2. AutoTake™

2.1 What Does It Do?

AutoTake enables you to take X-rays automatically without having to press a keyboardkey, a mouse button, or footpedal. You set up patient exams just as you have in the past inCDR — select a patient, a dental series, and get ready to start taking X-rays.

With Version 2.5, you select AutoTake from the Xray/Image menu. When AutoTake isactive, CDR uses both a flashing interval and target window color (both user-definable) toshow which frame in the patient exam is active. Just position the sensor and operate the X-ray source — CDR will do the rest by acquiring the X-ray in that target frame anddisplaying the image in a zoom window for quick evaluation.

Figure 1. Main Window with AutoTake

2.2 What Do I Need for AutoTake?

The AutoTake feature is only available on CDR 2000 (USB) systems with CDR softwareVersion 2.5 or higher installed. The firmware in the Remote Module must be version 27(which is part of CDR 2.5) or higher, so you will need to upgrade the firmware in yourRemote Module. (Firmware is a special set of instructions in your Remote Module thathelps CDR software to acquire and display X-rays correctly.) Click on Upgrade CDR2000 Remote from the Windows Start menu and follow the instructions on each screen.

PLEASE NOTE -- Remote modules upgraded to version 27 will not work witholder versions of CDR (2.1 or earlier).

With AutoTake, theactive target framehas distinctive colorand flashingcharacteristics.

When AutoTake isactive, the larger viewwindow reflects thecolor and flashingcharacteristics of thetarget frame.

Page 7: Using New Features in CDR 2.5 Software - Schick by Sirona€¦ · Using New Features in CDR 2.5 Software Schick Technologies, Inc. 30-00 47th Avenue Long Island City, NY 11101 (718)

New Features in CDR 2.5 B1051027 Rev. A 3

You can check both the CDR software version number and the Remote Moduleinformation in the Help About box (Help menu, About CDR selection). Below aresamples of some of the information you should find in that dialog box.

When checking the Remote Module version number, make sure the Remote Module isconnected to both the sensor and the computer. Otherwise, your computer will not be ableto read the Remote Module version number and that information will be missing from theCDR Help About box.

On startup, CDR checks that the system has the right hardware to support AutoTake. If youhave the correct hardware and software for auto-acquisition but are still not able to use theAutoTake feature, perform the following steps:

• Disconnect and reconnect the sensor to the Remote Module.• Disconnect and reconnect the cable from the Remote Module to the computer.• Exit CDR and then start CDR again.

If this does not solve the problem, review the short list in Section 2.3 to ensure othersettings inside CDR are correct.

2.3 What Can I Do if AutoTake is Not Available?

If your system has met all the requirements for AutoTake (Section 2.2), but the AutoTakecommand on the Xray/Image menu appears dimmed (as shown in Figure 2), perform thefollowing checks.

• Make sure you have upgraded your Remote Module.• Make sure you have an exam open.• Make sure the exam has at least one empty target frame available (more if you

intend to acquire several images).• Make sure you are acquiring X-ray images — not video images.• Make sure the calibration file is installed for the currently connected sensor.

(This is a CDR requirement to ensure you always obtain the best digital imagespossible, whether you are using AutoTake or are capturing X-rays manually.)

2.4 How Do I Take X-rays Using AutoTake?

1. Follow your normal routine for patient setup. (You can also find a short summary ofthese steps in the CDR User Guide.) AutoTake will follow the pre-defined sequence inthe series unless you change it using the Order selection in the Series menu.

2. When AutoTake is active, the target frame currently selected will turn flashing green(default setting) indicating that the X-ray image will be acquired in that frame. If thefeature is not active, select it manually from the Xray/Image menu by choosingAutoTake and then Toggle On/Off.

PLEASE NOTE – The target frame may flash red momentarily before turninggreen (default settings). This is a normal condition that indicates the sensor isbeing prepared to take X-rays.

3. When patient setup is complete, activate the X-ray source.

4. When the image is exposed, it appears in a zoom window for easy evaluation (Figure3). If the mini-exam window is active, a smaller version of the main window is alsodisplayed with the captured image and the next flashing target frame shown.

