News and Notes from Pastor Rhoda
An informational meeting with details
about this year‟s Chicago Mission
Service Trip was presented early in
May. Reminder…This annual mission
service project is open to all high
school youth and adults, including
this year‘s Confirmation students.
Parents and/or interested adults in
the congregation are especially
urged to consider accompanying
our youth.
The dates for the Chicago trip are
Monday, July 25 through Sunday,
July 31.
During our week in Chicago we
will serve in a variety of ways,
including helping at the Greater
Chicago Food Depository, unloading
and distributing a semi-truck load of
food at Will Feed, working on
renovation projects at Olivet United
Methodist Church, interacting with
children at Marcy-Newbury Center,
and more. Fun activities include a
White Sox vs. Detroit baseball game,
and visiting the ―Sears‖ Tower, Navy
Pier, the Chicago Art Institute, the
Field Museum of Natural History,
China Town, Millennium Park, and the
Chicago Temple. Again, please note:
Registration deadline is June 12!
Page 10
Participants are expected to attend
a mandatory meeting on Sunday
evening, June 26, and to help with
a Chicago Hotdog fundraiser on
Sunday, July 10 to raise money for
paint, gas, and other supplies. Trip
details and registration forms can
be downloaded from the youth
page on our church website
(www.clearlake umc.org). If you
have any further questions, contact
Pastor Rhoda.
REMINDER: Registrations are due
earlier than last year. Again, the
deadline is June 12 this year.

CLUMC Choir Robes Our ―old‖ blue choir robes were

given to us as a memorial; it was
decided to share rather than ―sell‖.
“Perspectives”
IN THIS COUNTRY
people, especially
commercial interests,
make a big deal
about Christmas and
Easter. I never see
anything in the stores about
Pentecost, however. Pentecost is
the third of the big three, the three
high and holy days in the Christian
faith. Yet, many people, even
Christian people, aren‘t aware of
Pentecost or what we celebrate on
that day. It‘s no big deal to them.
IT IS A BIG DEAL THOUGH. Without
the power of the Holy Spirit, we are
helpless to know God and live for
him. People of faith waited for
hundreds of years for the promise of
the Father, the promised Holy Spirit
to be given to all people who put
their trust in God in Christ. The
prophet Joel had verbalized this
promise of God (2:28-29): “I will
pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will
prophesy, your old men will dream
dreams, your young men will see
vision. Even on my servants, both
men and women, I will pour out my
Spirit in those days.”
IN THE TIME OF JOEL and up to the
day of Pentecost after Jesus
ascension into heaven, the Holy
Spirit had been given only to
particular people at particular times
for particular tasks. God‘s promise
was that the Holy Spirit would be
available to all people, at all times,
and in all places, through faith in
Christ.
WHEN JESUS‟ DISCIPLES were sad
because he would die and leave
them, he told them (John 16:7, 13),
“It is for your good that I am going
away. Unless I go away, the
Counselor will not come to you; but
if I go, I will send him to you. …when
he, the Spirit of Truth, comes, he will
guide you into all truth.” Just
before he ascended into heaven,
Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not
leave Jerusalem, but wait for the
gift my Father promised, which you
have heard me speak about. For
John baptized with water, but in a
few days, you will be baptized with
the Holy Spirit.”
FOR TEN DAYS they waited and
prayed, and when the day of
Pentecost came, with the sound
from heaven like the blowing of a
violent wind the Holy Spirit filled the
place where they were gathered
and filled each of them with God‘s
presence and power to fulfill God‘s
purposes. Jesus had already made
clear their mission and had sent
them out: to ―make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit, and teaching them to obey
all that I have commanded you.
And, lo, I will be with you always.‖
(continued…) Page 3
―PERSPECTIVES‖, cont…
The church was born. Its purposes
are still the same. The Spirit still fills
people with his presence and
power—all for the asking.
GOD DESIRES THAT we know him
through Jesus, that, as the church,
we serve him as his hands and feet
in the world, that we spread the
good news about what God has
done in our lives and the lives of
others, and that we look for God to
work in power through us. In
thinking about Pentecost I was
reminded of an acronym KITE that
we used a few years ago to guide
us in disciple making and
encourage us to rely on the Spirit.
Know Jesus
Invest in the church
Tell others your faith stories
Expect God to show up
AND LET‟S ALL OF US SHOW UP and
invite others to come with us to
celebrate the gift of the Holy
Spirit—God for us, God with us, and
God in us—on Pentecost Sunday,
June 12. For the fun of it…wear red!

“REMIX 316”
Begins June 5
Remix 316: Part high energy engaging worship service, part small group style youth group, part recreational games and physical/ mental activities. When: Launch Date is Sunday, June 5 (3:16 pm) Where: CLUMC Sanctuary Who: Everyone - Grades 7th-12th [with Directors Chris Phalen, Clear Lake UMC and Chris Arians, First Congregational Church] Purpose: Strengthen our relationship with Jesus. Remix 316 is 100% all about reaching teens, and helping them become closer to God through worship in a safe environment, surrounded by their peers; guided by adult faith friends.
We are about building relationships with God, Jesus, and other members of the family of God while helping keep teens (7th-12th grades) stay on track, and give them a constructive outlet where they can ask the hard questions and… find sanctuary from all of the pressures in their daily lives.
With God's word as our guide, we will take a new look at the issues facing teens today and show how God speaks to teens addressing these very issues. -- 3:00 pm, Doors open for ―Club 316‖ -- 3:16 pm, Worship set begins -- 4:30 pm, Remix activities conclude -- 4:30-5:00 pm, Club 316 free time for students, time for visits with students/parents There are many opportunities for the congregation to be involved: first, prayer. Along with prayer one of the greatest needs being small group leaders each week. Other needs are: musicians, greeters, assistants for games and snacks, and acting as ―go-fers.‖ Contact Pastor Diana, or Chris to let them know you want to be a part of REMIX 316!

MEMBERHIP CARE & EVANGELISM
OFFERS HOME MEALS MINISTRY
Our Membership Care and
Evangelism Committee now has a
team of volunteers to serve fellow
church members in need of short-
term meal assistance. The home
meals ministry through Clear Lake
UMC is another way to demonstrate
caring or those in our church family
who may be recuperating from
surgery or moving through a different
medical crisis. As we reach out in
this way, we witness our love for one
other… which could make a big
difference in someone‘s recovery.
