णमो लोए सव साहूणं

एसो पंच णमोयारो, सव पावपणासणो

मंगलाणं च सवेस,ं पढमं हवइ मंगलं

While reciting the Navkar Mantra, we are bowing down with respect Arihantas, Siddhas, Acharya(heads of sadhus and sadhvis), Upadhyaya (those who teach scriptures to sadhus and sadhvis), Sadhus (monks, who have voluntarily given up social, economical and family relationships) and Sadhvis (nuns, who have voluntarily given up social, economical and family relationships). Collectively, they are called Panch Parmesthi (five supreme spiritual people). In this mantra we worship their virtues rather than worshipping any one particular person or Tirthankara. This mantra is also called Namaskar or Namokar Mantra as we are bowing down. ARIHANTAS - The word Arihanta is made up of two words: Ari, meaning enemies, and Hanta, meaning destroyer of the enemies. These enemies are inner desires known as passions such as anger, ego, deception, and greed within us. When a person (soul)

wins over these inner enemies he/she is called Arihanta. Arihanta destroys the four ghati karmas namely Gnanavarniya (knowledge blocking) Karma, Darshanavarniya (perception blocking) Karma, Mohniya (passion causing) Karma and Antaraya (obstacle causing) Karma. Arihanta attains: Kevalgnyan, perfect knowledge due to the destruction of all Jnanavarniya Karmas, Kevaldarshan, perfect perception due to the destruction of all Darshanavarniya karmas, becomes passionless due to the destruction of all Mohniya Karmas, and gains infinite power due to the destruction of all Antaraya Karmas. SIDDHAS - Siddhas are the liberated souls. They are no longer among us because they have completely ended the cycle of birth and death. They have reached the ultimate highest state, salvation. They do not have any karmas, and they do not collect any new karmas. This state of true freedom is called Moksha. ACHARYAS - Acharyas carry the message of Jina. They are our spiritual leaders. Acharyas must have to do in-depth study and achieve mastery of the Jain scriptures (Ägams). In addition to acquiring a high level of spiritual excellence, they have the ability to lead the monks and nuns. They know various languages with a sound knowledge of other philosophies and religions of the area and the world. UPADHYAYAS - The title Upadhyayas is given to those Sadhus who have acquired a special knowledge of the Ägams and philosophical systems. They teach Jain scriptures to sadhus and sadhvis. SADHUS AND SADHVIS - When householders become detached from the worldly aspects of life and get the desire for spiritual uplift (and not worldly uplift), they give up their worldly lives and become sadhus (monk) or sadhvis (nun). A male person is called sadhu, and a female person is called sadhvi. At the time of Deeksha, the sadhu or sadhvi voluntarily accepts to obey following five major vows for the rest of his/her life: 1. Commitment of Total Ahimsa (non-violence)-not to commit any type of violence. 2. Commitment of Total Satya (truth)-not to indulge in any type of lie or falsehood. 3. Commitment of Total Asteya (non-stealing)-not to take anything unless it is given. 4. Commitment of Total Brahmacharya (celibacy)-not to indulge in any sensual activities 5. Commitment of Total Aparigraha (non-possessiveness)-not to acquire more than what is needed to maintain day to day life.

Page 5: UTHNYNG 4th Issue

PANCH MAHAVRATAS

1. Ahimsa: “non violence in all parts of a person

— mental, verbal and physical.” Committing an act of violence against a human, animal, or even a vegetable generates negative karma which in turn adversely affects one’s next life.

2. Satya: speaking truth; avoiding falsehood 3. Asteya: to not steal from others 4. Brahma-charya: (soul conduct); remaining

sexually monogamous to one’s spouse only 5. Aparigraha: detach from people, places and

material things. Avoiding the collection of excessive material possessions, abstaining from over-indulgence, restricting one’s needs, etc.

Alongwith five Mahavratas Jainism also Stresses on 10 Supreme Virtue of Souls. These Virtues are as follows: Dharma, Seva, Kshanti, Mridutvmrijuta, ch Shotmath, Satyam Akinchanyam, Brahm, tyagshch, tapashch, sanyamshcheti’ 1. Uttama Kshama - Supreme Forgiveness (To observe tolerance whole-heartedly, shunning anger.)