5. To AutoTake the next X-ray, reposition the sensor (if needed) and activate the X-raysource.

6. If you wish to capture the next image in a different target frame, double click on thatframe, reposition the sensor (if necessary), and activate the X-ray source.

Figure 3. Zoom Window with Mini-Exam Window Shown

With AutoTakeactive, the next targetframe in the seriesflashes green.

2.5 Can I Still Acquire Images the Way I Have Before?

Yes! The choice to use AutoTake is always up to you. If you choose to take X-rays withAutoTake turned off, you will still see the mini-exam window in the zoom window, butnone of the target frames will be flashing. This is, in fact, an easy reminder of when youhave AutoTake selected.

2.6 Why Does the Target Frame Flash Red Sometimes?

If you haven’t changed the default colors for AutoTake (green for Go and red for Stop),you might notice that the target frame flashes red momentarily before flashing green. Thisis a normal condition that enables CDR to clear the sensor before the next image isacquired. You might also notice that changing sensors produces a similar indication. If thetarget frame remains entirely red, however, disconnect and then reconnect the cables onboth sides of the Remote Module. If these actions do not turn the target frame to flashinggreen, refer to Section 2.3 for additional information.

2.7 Can I Change the Color and the Interval of the FlashingTarget Frame?

Yes! Click on the Xray/Image menu in the main window and scroll down to AutoTake.Several options are available, including:

• Manually turning AutoTake on or off (Toggle On/Off)• Setting the window color when AutoTake is ready (Set Go Color)• Setting the window color when AutoTake is not ready (Set Stop Color)• Setting the flash interval from 1 to 5 seconds (Set Flash Interval).

Clicking Toggle On/Off starts AutoTake if it isn’t currently active and stops AutoTake ifit is active. When AutoTake is off, images are acquired manually, meaning you must selectthe target frame first (using the keyboard, mouse, or footpedal) before activating the X-raysource.

PLEASE NOTE -- If the Toggle On/Off command is not available, refer toSection 2.3 for information on why this setting may be disabled.

When you change the flashing stop and go colors, you select a new color from theWindows palette. This is the same color palette you see when picking new colors for theHighlight feature in the CDR zoom window. To change the delay interval between eachtime the frame flashes, select the new interval from the Set Flash Interval menu.

2.8 Are there Special Settings for AutoTake?

AutoTake can be set manually during a CDR session, or it can be active each time youstart CDR. If you prefer to have AutoTake active at the beginning of each CDR session,

Page 10: Using New Features in CDR 2.5 Software - Schick by Sirona€¦ · Using New Features in CDR 2.5 Software Schick Technologies, Inc. 30-00 47th Avenue Long Island City, NY 11101 (718)

B1051027 Rev. A New Features in CDR 2.56

there are two locations where you can indicate this setting: (a) in the CDR.INI file or, (b)at CDR Options (in the Windows Control Panel).

(a) CDR.INI. When Init_At_Startup=YES (under the Auto Acquire section),AutoTake is active (by default) each time you start CDR. When AUTO_ACQUIRE=NO,this feature is not enabled when you start CDR, but you can start AutoTake duringCDR by selecting it from the Xray/Image menu.

(b) CDR Options. When the AutoTake checkbox is checked (under the Intra-Oral Xraytab), AutoTake is active (by default) each time you start CDR. When the checkbox isclear, this feature is not enabled when you start CDR, but you can start AutoTakemanually during CDR by selecting it from the Xray/Image menu.

When AutoTake is active, acquired images are accepted automatically, so theAccept/Reject option is not available in this acquisition mode. You may retake an imageby clicking on the Retake button in the toolbar.

When every target frame in an exam is filled with images, AutoTake will not be active.Even if all the target frames were filled by copy and paste operations rather than by actualX-ray acquisitions, CDR requires an empty target frame to AutoTake an image.

