    October 9– 13, 2013: Arcadia

Set in an elegant English country estate, Arcadia moves

back and forth between 1809 and the present as the author

explores the nature of truth and time, the difference be-

tween classical and romantic temperaments, and the dis-

ruptive influence of sex on our life. A witty masterpiece

of misunderstanding and the quest for knowledge!

1995 NY Drama Critics’ Circle Award-Best Play

    November 21—25, 2013: Les Misérables

Les Mis is an epic tale of passion and destruction in 19th

century France, a nation in the grip of revolution.

Convict Jean Valjean is on the run, hunted relentlessly by

the policeman Javert for breaking his parole. With Javert

closing in, Valjean has no choice but to fight for his life

and sacrifice everything to protect the people he loves.

Upcoming Events in the Department of Theatre

    February 20—24, 2014: General O’s Toenail

In 1974, the South Korean government censorship committee

refused to grant a license for this play to be preformed because

it satirized overbearing bureaucrats and warped military

thinking. The play features, however, an imaginative blending

of farce, allegory, and theatre of the absurd as the author

focuses on a young draftee and the unfortunate circumstances

    of his military service.

March 26—30, 2014: The Servant of Two Masters

    A high-flung/low-brow comedy about Truffaldino, a

hungry servant who hatches a scheme to double his

wages (and his meals) by serving two masters at once.

One of the great classic commedia dell’arte plays of

    world drama.

    An Arena Theatre performance.

    April 24—28, 2014: Pippin

At the goading of the ominous and omnipresent Leading

Player, Pippin, the eldest son of King Charlemagne, sets

out to make his life special by dabbling in war, sex, and

politics before finding love. Broad comedy, bawdy

characters, and magical but dark situations. Mature

    themes.

Brown Bag Lunch Program presents: Rock the Piano!,

    October 4, 2013

Vermillion native, Adam Nelson (Chicago), returns home

to unleash his "inner rock star"! Like most typical children,

Nelson struggled with traditional classical piano lessons.

However, he persevered until he got to high school when

he started focusing on playing horn (the "French" one),

singing in the choir and marching in drum corps.

Fortunately, the seeds of his real musical calling had been

sewn many years earlier in those early piano lessons. On

his own, he began to hone his ability to play by ear and

taught himself countless songs by the Beatles, the Who,

Led Zeppelin, Elton John and Ben Folds. Little did he

know that this little side project would turn into a

promising career. Join us to hear the amazing results!

    The Written Word: October 28—November 24, 2013

The Written Word is a group exhibition featuring artwork

by five contemporary artists, who explore the visual

materiality of word-based texts. Participating artists

include Elissa Levy, Trong Nguyen, Karen Baldner, An

Xiao Mina and Nina Katchadourian. The artists use

literature, the act of writing itself, or the library as

inspiration for their visual art installations. The artworks

use performative, documentary and interactive approaches,

all of which elevate the written word, either found or newly

generated, to new levels of sensory experience.

Brown Bag Lunch Program presents: Jami Lynn &

    Dylan James , October 11, 2013

Black Hills duo Jami Lynn & Dylan James met on the

street in the summer of 2012. Their fortuitous meeting not

only revealed their shared love of folk, bluegrass, and jazz,

but marked the beginning of an ambitious duo project

harnessing Jami's powerful vocals and Dylan's first rate

flat-picking skills. After a few weeks of working up

material, their hearts were set on a full length album

featuring songs written by each. "Cluck & Croon" was

released in April of 2013. "Equal parts Carter Family,

Billie Holiday, and Tin Pan Alley" as described by

NoDepression.com's Mat DiRiso. Lynn's vocal prowess,

delicate finger picking, and West Virginia style claw-

hammer banjo blend seamlessly with James's ringing

tenor, driving guitar, and old-time fiddling. Their diverse

instrumentation as well as their unique arrangements of

traditional American folk songs and jazz numbers sets

them on the edge of each genre. Both are native South

Dakotans and are currently based out of Rapid City, SD.

USD Opera’s production of ‘Dido and Aeneas’ captures

national recognition via The American Prize

USD Opera's spring 2012 production of "Dido and Aeneas" was

awarded third prize in the National Opera Association's 2011-12

Opera Production Competition. Entries in the competition were

"blindly" judged via a videotaped performance and statement of the

director's concept and artistic choices. Universities were divided

into five categories based on production budget, size of overall

music program and the level of vocal training of the cast members.

"Dido and Aeneas" was directed by Dr. Tracelyn Gesteland. Dr.

David Holdhusen served as the conductor for the production, and

Rebecca Hebda, a sophomore from Yankton, was the

choreographer. Recent past winners of this award include the

University of Colorado-Boulder and the College-Conservatory of

Music of the University of Cincinnati. "For our opera program to

receive an honor bestowed upon some of the most esteemed opera

programs in the country speaks to the level of talent here at USD,"

Gesteland said. "To receive recognition on a national level is a huge

achievement for everyone involved in this production.

"The cast included Natalie Campbell, Cody Perk, Laura

Bertschinger, Amanda Rich, Laura Kuschel, Katie Pacza, Kristin

Edwards, Aubrey Sea, Matt Black, Ken Granle, Marissa Morris,

and Chaya Gordon-Bland in addition to the USD Chamber Singers,

USD Chamber Orchestra, and dancers. Technical aspects of the

production were provided by the Department of Theatre.

    USD is in Division 3.