2. Mardava - Tenderness or Humility (To observe the virtue of humility subduing vanity and passions.) 3. Arjaya - Straight-forwardness or Honesty (To practice a deceit-free conduct in life by vanquishing the passion of deception.) 4. Shaucha - Contentment or Purity (To keep the body, mind and speech pure by discarding greed.) 5. Satya - Truthfulness (To speak affectionate and just words with a holy intention causing no injury to living being.) 6. Sanyam - Self-restraint (To defend all living beings with utmost power in a cosmopolitan spirit abstaining from all the pleasures provided by the five senses – touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing; and the sixth – mind.) 7. Tapa - Penance or Austerities (To practice austerities putting a check on all worldly allurements.) 8. Tyaga - Renunciation (To give four fold charities – Ahara (food), Abhaya (fearlessness), Aushadha (medicine), and Shastra Dana (distribution of Holy Scriptures), and to patronize social and religious institutions for self and other uplifts.) 9. Akinchanya - Non-attachment (To enhance faith in the real self as against non-self i.e., material objects; and to discard internal Parigraha viz. anger and pride; and external Parigraha viz. accumulation of gold, diamonds, and royal treasures.) 10. Brahmacarya - Chastity or celibacy (To observe the great vow of celibacy; to have devotion for the inner soul and the omniscient Lord; to discard the carnal desires, vulgar fashions, child and old-age marriages, dowry dominated marriages, polygamy, criminal assault on ladies, use of foul and vulgar language.)

Simple Exam Preparation Tips for preparation for CA exams. Well many people ask me of tips on How to clear these exams. Is there any secret tip in clearing this? Let me tell you if you follow these very easy and lucid steps you would surely do wonders in your exams. 1. The most important thing in clearing CA exams is, believing yourself that yes, I can do so. There is no point in having negative thoughts in mind that CA exams are very tough or for that matter that passing percentage is very low. Even if you have failed in earlier attempt or you did not had a great academic record you can still clear it. Have faith in yourself! Remember every attempt is fresh start. A new innings! Visualize yourself that you already have become CA. Let me tell you it will have a very powerful impact as what can be conceived in mind can be achieved. 2. Now give yourself enough time for studies and revision. Understand this is a professional course so you can only succeed if you adopt professional approach. Last minute preparation or mugging up wont work here. 3. Most of students get confused whether to give both the groups or one group at a time. No point in discussing with friends or taking advice from others. Remember you and you only are the best judge. You are fully aware of your strengths and weakness. If you can cope up both groups at a time, excellent otherwise even one group is fine. 4. Remember Quality of time spent on studying is more important and not the amount of hours spend on studying! When you are studying, have complete focus on the subject only and not elsewhere. 5. Make proper time table for your studies on daily basis and review it regularly to ensure that you are sticking to the schedule and not lagging behind. Ensure that you maintain buffer in case of any emergencies. Say you have two months for exams, so around 60 days. Take it a day at a time. As they say in Test cricket take it one session at time. 6. Give yourself proper breaks during studying. This would keep you physically and mentally fresh. Ideally studying early mornings is great as

our mind is fresh and one can retain a lot of what one studies. I advise students can study in gardens or in open spaces probably in terraces or balconies so that they can enjoy the early morning sunshine, fresh air along with their studies. One can take short nap in afternoon after lunch to rejuvenate themselves for the next session. 7. Also it is most important to maintain a proper balance as it goes that all study and no play makes Jack a dull boy. I have seen students who lock themselves in their rooms for days and days. Remaining aloof won't help. From time to time go out and meet your friends or relatives. Play with your pets. Spend some time in what you love doing. This would be great stress buster and you would feel great. 8. If possible do mediation, breathing exercises, chanting and yoga. These have profound impact on our mind and help us to maintain focus and improve our concentration. 9. Allocate your day in such a manner that you can work on 2 - 3 subjects in a day. Ensure that there is good mix of theory and practical topics. Say Audit with Financial Management, Indirect Taxation with Accounts. This would not result in boredom. 10. There would always be some topics or subject that you find it difficult or you dont like it so always study first those. 11. Ensure you go thru all the relevant compilations, amendments notifications, Revision Test papers etc given from the institute. These are very useful. 12. In exams days dont unnecessarily stress out yourself Take adequate rest. Also eat nutritious food and fruits. These would keep you alert and fresh. Avoid spicy, oily and junk food.

