The English Colonies: Background information

• One of Columbus’ greatest impacts was the influence his exploration had on other European nations. One of those nations was Great Britain.

• As Spain and Portugal were exploring and settling the New World, Britain wanted to get in the globalization game and expand their power and influence.

• In 1583, Queen Elizabeth I granted Sir Humphrey Gilbert a charter in which he would be sent to explore the New World and claim land in the name of England

• England would sponsor 3 expeditions from 1583-1587 and each would fail

• The first expedition was led by Amadas and Barlowe and their goal was to EXPLORE, DOCUMENT, AND MAP their findings of the new land