3. Automating Microsoft Word Reports

3.1 What Does It Do?

We have expanded our support for Word templates by making it easier for you to fill outthe reports available in CDR. Starting with Version 2.5, patient information, selected X-rayimages, and exam date information will be copied automatically to Word reports. All youneed to do is select the Word template style, choose the images you want, and CDR willgenerate a report complete with all the information you need. Once the report is generated, you can change or add other information if you wish.

3.2 What Information Does CDR Include in the Reports?

CDR will add the following information to your report.

• Patient first and last name• X-ray images (selected by user from current exam)• Dates the images were acquired• Current date

To try out the new feature, follow the short procedure in Section 3.4.

3.3 What Do I Need to Know about Macros and Security?

The task of copying text and images from CDR into Word is accomplished by macros thatwe have included in CDR 2.5. To protect users from viruses that may be spread by macros,Word employs a document protection strategy that is slightly different in Word 97 andWord 2000. (Users with Word 95 should upgrade to one of these later versions of Word toenable the macros in CDR report templates.)

The typical way that Word alerts a user to the potential presence of macro viruses is bydisplaying the following message (shortened here for brevity): “The document you areopening contains macros . . .” To disable this message, perform the step that pertains toyour version of Word.

• Word 97 users should start Word, go to the Tools menu, click on Options, andthen on the General tab. Find the checkbox for “Macro virus protection”, clearthe checkmark, and click OK to close the dialog box.

• Word 2000 users should start Word, go to the Tools menu, click on Macros, and then on Security. To disable the message, but enable the macros, click onLow. To disable the message and disable the macros, click on High. With highsecurity, Word ignores the macros so that neither text nor images areautomatically copied to CDR reports.

Page 12: Using New Features in CDR 2.5 Software - Schick by Sirona€¦ · Using New Features in CDR 2.5 Software Schick Technologies, Inc. 30-00 47th Avenue Long Island City, NY 11101 (718)

B1051027 Rev. A New Features in CDR 2.58

Keep in mind that the above changes in security are intended to expedite the generation ofWord reports via CDR. The level of security you wish Word to maintain for you when youopen documents is entirely up to you.

3.4 How to Prepare Microsoft Word Reports

The following steps describe how to generate a patient report based on one of the templateswe have supplied with your new software. For steps on creating your own automated Wordtemplate, refer to Section 3.5.

1. A. Open an exam in CDR.

B. Choose the images you want toinclude in the report by selectingone image at a time. The order inwhich the images are selecteddetermines where the imagesappear in the report.

2. A. Click on the Print menu, Reports, and then on the particular reportstyle you want to use. (Anendodontic template namedHoriz2b – named after the twohorizontal text boxes set up in thetemplate – was used in thisexample.)

B. Word creates a report based on thetemplate style.

C. As you can see from the report, thepatient’s first name, last name, X-ray images, and the dates that X-rays were acquired have all beenincluded.

3. To print the report, go to Word’s Filemenu and click Print.

4. Since your report was based on atemplate, Word will prompt you to savechanges to the report. (The templateremains unchanged.)

5. You must choose one of the following actions:

A. YES — Word will open the Save dialog box so you can choose to save thereport just as you would any document that you create in Word. Enter a filename and select a location where you want to store the document. When you'redone, click Save, and Word will close the dialog box and will save and closethe report.

B. NO — Word will close the document without saving it. In other words, thereport will be discarded. There are no additional prompts from Word after youclick NO, so be sure you want to do this.

C. CANCEL — Word will close the dialog box but will keep the document open.

4. Tab Format for Patient Exams

4.1 What Does It Do?

Sometimes you open an exam and find that you also want to check other exams for thesame patient. Opening exams in CDR has always been easy — just click the Open buttonon the CDR toolbar or press the CTRL and O shortcut keys on your keyboard. Startingwith Version 2.5, we’ve made accessing all the exams for a patient simpler and easier thanever.

When you open an exam with CDR Version 2.5 and have the new tab format active, atabbed row will appear along the bottom of the CDR main window (Figure 4). Each tabrepresents an exam for that patient, shown from the oldest exam at the left to the mostcurrent one on the right. If there are more exams than can fit along the row at the bottom ofthe screen, two arrow keys located at the lower right enable you to scroll through the tabsuntil you find the exam you want.