13. One last thing treat this exams just like another exams you had given in your school and college and this would make it lot easier for you to deal this. Also remember one thing. Once you are thorough with your first paper, please dont discuss with your friends. Most of the time, we waste precious moments in discussing our papers. What is done cannot be undone. Study for the next paper. Give your Best Shot and 100% effort and trust God. You would come out with flying colors. ALL THE BEST

PEACOCK FEATHER EARRINGS

Select two peacock feathers from the bunch. The colorful wide portion of the feather is the bottom. The stem with its branches of slender feathers is the top.

1. About halfway down from the top of the feather, place a fold over crimp underneath the stem of the feather. Make sure the ring on the top of the fold over crimp points towards the top of the feather stem (or upwards).

2. Using flat nose pliers, close each side of the fold over crimp tightly over the feather's stem . There should be a small space at the corner of the crimp end large enough for the 26 gauge round wire to fit through

it. The back of stem of the peacock feather is shaped like a triangle so the crimp end may not fold exactly flat. This is okay, but just be sure the fold over crimp end is secure.

3. Using wire cutters, cut off the top of the feather just above the crimp.

4. Using wire cutters, cut two six inch (15.2 cm) lengths of 26 gauge round half hard wire. (Not pictured) Slide one end of one 6 inch (15.2 cm) length of wire up through the small space at the corner of the fold over crimp

and the feather's stem. Allow about a 1/8 inch (or about 5 mm) length of wire to protrude above the top of the fold over crimp. Use your index finger or flat nose pliers to bend the protruding wire over the back edge of the fold over crimp.

5. On the free end of the wire, thread enough 11/0 seed beads to take up a couple of inches of space. Slide the seed beads down the wire to rest at the

base of the wire where it exits the fold over crimp. 6. Now you will snugly wrap the wire with beads around the stem of the feather. Using your index finger and thumb of one hand, grasp the wire at the point where the seed beads end. Hold

them snugly into place against one another and the base of the wire. Using your index finger and thumb of your other hand, firmly grasp the entire fold over crimp. Now, beginning at the base of the fold over

crimp, wrap the wire of beads around the stem of the feather. As you wrap the wire you may need to bring your fingers down to hold the top couple of wraps. Make a few or several wraps around the stem of the feather adding more seed beads if necessary. Make a few wraps of bare wire around the feather stem to secure the beads.

7. Using wire cutters, trim any excess wire. Using flat nose pliers, tuck the wire end in close the feather stem.

8. Using flat nose pliers, open an earwire and attach it to the

ring on top of the fold over crimp. Use the pliers to close the loop of the earwire. Use the pliers to tuck the protruding wire at the top of the fold over crimp in snuggly against the crimp.

9. Repeat Steps 1 through 8 to make a second earring.

• PEACOCK FEATHER ECKLACE

Supplies: 5 peacock eye feathers Scissors Paper Pencil Glue Gun

Stiff Felt (the kind you buy by the square)Needle Thread that matches felt Old chain necklace (if you don’t have an old chain necklace you can purchase new chain and findings in most craft stores)

1. Take three of your

peacock feathers and trim

the wispy eyelash like ends

off of the rounded top and

cut off the stem just below

the “eye” (see fig. 1).

2. Arrange the feathers

similar to fig. 2a on top of

the piece of paper. Carefully

trace around the feathers.

When you remove the

feathers place them to the

side in the exact order you had them on your

paper pattern.

