McRae Pirate STEM DAY; Searcy High School Art Club’s “Fiery Lion”

McRae’s 2nd graders enjoyed a fun-filled Pirate STEM day exploring the engineering de-sign process through designing pirate boats, sails, and air cannons with the help of math and science specialists from Harding University’s STEM Center, Wilbur D. Mills Co-op, and math/science specialists from within the school district. Pictured are Mrs. Hopper’s stu-dents Ella Marter, Kennedie Behel, and Sophie Webb.

Ahlf Junior High School Literacy NightOver 600 people attended Literacy Night at Ahlf Junior High School. The English teachers emphasized the importance of reading and a reading routine at home. Selected seventh graders participated in a dramatic reading of “Casey at the Bat,” and a group of eighth graders performed a readers’ theater of a scene from the play The Diary of Anne Frank. At the end of the program, all seventh and eighth grade students displayed a project about a book or an author.

Another purpose of the evening was to discuss ways parents can help their children: • Provide a quiet place to read.• Provide a time to read.• Read aloud to your child.• Listen to audio books with your child.• Read the book your child is reading.• Model good reading habits.• Talk about books your child is reading.• Build a home library.• Take your child to the public library.

Carmen Oakes and Ashley Zheng present their projects over playwright William Shakespeare.

Students Cielo Perez and Garrett Pritchett perform a reading during the evening.

Searcy High School EAST Program joined with the nation-wide EAST initiative to hold EAST Night Out. Students invited the public to visit their lab and learn what projects they are currently working on to assist the community this year. EAST student Aaron Cullum guides Searcy High School teacher Catie Holman through a virtual reality tour. The EAST lab is facilitated by Mrs. Kay Carpenter.

UNITY Health

Unity Health kicks off the Unity Kids Program at Deener, Westside, and McRae. The program will focus on edu-cating the children in our local schools to live Health Centered physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually. “We believe that instilling in our children to live healthy lifestyles at a young age will help them develop healthy habits for life. It is very important to empower our chil-dren to think and be Health Centered.”

Arkansas State University nursing students educate McRaekindergartenclasses about good hand washing and preventing the spread of germs.
