Attendance Roster found under “Contacts” after minutes CPO Update: RADM Pamela Schweitzer

1. Recent Meetings: a. AMSUS: Just concluded in Washington DC with efforts led by LCDR Linzi Allen. Great pharmacy program

and opportunity to learn about activities within various Agencies and current topics. b. ASHP: Federal Forum in Orlando this past week. IHS had large presence representing the pharmacy

residency program. Estimated that over 50 Officers in attendance with many representing posters or presenting on cutting edge topics impacting the nation.

2. Social Media: Hit landmark followers this month on Twitter. Messages distributed are of public health importance to the public and have followers within the pharmacy community and all over the nation.

3. Deployments: Short questionnaire will be distributed to Officers deployed for the various missions (Hurricane Harvey, Irma, and Maria) to collect information on personal experience or tips for deploying.

4. Culture Change in the Corp: a. Each Officer must take responsibility and be timely with all the items we agreed to as a Commissioned

b. PharmPAC will be continually pushing information about new initiatives coming in the future including Basic Readiness tracking.

c. Challenges in the past have been addressed and expectations are higher now, 100% compliance is expected. Many of the conditions of service may be tied together and impact items such as the upcoming revisions to special pay or involve punitive penalties for not meeting requirements.

d. Encourage Officers to take charge and not wait until the last minute. Senior Officers should be willing to help junior Officers and inform appropriate parties of any barriers to completing tasks.

e. No matter the circumstance, always give 100%, never give up! This is especially relevant when individuals may be going into a promotion cycle feeling unqualified or unprepared. Each of us is an Officer until retirement and should not let up on our efforts.

5. Special Pay: a. Package proposed and being circulated for approvals. Nothing has been finalized or signed off. b. Expectation is that all BCPS certifications, including Ambulatory Care Pharmacy will be included. Most

likely these changes to compensation will not be retroactive.

Mentor/Mentee pairs focus on tools for growth, beginning with concepts presented in Leadership and Self-Deception, via four one-on-one mentorship sessions. Objectives:

• Create a dialogue between junior and senior officers in the pharmacy category to establish a foundation for future mentoring and coaching

• Connect officers with resources to continue their involvement with Commissioned Corps activities and initiatives • Facilitate officers’ ongoing development of leadership skills and competencies

Readiness Checked quarterly, maintaining basic readiness is a requirement of service for USPHS officers. See “Readiness Down to Basics”. If you believe an error was made, then you must submit a formal request for assistance by submitting a “Readiness Assistance Form”(found in the secure area of CCMIS under “RedDOG Forms”). Once completed, send it, and supporting documentation (e.g. fax confirmations) to [email protected]. Concerns are adjudicated case-by-case.

Recruitment PharmPAC strives to have its officers, mainly via the University Point of Contact (UPOC) program make regular contact, to include recruitment events, with universities across the country. PharmPAC has taken steps to assist other categories (especially Dental) in recruitment efforts. Interested officers should contact the Activity Lead for the UPOC Program. A number of resources are available for recruitment events. The major source of information should always be the USPHS website (www.USPHS.gov), especially under “Careers & Benefits”. There is a recruitment phone number on the

page (1.800.279.1605) and an e-mail for physicians, dentists, and JRCOSTEPS to get more information: [email protected]. There is also a short USPHS informational video created in 2016. Pharmacy-specific materials HERE (https://dcp.psc.gov/OSG/pharmacy/sc_recruit.aspx). The major handout we recommend is “Pharmacist Leading the Way”, which used to be called “Pharmacy’s Best Kept Secret” (or “PBKS”). You can direct students to their school’s UPOC, which may be found on the UPOC roster. Presentations are also available. The Vacancy List is distributed monthly to UPOCs and those subscribed to the [email protected] listserv, which can drive the conversation on where USPHS pharmacist jobs are currently available. However, it is important to know that not all positions listed will be available for new Call to Active Duty pharmacists. Brainstorming and recruitment document updating occurs on MAX, and we could always use practical input to keep the materials fresh. If you are interested in assisting development of physical recruitment materials, then please consider joining the Recruitment Materials Project. You may also wish to bring business cards, pharmacy challenge coins, photo release forms, and a camera (send pics to Social Media!).

Social Media

Hashtags*: #USPHS #USPHSPharmacy #USPHSAthletics *Use whenever appropriate in your own personal social media posts/tweets!

Have a suggested Social Media Post for us? Please send to [email protected]

Include: Your rank, first and last name, e-mail, telephone number, what you want to post (photos are great!), which channels you wish to post on, and when you want it posted. You will need a signed photo release to post a picture of

anyone not a federal government employee.

Websites Your primary source of USPHS information should be CCMIS, as it has links to the areas necessary to place leave requests, update your electronic officer personnel file (eOPF), update readiness items, and much, much more! New Height and Weight Standards page developed August 2017, with an FAQ too. Other useful websites for USPHS information includes PharmPAC, JOAG, RedDOG, and more (check out CCMIS). The PharmPAC site is maintained by the PharmPAC with the help of the PharmPAC IT Workgroup. If you notice any errors, problems, or have an idea you wish to share in regards to the PharmPAC’s website, please e-mail the PharmPAC IT Workgroup. A useful site to share with non-USPHS people is the USPHS.GOV site since it is geared towards recruitment. Self Service Sites:

Recruitment Materials Project (LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!) This group will attempt to collate current recruitment materials (posters, table decorations, etc.), design new materials (if deemed useful), and disseminate a directory of this information to the UPOCs and Category as a whole. The goal is to have cross-category “job fair ready” materials housed at local facilities and/or within local COA branches to enable officers participating in recruitment events easier access to high quality, impactful materials, while reducing individual officer costs (and being environmentally responsible). The listed positions are TENTATIVE and will be changed based on the actual course of the project as it develops, in conjunction with the cross-category recruitment group.