3. Take the pencil and

draw a line inside the

current outline that follows

the shape of the original

outline. Your new “inside”

pattern should be about an

eighth of an inch (give or take) from the

original “outside” line. Cut out the “inside”

pattern shape.

4. Use the cut out

paper pattern to cut out the

felt backing. Place feathers

on top of the felt to make

sure that you can’t see any of the felt when

the feathers are in position.

Trim the felt if necessary.

5. Take the chain and

place the middle center

aligned with the top center of

the felt (see fig.5a). Sew the

chain in place. Next take the

chain and move one side to the

left top corner and sew in place,

repeat with right side (fig. 5b).

6. With your trimmed feathers close by,

take the glue gun and put a thin layer on the

left side.* When the area is covered pick up

the left hand side feather and carefully place

it on the glued area. If the placement is not

perfect DO NOT WORRY, that is why we

have the other two feathers that we haven’t

touched yet sitting on the side.

*NOTE: It is very important that the glue does

not have any thick beads, to help avoid this

make sure your glue gun is very hot and take

the tip and place it right up against the felt

and move it around

the area.

7. Repeat step

6 with the right and

center feathers.

NOTE: Because

hot glue is unforgiving and you can’t move

the feathers around after they have touched

the glue, you might notice small gaps where

you can see the felt. Dont worry the next step

will cover these littlegaps.

8. Trim the two

remaining feathers

similar to the others,

except you will be

cropping closer to

the eye, see fig. 8

for a reference.

9. On the back side of

the trimmed feathers,

put a bead of glue along

the stem (fig. 9a) then

MICROSOFT SURFACE FINALLY ARRIVES

Though Surface

is clearly a tablet

device, Sinofsky

pointed out that

the process of

developing

Windows 8 (on

which Surface's

Windows RT

operating system

is based) started in the summer of 2009, when there was

no Apple iPad as a reference point (though it remains

unclear if Microsoft began working on its tablet at that

time).

Sinofsky also seemed, at times, almost unwilling to truly

define the Surface as a tablet: "I've used a lot of tablets

and this is not a tablet, but this is the best tablet I've ever

used. And I've used a lot of laptops and notebooks, but

this is not a laptop or notebook, but it's the best laptop or

notebook I've ever used."

Sinofsky did also, of course, describe the Surface as a

touch-first tablet device, but also emphasized its utility and

productivity. In fact, the desire to make the Surface a truly

productive tablet drove many of Microsoft's design

decisions.

It is, at 10.6 inches for instance, larger than both the iPad

and many of the 10.1 tablets on the market today. And 9.7

inches and even 10.1 inches weren't large enough to

accommodate the multi-tasking and the larger, more

comfortable Touch Cover typing experience Sinofsky and

Panay desired, so they settled on the larger 10.6-inch,

1366×768 display.

Of course, a larger screen means more power

consumption and the need for a bigger battery. Sinofsky

explained that "you're in this loop" of ever increasing

screen size, more battery to support it and, naturally, more

weight.

This reality forced Microsoft to come up with its own

magnesium chassis, highly compressed touch-stack for

the screen, and a host of other patents and innovations to

hit 1.5 pounds with all-day battery life, while not turning the

Surface into a heavy, bulky device.

From what we saw, Microsoft may have succeeded.

However the true test starts today as consumers place

their orders and then, 10 days from now, when customers

get their hands on the new Surface tablet. Can it stand tall

among the iPads, Kindle Fires and Google Nexuses of the

world? Only time -- and some critical reviews -- will tell.

Are you getting ready to buy Microsoft's tablet? Let us

know in the comments.

The Microsoft Surface tablet picture has abruptly come into

focus. Tuesday morning this Redmond giant filled in the

blanks on the new tablet's pricing, availability and specs.

Starting today at 9 a.m. PT, consumers can preorder

“How do I save money when I am struggling to

make ends meet?”

With a constant surge in the cost of living, people are finding it more and more difficult to live within their means. Our incomes are barely sufficient to provide for our expenses and saving money is the last thing people can think of. The commonly asked question in such a scenario is Here are some tips which can be followed to control our expenditure. One cannot expect to save money immediately one starts following them, but these simple steps can certainly help in curtailing one’s outflows.