4.2 Where Can I Find It?

Start CDR and click on the Open button (or use the shortcut keys) to display the dialogbox with your current list of patients. Select a patient and then click OK to close the dialogbox and display the exams for that patient.

Figure 4. Main Window with Tabbed Exams and Tool Tip Shown

Every tab consists of the following items:

• Exam date• Icon that signifies X-ray, Panoramic, or Video exam (image history does not

have an icon associated with it)• Tool tip (appears when you move the cursor over the tab)

Tool tips also provide some additional summary information, including the name and typeof series, the number of target windows in the exam, and how many of those windowshave images and exam comments in them. When you need to see more than one exam ofthe same patient, using tool tips can help speed up the time it takes for you to locate theexam you want.

Refer to the following table for examples of the exam icons.

4.3 Are there Special Settings for the Exam Tabs?

Displaying exam tabs can be set during a CDR session, or it can be active each time youstart CDR. If you prefer to have exam tabs displayed at the beginning of each CDRsession, there are two locations where you can indicate this setting: (a) in the CDR.INIfile or, (b) at CDR Options (in the Windows Control Panel).

(a) CDR.INI. When DisplayExamTabs=YES, the exam tabs are displayed (bydefault) each time you start CDR. When DisplayExamTabs=NO, this feature is notenabled when you start CDR, but you can display (or hide) exam tabs during CDRfrom the Window menu.

(b) CDR Options. When the Show Exam Tabs checkbox is checked (under theWindows tab), exam tabs are displayed (by default) each time you start CDR. Whenthe checkbox is clear, this feature is not enabled when you start CDR, but you candisplay (or hide) exam tabs during CDR from the Window menu.

5. Importing Images from TWAIN Devices

5.1 What Does It Do?

Beginning with Version 2.5, images acquired by TWAIN devices (scanners, digitalcameras, or other digital sources) can be directly acquired into CDR. This new feature canbe especially helpful for users who want to scan film X-rays into digital format. Once theimages have been scanned, they can be acquired and stored by CDR.

5.2 What are TWAIN Devices?

Although it looks like an acronym, the word “TWAIN” actually has no literal meaning. While attempts to develop a definition for TWAIN have been unsuccessful, TWAIN itselfhas been popularly adopted as the interface standard for scanning devices. Examples ofTWAIN devices include scanners, digital cameras, and camcorders. Dental practiceswishing to import scanned and other TWAIN-acquired images into their patient files willbe able to do so easily from inside CDR.

Once you’ve decided on which TWAIN device you will be using, make sure you followthe manufacturer’s instructions for connecting the device correctly to your computer. Ifyou are using a scanner, be sure that everything you need to operate the scanner (includingthe manufacturer’s scanning software) has been installed.

5.3 How Do I Acquire Images from my TWAIN Device?

1. Make sure your scanner, camera, or other TWAIN device is on and is connectedcorrectly to the computer.

2. Start CDR and open a patient exam.

3. Click on System menu, and then on Select TWAIN Source. Select your TWAINdevice from the list.

4. Click on Xray/Image menu, Acquisition Mode, and then on Scanner.

5. Click on an empty target frame. CDR starts the scanning program that you installedwith the TWAIN device and acquires one image.

PLEASE NOTE – CDR accepts 24-bit color images or 8-bit grayscale imagesonly. As you work with TWAIN images, you will be reminded of this requirementin a message dialog box. If you wish, you can hide this message by checkingthe “Don’t show this message again” on the dialog box or by clearing the “ShowTWAIN Color Warning” checkbox in CDR Options.

6. If you accept and save the image, the next time you open it, the letter “S” will bevisible in one corner of the image. This will indicate that the image was imported froma scanner, digital camera, or other TWAIN device.

5.4 What Kinds of Images Can I Acquire?

Both 24-bit color and 8-bit black & white images can be imported from a TWAIN device. There are no restrictions on the file size of images being read into CDR, but you shouldcheck the product manual supplied with your TWAIN device to see if there are limitationson the scanner side.

