ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

THIS ASSIGNMENT ASSESSES THE FOLLOWING MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

LO1 – Have a knowledge and understanding of the history and major accomplishments of computer science.

LO3 – Have a knowledge and understanding of future trends and horizon scanning. LO4 – Have a knowledge and understanding of the social and human aspects of

computing.

THE ASSIGNMENT TASK:

Please revise the following units before you begin this assignment: Unit 1. Computing Development History Unit 2. Development Trends of Computing Systems Unit 3. Computing and Society Unit 4. Social Networks

Given what is covered in Units 1 and 2, you should have obtained a general understanding of the development of computing systems, including a background of history, key contributors in the field, and future trends. Units 3 and 4 introduced more specific areas of computing and explained how computing is closely correlated with humans and society. In this assignment, you need to produce an informed survey paper in the discipline of social computing. There are various areas of social computing discipline to date, including social networks, social media, and social games. Some well-known example platforms are given below.

Area Social Networks Social Media Social Games

Examples

You can pick one area (and ONLY one area) of interest to carry out the survey. The title of the paper can be tailored to your chosen research subject, for example, if you choose to research social games, then the paper can be called “A Survey of Social Game Development”.

The requirements of the survey paper include:

Evolution History and Development Trend(s)

The first half of the essay should follow the structure and mindset of Units 1 and 2 to introduce the development history and future trends for the area of social computing that you have chosen. The discussion should include (but not limited to) the following topics:

o A brief history of the chosen area of social computing, such as outlining influential people and major events.

o A conceptual model for this type of social computing area. This can be a generic architecture to describe systems in this area, based on your research findings or your own understanding. (Refer to Unit 1.3 for an example that describes generic computing systems.)

o Future development opportunities for this area of social computing.

Case Study

The second half of the paper should use a well-established social computing platform as the case study of the survey. You can choose from the examples given in the table above, or find one that is of particular interest to you.

o Describe various technologies involved in the platform (refer to Unit 3 on examples of explaining key technologies).

o Explain how the system is constructed in such a way that addresses particular needs or expectations of users. For example, an illustration of the network architecture model, or how the product/system delivers required information/content to users.

o Analyse the reasons for its success or failure in the market. (The analysis should be made in the perspective of a computer scientist rather than a business person.)

Academic Conventions

Please study Unit 10. Academic Conventions on how to identify and use sources to conduct research, and how to reference them suitably in academic format.

Should you need to quote statements from existing research work, it is strongly encouraged that you try to use your own words to explain arguments and provide references to any source material, rather than to rely on quotation marks “…” to copy and paste original sentences (use these in moderation).

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:This is assignment is to be submitted and marked anonymously. Students should ONLY use their student ID number to identify themselves on their work. Work submitted via Canvas for anonymous marking will automatically have an anonymity number allocated to it.

Please submit the paper via the relevant link in the Assignment page on the module’s Canvas site.

The maximum permissible word limit for the main body of the report is 2500 words, excluding covering pages, references, tables, and illustrations.

As part of normal University guidelines, you are permitted to be under or over the word limit by a margin of 10% (hence, between 2250 and 2750 words in the main body are permissible without penalty).
