University Club
Newsletter
Dear Members,
Will March come in like a lamb? February certainly roared like a cold snow
lion! Never-the-less our Club provided lots of fun to warm you up and friends
to enjoy. We started the month with the Super Bowl Party. It was a great
game with the winner in doubt until the last play - an interception! Most were
rooting for the Seahawks but those from the North East were pulling for the
Patriots. Indeed it was an exciting game to watch with Club friends.
Remember Professor Hirt's research on how you feel when "My Team" wins?
You know!
Next, we were privileged to hear Dr. James Madison talk about Hoosier
History and his most recent book entitled, “Hoosiers: A New History of
Indiana”. Dr. Madison instilled pride in us when he declared that our best US
President, Abraham Lincoln, was a Hoosier, no matter what anyone else
thought! He even had a picture of one of Abe's school papers. This presenta-
tion gave us all new information about Indiana History. Next, we learned a
lot about ourselves when Professor Rose told us about his research with
twins. Hope it didn't scare you!
We want to thank everyone who donated to the Scholarship Fund. It’s never
too late to make a contribution to the Scholarship Fund. Just make your check
payable to the IU Foundation and send
it into the Club office. You can find the
forms on our new website. Easy!
Mark April 10th on your calendar so
you can meet the scholarship recipients
and enjoy lunch at the Club’s Annual
Meeting. We will be electing the Board
of Officers for the 2015-2016 year.

March's birth flower is the daffodil, which means unequaled love; the sun is always shining whenever your significant other is around. The other March flower is the jonquil, which signifies desire for affection returned. It also is used to convey sympathy.

Professor Paul Helmke, former Mayor of Fort Wayne, IN and Chairman of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, understands how the controversial topic of guns, violence, and the second amendment engender strong opinions and passionate debate. Is there a common ground where we can meet and rationally discuss this important
issue? Paul Helmke believes that when armed with the facts, we can reach that common ground.

SPRING - LOW GAP - SATURDAY, APRIL 18TH
In the 1991 edition of Nature Walks in Southern Indiana, Alan McPherson describes Low Gap Trail as a
"rigorous day hike." When we did it in 2014 it was a workout. While much of the trail is on old roadbeds,
expect to see spring wildflowers, particularly in the rock shelter area. They will distract from the ups and
downs, and aching muscles. For those wanting to stretch themselves, while exploring the backcountry.
Leave Time: 7:30 a.m. Carpool from 1505 E. Richland Drive to Morgan Monroe State Forest.
Distance: 10.7 miles. Estimated hiking time: 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 hours. Difficulty: Strenuous

Swope Art Museum
Thursday, March 12, Departs 8:15 AM to Terre Haute
Recently named “One of the 10 best places to see art in smaller cities” by USA Today, we will visit this celebrated mu-
seum which formally opened its doors to the public in 1942 with nationwide attention. Its founding collection contained
new works by artists such as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Charles Burchfield, Zoltan Sepeshy and Edward Hop-
per, and it remains the feature for which the Swope is best known. Of note to our residents, an exhibit called Fertile
Ground: Midwest Printmaking Traditions will feature 10 works by Rudy Pozzatti. After lunch, we will tour the Indiana
Theatre. This iconic Terre Haute landmark opened on January 28, 1922, and occupies a special place in American thea-
tre architecture design. The Theatre was built by Terre Haute resident T.W. Barhydt to be a lasting gift to the city of
Terre Haute and it was designed by America’s preeminent designer John Eberson to be his first prototype atmospheric
theater which became his signature style that is recognized to be the gold standard of American theatre design. Addi-
tional tour possible. Price TBA (after lunch arrangements have been made).