5.5 What if I Can’t Acquire Images from my Scanner?

There are several reasons why you may not be able to acquire images using your scanneror other TWAIN device. For CDR to download images from a TWAIN device, you need tobe sure you have the following:

• Make sure your TWAIN device is correctly and securely connected to yourcomputer.

• Make sure your device is TWAIN-compatible. (If you are not sure whetheryour scanner, camera, or other digital device supports TWAIN, check yourproduct manual or look for the TWAIN logo on the packaging that came withyour device.)

• Make sure &SCANNER=CDRTWAIN.DLL is listed in the CDR.INI file. (Tocheck, open the CDR.INI file by clicking Start, Programs, CDR, and then EditCDR.INI. Under the [Modules32] section, check that the following item islisted: &SCANNER=CDRTWAIN.DLL. If the item is not listed, enter it, and thensave and close the CDR.INI file.)

• Make sure CDRTWAIN.DLL is in the CDR/Obj folder. (To check, startWindows Explorer. Locate the CDR/Obj folder on your system and open it. Ifthe DLL is not listed, contact us at (877) SCHICK-Help (724-4254) for furtherassistance.

6. Mini-Exam Window

6.1 What Does It Do?

We feel that taking X-rays and being able to evaluate them from a single location insideCDR is one of the obvious advantages of the mini-exam window. Because of this newdesign, all of the images you acquire in an exam can be seen in mini-size in this window.

In Figure 5 we have placed a portion of the CDR zoom window and CDR’s main windowside-by-side. Looking at the zoom window (on the left), you’ll notice that the mini-examwindow (shown with an arrow) is really just that — a smaller version of the patient exam(on the right). So, what are its advantages?

The idea behind the mini-exam window is to eliminate the extra step of switching back andforth between the CDR main and zoom windows when all you need is a quick review ofthe exam. Refer to Section 6.3 for instructions on how to display and hide the mini-examwindow.

6.2 How Do I Use It?

You can use the mini-exam window to keep track of the images you’ve acquired in thecurrent exam or to change the position of the next image you wish to capture. If you’reusing AutoTake and want to select a different target frame than the one selected, justdouble click on the new target frame and CDR will acquire the image in that position. Ifyou’re acquiring images manually, click once on a new target frame to acquire an image inthat position.

6.3 Are there Special Settings for the Mini-Exam Window?

Displaying the mini-exam window or hiding it can be set during a CDR session, or it canbe active each time you start CDR. If you prefer to have the mini-exam window displayedat the beginning of each CDR session, there are two locations where you can indicate thissetting: (a) in the CDR.INI file or, (b) at CDR Options (in the Windows Control Panel).

(a) CDR.INI. When DisplayZoomExam=YES in the CDR.INI file, the mini-examwindow is active (by default) each time you start CDR. When DisplayZoomExam=NO, this feature is not enabled when you start CDR, but you can display (or hide) themini-exam window during CDR from the zoom Window menu.

(b) CDR Options. When the Show Mini Exam checkbox is checked (under theWindows tab), the mini-exam window is displayed (by default) each time you startCDR. When the checkbox is clear, this feature is not enabled when you start CDR, butyou can display (or hide) the mini-exam window during CDR from the zoom Windowmenu.

6.4 Can I Use the Mini-Exam Window for Other Functions?

Yes! The mini-exam window is especially helpful for auto-acquisition, but it can be usedfor other tasks as well. You may recall that whenever you select a target frame at the mainwindow and click the right mouse button, CDR displays a short list of menu options.Performing the same step at the mini-exam window displays a similar menu of options.

If you right-click on a target frame with an image inside it, these options are available:

• Acquisition mode, Delete, Copy, and Select All

If you right-click on an empty target frame, these options are available:

• Acquisition mode, Paste (available when an image is copied), Resize View, andSelect All

For more information on any of the options listed above, refer to your CDR User Guide. Also, keep in mind that some commands are only available in CDR’s main window.Features like import and export, swap, open image history, and flip are only active in thatwindow.

