Nobody can stop us to speak it outand to demand this.

We want women departments at the university. Is there no one inthe nations and in the government who has a guilty conscience be-cause we havent been given this right? Is there nobody who is afraid

of the curses of the following generation?

Muslim girls and women in Russia have entered all branches of theuniversity and they are very successful. Whats the difference be-tween them and us? They are Muslims, we are Muslims. They are hu-man beings, we are, too. Is the difference perhaps that we are Otto-man? No, this is not the reason.

The reason lies in our beloved government: There are people who donot understand this point of view and who do not think about it.

Yes, we demand this. Nobody can stop us to speak out and demand

this. We insist on this, because this demand is our right, ourhuman right.

Baka lkelere yksek eitim yapmak iin giden kadn rencilerin tantm, Osmanl mpara-torluunda da kadnlarn niversitede renim grme talebi iin gereke olarak kullanld.

Kadnlar Dnyasand the Ottoman Societyfor the Defence of Womens Rights werethe main promoters of the demands forthe higher education of women.

The members of the magazine and theassociation established strategic relation-ships with liberal representatives of con-temporary political, cultural and intellec-tual life in order to realize their ideas.

They argued for the higher education ofwomen in the context of womens qual-ity of life including womens liberty and

When women could immatriculate in the Faculty ofLaw in 1921, there was a negative reaction, whichcontinued in the case of the Faculty of Medicine. Inthe press many articles appeared saying that it wasimpossible for women to be a doctor. Apart from tra-dition they argued with womens biological difference. The women, however, took on the struggle. In groups

they visited prominent gures in the country one byone, trying to convince them. They were succesful, be-cause of their extremely persistent visits and becauseof the articles they organized in the press in their fa-vour. In September 1922, the Faculty of Medicine ac-cepted seven women students.

Glass ceiling at the universityI became associate professor in 1958 when the Chair of Public Admi-nistration at Ankara University was being established. I started to te-ach there. The chair of this department was given to a male academicwho was younger than me. The argument was that he had been emp-loyed at the university for a longer time. He did not want me to be aprofessor, using a lot of ar guments. One of them was that the topic of

my thesis did not belong to the eld of public administration. Actuallyhe did not want to tolerate a woman as chair holder. Today we wouldcall this gender based discrimination. I left the Department of PublicAdministration and started to teach in the Department of Constituti-onal Law. Of course, this change made it necessary to work on a newthesis, too. Finally I became a full professor in 1966.
