INTRODUCTION

This bibliography is an attempt to identify those programmed materials for

library education created between 1960 and 1974. Originally, it was intended

to be a list of programmed texts designed to instruct graduate students oflibrarianship in the basic subject matter of the profession: cataloging andclassification, reference, administration. As the search progressed and cor-respondence with authors increased, it became apparent that the original scope

of the bibliography was too narrow. Many programmed sequences have been cre-ated in the years 1960-74 to teach various levels of students about almost allaspects of the library. For example, there exist numerous slide/tape presenta-

tions which will orient college students to their libraries, programmed se-quences to train clerical employees in library methods, a number of programmedmaterials to teach students how to catalog and classify, an on-line computer-assisted program to instruct librarians in the use of MEDLINE, a programmed

text to teach Russian to librarians, and a computer-assisted instructional pro-gram to train elementary school students how to locate information in periodi-cals. It seemed that librarians, teachers and students at all levels of theeducational hierarchy should know about this wealth of material; therefore, the scope of the bibliography was enlarged to include as many aspects of li-brarianship as there were programmed marerials to teach it. The basic criter-ion for inclusion was that the material be some kind of self-paced instructionalsequence concerned with library education.

No titles were excluded because of their format. Materials listed include pro-grammed texts, theses, slide/tape presentations, audiocassettes, computer pro-grams and programs stored on computer tape, transparencies, filmstrips, andoccasionally journal articles. However, journal articles were cited only whenthey described a program of instruction not available for general distribution,or when it was difficult to cite the program in accepted bibliographic form. When this latter situation occurred, the article was cited because it generallydescribed each program much more completely than a contrived bibliographiccitation could. Films were not included in the bibliography because they arenot self-paced sequences, and Irving Lieberman's A Working Bibliography ofCommercially Available Audio-visual Materials for the Teaching of Library Sci-ence seemed to cover the subject.

The number of citations produced by searching and correspondence with authorssuggested that the list be classified so that it could be accessed easily bysubject. The headings found in the annual directory issue of the Journal ofEducation for Librarianship were selectively utilized to classify the bibli-ography because they defined teaching areas of contemporary librarianship.

I regret that the bibliography is not annotated. The main obstacle to fullannotation was the fact that it was simply impossible to examine all of thematerial. However, if time permits, certain sections of the bibliography--Cataloging and Classification, Indexing, and Reference, for example--may beannotated for future publication.

Finally, I wish to thank Hardy Carroll, School of Librarianship, WesternMichigan University, and Richard Chapin, Director of Libraries, Michigan StateUniversity, for their interest and support in seeing this bibliography to aconclusion. I accept full responsibility for errors and omissions, but Iwould appreciate it if omissions were brought to my attention.