7. Other Enhancements

7.1 Emboss

CDR has added a new enhancement feature to the set of tools already available in the zoomwindow. You can find the Emboss feature by clicking on the Enhance menu.

Emboss changes the appearance of an image by tracing the edges in an image anddistinguishing between foreground and background layers. Emboss raises the foregroundlayer, giving the image a three-dimensional look. Emboss can be applied several times toan image, but you will probably find that applying it once or twice to an image issufficient. Emboss can be applied only to X-ray images. To remove the embossing effecton an image, click Undo from the Edit menu.

Refer to the following pictures for an example of using the Emboss feature.

7.2 Searching by Comments

NOTE: To benefit from exam comment searches, you must first rebuild yourpatient database after installing CDR 2.5. Click File, File Maintenance, and thenRebuild Database.

Searching for exam information in CDR is a common task and easy to do. Whenever youopen a patient exam, a complete listing of patients is shown in a dialog box. To find aparticular exam, you can use any of the searchable fields (name, patient ID number, andexam search dates) on the dialog box.

In Version 2.5, the Comments box (Figure 7) has been added to the group of searchablefields. The Comments field is an effective tool for retrieving specific information that youhave added to the exams yourself. By entering key words and phrases that are meaningfulto you, searching and retrieving exams can be faster and easier.

Consider the following example. In your dental practice, let’s assume you recommendedorthodontic consultations for some of your patients. Whenever you made thisdetermination, you clicked on Exam Comments from the Edit menu and added “orthoreferral” in the text box. Starting in CDR 2.5, you could retrieve a list of patients with thecomment “ortho referral” by performing the following steps. Open Patient Examinations, click on the Show all exams checkbox, click on the Search button, and in the Commentsfield enter the comment (ortho referral in this example). Immediately, a list of all examswith comments that match the search field would appear (Figure 8).

7.3 New Changes in Grid Series

The Grid Series is one of the pre-defined series templates provided with CDR. The seriescan be especially useful for dentists who wish to take several exposures of a specific areain the mouth. Endodontists, especially, may find that a grid series provides the toothcoverage needed for many endodontic cases.

In Version 2.5, users can specify the direction of the target frames. Selecting a New GridSeries from the Series menu displays a familiar dialog box with the following changes.Under the horizontal and vertical directions are two drop-down list boxes that allow you tochoose the type of target frame.

7.4 Improved Contrast and Brightness of Video Images

Whenever you wish to adjust the brightness and contrast of video images, you use thesliders in the zoom window, just as you would for X-ray images. If you work with videoimages frequently, you may have noticed unequal changes in color when you increase ordecrease contrast and brightness. Starting with Version 2.5, we have improved the way thatcontrast and brightness affect video images. The result is a video image that remains truerto the original, with a minimum of color distortion.

7.5 New Toolbar Buttons

New toolbar buttons have been added in this version of CDR. Both buttons can be found inthe CDR main window and are described in the following table.

Large Button Small Button Function

Clicking this button creates a mail package thatincludes all the X-rays you selected from the currentexam. Once CDR creates the package, use the mailwindow displayed by your e-mail service to addressand send the exam. (Refer to our document on usingCDR mail, Schick Part Number B1051017, for moreinformation.)

Clicking this button displays all the images in thecurrent exam at one easier-to-see size. Extras hiddenby this feature include exam information, the statusbar, and the toolbar. To show the extras again, go tothe Window menu, click on Hide Elements, andthen on Hide All Extras. You might also notice thatthis action clears the checkmark next to the menuitem.

7.6 Selecting All the Images in an Exam

To expedite the task of moving all the images from an exam to a report, Version 2.5 hasimplemented a new command that selects all the images at once. To use this command, open a patient exam and click on Edit and then Select All to select all the images.

Using the Select All command highlights all the target frames in the exam. To de-selectthe group, click on any target frame.

Sending mail from CDR is also easier using this command. When you use the Select Allcommand (CTRL and A keys) and select either the Send to or Send to Mail Recipientmenu item (depending on your system setup), CDR creates a mail package that includes allthe images in the exam. If there are any blank target frames, CDR will ignore them.
