The 1930’s cour tyard building faces a prominent city street, making it a prominent face of the College. The design vision bridges the preserved historic architecture exterior with modern technological advancements on the interior. Classrooms and offices house the English depar tment and the College’s newspaper. The building will undergo upgrades to all building systems, seismic strengthening, interior finishes, and access compliance, and the cour tyard will be upgraded to suppor t multiple types of teaching and gathering.

The Plan reinforces St. Mary’s vision of shaping young minds into word citizens, through spaces that suppor t a robust International Baccalaureate curriculum. It focuses on providing a new 30,500 SF STE(A)M building, a future 26,700 Academic building, and 70,600 SF of upgraded existing spaces. Its goal is to enhance and reinforce the academic, pedagogical, curriculum, and cultural aspirations over the next fif teen years.

Approach from Cal Poly Pomona Supergraphics beneath the I-Poly Walkway

The structure provides multiple prominent vehicle entries along University Drive and Collins Street, with safe and intimate pedestrian pathways traversing it to reinforce the connection between the University and I-Poly high school to the south. The “I-Poly walkway” creates a unique environment of skylights and landscaped oasis. Strategic branding and design features of vehicle entries, elevator cores, shade canopies, and environmental graphics weave throughout the structure to create wayfinding and a visible presence.

Located on a 60,000 SF site along the nor thern side of campus, the facility responds to active and passive student users who traverse along the existing pedestrian spine, linking the parking structure to the main campus. The three major programmatic functions include; a health clinic with ten clinical exam rooms, a wellness center, and a counseling center. The program also includes a relaxation station, pharmacy, lab, and administrative suppor t spaces.

The Plan aligns with the College’s strategic plan and provides recommendations for new and renovated 1930’s infrastructure that suppor t the academic community composed of 17,000 students representing 100 nations and speaking 95 different languages. The goals of the plan are to; emphasize students as the focus; bring image, identity and visibility to each School, in suppor t of their academic mission; foster social interaction among students and faculty; promote collaboration between depar tments; and activate the two major landscape quadrangles of the campus.

idea-gram Black Box Roof Terrace Entry

Located on the ar tistically enlightened Cal State LA campus, the new high school takes hints from its neighboring buildings through its brick “wallpaper” and its scale. The floor plan is inspired by Warhol’s repetitive modulated pattern, a through double loaded corridor based on the modulated panel system at the sough facade. A Black Box beams above, showcasing the possibilities of the activities of expression that can take place inside; visual per formances, dance, theater, and music through the framed billboard.
