Support Schools for Africa
In sub-Saharan Africa alone, 45 million children don’t get the chance to goto school. For most of Africa’s children, education represents the onlychance to escape from entrenched poverty. School is about much morethan providing work skills. It’s playing an increasingly vital role in helpingchildren secure their own future – improving confidence, communitycohesion and providing knowledge of health and nutrition to keep childrensafe and well.
In the child-friendly Schools for Africa campaign, UNICEF is working withpartners in six of Africa’s most needy countries. The programme includesbuilding new schools, improving water and sanitation facilities in existingschools, teacher training, sports and play facilities, school furniture andproviding equipment from pens and pencils to sports equipment.
With Inspired Gifts, you can support the Schools for Africa programme witha gift of £15 to £150, or provide school furniture or learning materials.

Vaccines received by theUNICEF country office orpartner organisation and storedin refrigerated cabinets.
You purchase anInspired Gift of 100vaccines for a friend.
Vaccines aredispatched fromthe warehouse.
How is my money spent?Whichever gift you decide to purchase, you will enable UNICEF to providethat item to vulnerable children and communities around the world. Wecannot tell you exactly which country your gift will be supplied to, but wewill give examples of where some of the supplies have benefited childrenand communities. For example, if you buy a gift of measles vaccines,UNICEF will transport 100 vaccines to one of its country offices or partnerorganisations. The illustration below shows the journey your vaccines willgo on to reach vulnerable children.
Vaccines ‘quality checked’before despatch.
During emergencies, planesand helicopters may be used todeliver vaccines to children asquickly as possible.
Vaccines transferredto smaller portablerefrigerators foronward distribution.
Vaccines delivered insmall vaccine carriersto local clinics andimmunisation centres.

By any means! Bicycles, motorcycles, evendonkeys - all play a partin reaching the mostremote communities.
Vaccines are monitoredto ensure they are keptat the right temperatureto remain effective.
Vulnerablechildren areprotected!
UNICEF suppliedalmost 2.6 billion dosesof vaccine in 2008.
Changing needs and prioritiesThe range of gifts we supply is determined by the needs of the communitiesand programmes that UNICEF supports. Sometimes, as needs change overthe course of the year, we might substitute a particular gift bought for arelated item that is needed more, ie chalks instead of pencils, or water tanksinstead of water pumps. Where we know that this might happen at the timeof printing, we’ve clearly labelled these items in the brochure. Please seeonline for further updates.

Mosquito nets
The lives of as many as 500,000 children could be saved every year inAfrica, if all children under the age of five slept under mosquito netstreated with insect repellant. In a study in Kenya, these nets reduceddeaths from malaria by 44 per cent, reduced the number of childrenadmitted to hospital suffering from malaria by 41 per cent and reducedchildhood deaths from all causes by one third.
UNICEF is the world’s leading provider of mosquito nets, focusing onprotecting children and pregnant women. Health workers train women inthe correct and consistent use of nets to prevent disease.

Prevention of mother-to-childtransmission of HIVMary (pictured) discovered she had HIV when pregnant with heryoungest child. She is one of the lucky ones. Almost every minuteof every day a baby is born with HIV - passed on from their motherduring pregnancy, labour or delivery.
Mary attended a clinic where they routinely test pregnant womenfor HIV. Her diagnosis came in time to help prevent her passing thevirus to her child, and she received treatment and care so that herbaby was born free from HIV.
“It was very simple. Just one tablet when I went into labour andsyrup for my baby, Samuel, at hospital after his birth.” Mary Wasike
Mary received an opportunity currently denied to millions of othermums-to-be, and thanks to the life-saving medicine she receives, she has the chance to care for her children and watch them grow.
“When the nurse told me Samuel was born free from HIV, it wasthe happiest day of my life. I was so excited, I couldn’t sleep.”

Children and climate changeChildren, especially in Africa and Asia, are already suffering as aresult of climate change. They face a future in which changes intemperature and precipitation mean that: disasters, violence anddisease will be more frequent and intense; clean water becomesless accessible and incomes will fall. The negative impacts ofclimate change are predicted to lead to increased child poverty, more inequality, higher malnutrition and death rates.
UNICEF is already working with children and their communitiesto deal with climate change by:
• supporting communities to better prepare for natural disastersas they become more frequent,
• tackling the problem of contaminated and/or diminishing watersupplies by providing wells and pumps and using innovativetechniques such as rainwater harvesting,
• providing education to help children adapt to their changingclimate, including practical learning through tree planting, installing solar panels and starting school gardens.Un
