Invitation to Conference on Materials Technology (MATTECH ‘12)
Dear Sir,
Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute is not only recognized because of its academic excellence, but is also well-
known for the diversified events and seminars it organizes. It welcomes students from all over Pakistan
to participate and benefit from such workshops and conferences.
American Society of Materials (ASM) – GIKI Student Chapter is organizing an All Pakistan Conference
on Materials Technology, MATTECH ’12 on 3rd
Feb -5th
Feb, 2012.
Discussion on the technological developments in the field of metallurgy, materials and manufacturing
engineering will be focused during this conference. The event will be honoured by the presence of
leading researchers of material sciences and will thereby provide an opportunity to discover the latest
scientific achievements in these fields.
Moreover, MATTECH ’12 intends to foster R&D collaborations amongst academia, research institutions
and relevant industries and therefore to derive maximum benefits from this forum, the conference is
open for all the faculty members, graduate, under graduate and intermediate students. Kindly, view the

Brief Description of the Event(Undergraduate, Graduate, PhD. Level)
Seminar on “Foreign Internships” Every year students from Faculty of Materials Science & Engineering – GIK Institute, are sent
abroad for internships. Countries like Canada, Korea (KAIST) and some European countries
especially Germany and Spain (ICMAB) welcome our students as interns. These internships
open a panorama of options for the students to select from for their future and build a firm
career goal. Also, they add up to ones credentials and makes him/her a competent candidate
for graduate admissions and jobs.
To give a better understanding of how these internships work, how to prepare your selves forthe opportunity and the application procedures, a seminar will be conducted by the faculty
members and GIKI students, who spent a memorable time on their internships abroad. The
speakers will also brief about the difficulties faced by them while staying outside Pakistan
(accommodation, food etc.).
Metallography Competition
Metallography plays perhaps the most important role in inspecting and evaluating the
properties of materials. Now a days it has been adopted by many industries to evaluate the
performance of the material. Realizing the importance of this procedure, MATTECH’12 willconduct a Metallography Competition. Participants can choose any material and perform
metallography at their institutes. Photogenic structures will weigh more when it comes to
selecting the winner. Material selection will also carry marks. The participants are required to
bring with them a certificate, signed by their respective HOD, stating the originality of their
work with regard to the preparation of their samples. Participants are also required to bring
their etched samples along with a soft copy of the micrograph at 200X, 500X and 800X for
evaluation purposes. A maximum of two participants from a university will be considered a
team. In this module, judges will evaluate the microstructure and ask related questions.
Besides, questions from audience will also be a part of the module. The participants will have topresent color printed microstructures on A4 sheets at a magnification of 200X, 500X and 800X.

Industrial Seminars:
Mattech’12 will be attended by various Industrial Representatives all giving a presentation
about their specific industry. These will also include our university alumni working in the
industrial sector. Industry representatives will give a small presentation on the cutting edge
engineering they do day in day out and familiarize you with their industry. Speakers from
various industries will be there to answer your queries. The Seminar will also serve purpose as a
career guidance forum since Industrial Representatives will be more than willing to answer you
career related questions and provide you with Internship and Job Opportunities.
Magazine:
All the event details will be compiled and published as a magazine. This magazine will be sent to
ASM International as a summary of our activities as a student chapter working towards
promotion of materials science and engineering both at GIK Institute and all over Pakistan. Allthe project reports, micrographs, abstracts and other event details will be published with the
participant’s reference. If any team fails to bring with it the mentioned printed material, we
regret to say that their contribution to MATTECH ’12 will not be acknowledged in the magazine.
Presentations by leading Scientists in the field of Materials Science &
Engineering
We have contacted leading Pakistani Researchers in Materials Science & Engineering, to
present their own research either in Pakistan or abroad. Students will get to learn the dynamics
of research and will be mentally stimulated with ideas to research on new frontiers in the field
of Materials Sciences and Engineering. Since Liaoning is still going on, the complete list of guest
speakers will be notified later.
Prof. Dr. Fazal A Khalid (SI) Pro-rector academics, will give a special seminar on the “Latest
discoveries in Materials Sciences and Engineering”. This is to acquaint you with the new
discoveries and the high achievements that have been accomplished in the field of Material
Sciences around the world and motivate students to pursue research on these latest discoveries.
