. Fung is a member of numerous scientific and surgical societies and served as President of the International Liver Transplantation Society from 1997-1999. He is currently Secretary of the Transplantation Society. He has published over 1,000 articles and book chapters and serves on the editorial board for several medical journals. He is the immediate past Editor-in-Chief for Liver Transplantation, the highest impact factor specialty transplant journal. His principal research interests are in transplantation immunology, immunosuppressive therapies, and liver related immunology. In addition, he has received numerous prestigious lay and professional awards. His research interests are in transplant immunology, liver immunity, immnosuppression, and outcomes analysis.
Dr. Fung is active in community affairs and has been a member of the Board of Directors at the Americans for Medical Progress and the Gift of Hope Organ Procurement Organization. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He and his wife, Beth have four children: Justin, Lauren, Brendan and Shannon.

Karim J Halazun MD, FACS is an associate professor of liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. He completed his surgical residency and Abdominal Organ Transplantation & Hepatobiliary surgery fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center. His research interests include the search for novel predictors of outcome in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, improving the use of living donors, marginal/extended criteria livers in the US and disparities in liver transplantation outcomes in the US. He has received numerous national and international awards, including the ILTS Vanguard Award (2018), ASTS Vanguard Prize (2015), ASTS Junior Investigator Award (2013, 2015), the Hepatobiliary and Transplant Fellow Award from the AASLD (2011), the Young Investigator Award of the American Transplant Society (2009), and the American Society of Transplantation’s Distinguished Fellow Research Award (2008) among others. He has published more than 50 peer reviewed papers, most recently in the Annals of Surgery, Hepatology and the American Journal of Transplantation, and serves as associate editor for AJT and deputy editor for Liver Transplantation. His clinical interests include complex liver and biliary malignancies, living donor liver transplantation, robotic/minimally invasive liver surgery and liver transplantation for colorectal liver metastases.

R. Mark Ghobrial
Dr. Ghobrial is a Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, Director of Sherrie and Alan Conover Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation and Director of Immunobiology Research Center, Houston, Texas. He currently holds the Sherrie and Alan Conover Endowed Chair for Excellence in Liver Transplantation. Dr. Ghobrial attended Cairo University Medical School in Egypt, where he graduated in 1980 with an MD. He then completed his internship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and his surgical residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center/M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. His clinical fellowship in multi-organ transplantation was conducted at the Dumont-UCLA Liver Transplant Center. Dr. Ghobrial completed two postdoctoral basic science research fellowships in immunology: Harvard University in Boston and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He received his PhD in immunology from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Texas.
As a researcher, Dr Ghobrial maintains an active laboratory for basic science studies that focuses on transplant immunomodulation and inhibition of chronic rejection. His clinical research interests include partial liver grafting, immunosuppression, clinical outcomes, organ allocation and living donation. He has been the principal or co-investigator of NIH-sponsored basic and clinical research studies, as well as many clinical trials associated with transplantation. Dr Ghobrial is an active reviewer for several scientific journals and a member of study sections for grant review panels for National Institute of Health (NIH), federal and private funding agencies. Additionally, he has authored or co-authored numerous journal articles and book chapters and has lectured widely, both nationally and internationally, on topics related to liver disease and transplantation. Dr. Ghobrial is an active member of several surgical and transplantation societies including the American College of Surgeons (ACS), American Surgical Association (ASA) and American Association for Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). He is involved in multiple committees and services to United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), American Society of Transplantation (AST), International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS), Transplant Recipient International Organization (TRIO) and American Liver Foundation (ALF). He served as Councilor-at-Large on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) and currently serves as a Counselor-at-Large on the Board of Directors for ILTS, Chair of Investment Committee and Treasurer. Dr Ghobrial is the recipient of multiple awards and honors from the ACS, ASTS, and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). He was elected to the ASA and to the Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons-Edinburgh (FRCS, Ed).

Sukru Mehmet Erturk
Sukru Mehmet Erturk studied medicine at Cerrahpasa School of Medicine, Istanbul University, and then completed a one-year certificate program in hospital management at the Institute of Business Administration of the same university. Mehmet started his specialty training in radiology at the Sisli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital in 1998. In 2001, he was an observer at the Radiology Department of the Klinikum Grosshadern of Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich. Upon completing his training and his work as an attending radiologist at Sisli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital, Mehmet moved to Boston and completed his fellowships in management in radiology and in abdominal radiology research between 2004 and 2006 at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard Medical School, where he was also a lecturer in radiology. In 2007, he was elected as president of the Istanbul Chapter of the Turkish Society of Radiology and in 2009 he became the Secretary General of the same society, of which he is still an executive board member. Between 2016 and 2018, he was the president of the Turkish Magnetic Resonance Society. Mehmet’s areas of research and interest include topics such as abdominal imaging, health economics, and health informatics. He holds editorial and reviewer positions in various journals. Currently, he is Professor of Radiology at the Radiology Department of Istanbul University School of Medicine in Turkey. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in reputed international journals, besides numerous books (including one about hepatopancreaticobiliary imaging) and book chapters.

Mustafa Nazzal
Dr. Nazzal is associate professor in the Department of Surgery, Division
of Abdominal Transplant Surgery, at Saint Louis University School of
Medicine.
Dr Nazzal Obtained his MD degree from Ain Shams University in Cairo
, he then did a General Surgery Residency at the University of Toledo
Medical Center in Ohio. Dr Nazzal joined Cleveland Clinic for an adult
and pediatric Multiorgan abdominal transplant fellowship.
Dr Nazzal also obtained Masters of Legal Studies from Washington
University in Saint Louis.
Dr. Nazzal specializes in: adult and pediatric liver transplantation;
liver tumors and minimally invasive liver surgery; complex hepato-
biliary surgery; and split liver transplant. He performs kidney-pancreas
transplant surgery, intestinal rehabilitation surgery, and general
surgery on transplant and cirrhotic patients.
His research includes pre-transplant loco-regional therapy for
hepatocellular carcinoma and post-transplant outcomes, patient
derived xenograft models for HCC. His research also includes the use of
Normothermic perfusion pump to mitigate ischemia reperfusion injury
in marginal deceased donor livers.
A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he holds memberships
in the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, Society for Clinical
Vascular Surgery, American Association for the Study of Liver Disease,
and the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.

Niamh Conlon
Emir Hoti
Mr Emir Hoti is a Consultant Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon
at Saint Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. He also serves as
the Director of the National Liver Transplantation Programme.
Mr Hoti trained as Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon at Centre
Hépato-Biliaire, Hôpital Paul-Brousse, Paris, France. He joined Saint
Vincent’s University Hospital in 2010.
Mr Hoti has published and lectured on the subjects of hepatobiliary
and liver transplantation surgery. His work focuses also on the use of
minimally invasive techniques to treat liver and pancreatic cancer.
Mr Hoti acts as a mentor for many young surgeons and runs the Surgical
Hepatobiliary/Liver Transplantation Fellowship training programme at
Saint Vincent’s University Hospital.
