CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (CFUW) Leona MacDonald, CFUW Liaison

1. CFUW/GWI a) Feb. 28th Club News –The Perth and District Club, requested that President Grace Hollett forward a letter to The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizen-ship requesting Canada to repeal The Canada/United States (US) Safe Third Country Agreement, with the argument that since the signing of the recent Executive order banning Muslims from the US for 120 days, the US is no longer considered a safe haven for refugees. b) CFUW submitted a brief on Women’s Economic Security to the Status of Women Committee which will examine issues such as improving women’s economic situation while ensuring equal participation in the Canadian economy. c) Resolutions: The advocacy committee will consider the several amendments received for our club’s safe-water-on-reserves resolution, at its March 31st meeting. d) A special motion regarding a dues increase, that does not include an amount, was circulated 120 days before the AGM, so that it can be discussed and voted upon at the June AGM. The expected GWI fee increase for this year was indefinitely deferred. e) March 28th – A committee is working on our club’s nominations towards the 100 awards for CFUW members who have made outstanding contributions in CFUW and/or to the wider community.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NOTICE OF MOTION RE CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES Agnes Collins, Constitutional Chair The Board has approved the following motions which will be voted on by the membership at our AGM on Monday, May 29, 2017. Motion #1 Under Article 6 a) (Officers) suspend the position of Assistant Treasurer and under Article 8 b) (Board of Directors) suspend the position of Dining Room Chair with the understanding that either or both can be reconsidered when needed. Motion #2 Under Article 8 b) (Board of Directors) remove the Chair of the Continuing Education Committee as a Board member and under Article 9 c) (Standing Committees Reporting Directly to the Board) add the Continuing Education Committee. The regular format for the meeting had been changed as Dr Paul Thomas had agreed to come and speak to the Committee and other interested club members concerning issues of Electoral Reform. Dr Tho-mas included in his discussion the ten points he had provided to the Parliamentary Commission on Electoral Reform-these can be found on-line. https://openparliament.ca/committees/electoral-reform/42-1/26/dr-paul-thomas-2/only/ The next Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 5:00 pm to 7:00pm. Kindly note that everyone interested is welcome to attend. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
COMMUNICATIONS Linda Thomas, Chair
The updating and revising of the content of the website is progressing. It is more than half way complete. There will be a Photo Gallery added to the website, but it will take some time to complete before it becomes active. Your photos of your events and activities are invited to be submitted to the Communications Committee for the Photo Gallery. The committee is recruiting new members. We need you to fulfill positions that make up our committee. Individually, these positions are not onerous jobs. For instance, we need someone who has an interest in taking on that of webmaster. There will definitely be assistance available and the new format is easier to work with than that of the current website. All the positions are important in communicating with the membership. Please consider finding out what is involved.
FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE HOME TOUR Fund Raiser Oct. 21, 2017
The Home Tour planners require your assistance to recruit homes for this important Club fun/fundraiser. We are not asking for suggestions on beautiful large homes at this time but rather if you know someone who you believe has an appropriate home for the Tour. Perhaps you have a friend who knows such a home owner and would be willing to help us. If you have someone in mind please contact Dale Laird (please note email address in the directory is incorrect). I would prefer to speak to you about the possible referral prior to your making a request of the home owner.
The Care Bears are very happy this year. They collected $215.00 for the CFUW's International Women's Day project - Match International. A big thank you to everyone who fed the bears and helped women's groups the world over. Sandy Millen
CINEMA 54 Dale Laird, Convener LADIES IN LAVENDER
Fri., April 21 6:30 Doors and Cash Bar open 7:00 Film Post film: Conversation & Dessert Popcorn, dessert, tea/coffee $8.00 They saved a stranger from the sea and in return he stole their hearts. Starring two great “Dames” of the British Cinema, Judy Dench and Maggie Smith, Ladies in Lavender takes place in pre-war England where aging sisters Ursula (Dench) and Janet (Smith) live peacefully in their cottage on the Cornwall coast. One morning fol-lowing a violent storm, the sisters spot from their garden a nearly-drowned man lying on the beach. They nurse him back to health, and dis-cover that he is Polish. Communicating in broken German while they teach him English, they learn his name is Andrea and that he is a particularly gifted violinist. His boat was on its way to Amer-ica, where he is headed to look for a better life. It doesn't take long for them to become attached to Andrea, and they dote on him. Other towns-people, however, have their suspicions, espe-cially when he befriends a Russian woman, Olga, who is vacationing in the area. This is a charming movie with wonderful acting and beautiful cinematography. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times called the film "perfectly sweet and civilized... It's a pleasure to watch Smith and Dench together; their acting is so natural it could be breathing." Please sign up in advance and when possible provide 48 hour notice of can-cellation. See you at the movies!
April 26 2:00—4:00 pm At our meetings we talk about writing, we spend some time writing together on a given topic and we share some of our writing with the group. Tea and cof-fee are provided. Remember to have your score sheets completed and sent in to the club no later than April 21. There will not be a limit on parking on West Gate, Middle Gate and Blanchard. See you there! *******************************************************************************
HOUSE AND GROUNDS Margaret Jeffries, Chair The vanity table has been sold to a club member, and the proceeds added to the house refurbishing fund. The “Governor General’s “ chair is now back in the House, and looking very smart. The bent and battered kitchen exhaust fan is being replaced on April 11. It is hoped the new fan will keep the kitchen cooler this summer and prevent the fridge shutting down due to overheating. The damaged side table in the sunroom is to be refinished. We could use more side tables in the sun room, so if you have suitable extras you would like to donate, please call me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

REMEMBERING PAULINE PATRICIA PETO 1918-2017

We lost Member Emeritus Pauline Peto on Feb. 24, 2017. Her funeral service was held at St. Aidan’s Anglican Church on March 19. Pauline graduated from the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Home Economics in 1939 and Faculty of Education in 1940. Upon graduation she taught sewing in British Columbia and then Winnipeg. She was a UWC member for more than 60 years and certainly valued her association with the club’s activi-ties and the many friendships she made. Her lovely smile will be missed by the Sunroom Group and at the Annual Recognition Tea in June. You may remember reading in a past Bulletin issue about Pauline’s daughter and granddaughter also becoming UWC members.