1. Give yourself a budget The word “budget” can send shivers down your spine, but let us ensure you that it isn’t as scary as it sounds. It simply means to give yourself a benchmark

figure so that you can monitor whether you can stay within the limits. For e.g. If one currently requires Rs. 30,000 to run the household, he/she should ensure that they withdraw only the required amount and not more than that. Once we have only the stipulated amount of Rs. 30000, we can then slot it into various categories such as grocery, fuel, medical expenses etc. Having excess liquid cash at one’s disposal doesn’t always work to their advantage. It gives one the message that they can spend more than what they actually need to. 2. Itemize your expenses Most of the expenses of a household are due at the start of the month for eg. Grocery, Society maintenance and so on. The trick is to note down each and every item of expenditure so that you don’t lose track of what you’ve spent. You can either maintain a notebook or an excel sheet depending upon your convenience. At the end of the month, when you see your expense list in black and white, that’s when you realize how well you’ve done through the month. You might have spent far less than what you provided for or you might have exceeded your

monthly budget. But this will give you an idea and a reminder to do better in the following months. 3. “If you buy things you do not need, soon you

will have to sell things you need” Warren Buffet With the nature of products available in the markets and the ever-increasing number of shopping malls, one needs the strength of elephants to say NO to their wants. Before purchasing any product, always ask yourself one question “Is this a need or a desire? Most of our so-called needs turn out to be stuff which we don’t need at all. At the moment of purchase, they seem like commodities we cannot live without and we convince ourselves to buy them. But when it actually comes to using it, half of the people don’t know why they bought so much stuff and the other half don’t know where all the stuff has gone. For eg. Clothes and accessories- the more we have of them, the less we feel contended. Ask yourself whether you visualize wearing this often or you can do without buying it.

4. Keep your credit card

out of reach of yourself This may sound like a funny disclaimer but it actually works. The amount of cash we carry when we go

shopping can be limited, but we also carry with us some plastic cards which are free to carry but are really expensive when used. The limits on these cards are thousands and sometimes even lakhs of rupees. People, many-a-times swipe their cards for stuff they probably don’t need and are in a fix when the bills arrive. Credit/ Debit cards are not always dangerous. Sometimes urgent medical or other unforeseen expenses can be met with, with the help of these cards. But when they entice you into spending money, that’s when you need to lock them up in the cupboard. Credit Card companies offer cards and high limits on them because it is their job to ensure that you spend money, so that they can retain their jobs. But remember that, the person paying these bills is none other than you yourself. The interest charged on outstanding payments is a whopping 36% p.a. which is added to the bill on non-payment. If you already are in such a situation, we would advise you to settle this as soon as possible.

Page 17: UTHNYNG 4th Issue

5. Monitor Yourself At the end of every month compare your expectation with reality. At first, it may seem depressing but as the months go by and you see results in the form of surplus money, you will thank yourself in the long run. The money thus saved can go into something more productive in the future. Always remember, curbing a lavish lifestyle may seem difficult but not having one is worse. So the next time you go shopping you know what to do. The writer is Head Admin Team at MSVentures Financial Planners.

REVERSE MORTGAGE FOR SENIOR CITIZEN

Explaining the concept of reverse mortgage,

Pankaj Mathpal of Optima Money Managers told

CNBC-TV18, "For the senior citizens who do not

have a source of income, they can mortgage their property and can get regular payments."

Below is the verbatim transcript of the interview

Q: Can you explain the concept of reverse

mortgage since it is only vaguely understood?

A: Reverse mortgage is opposite of a home loan.

In home loan you borrow money and then repay it

in the form of EMIs. In case of reverse mortgage,

the lender pays you regular money on particular

intervals. So, basically for the senior citizens who

do not have a source of income, they can mortgage

their property and can get regular payments.

Q: How does it end? Suppose the borrower

were to die or were to live longer than the value

of the house?

A: The borrower can live in that house throughout

his life. After the death of borrower, the legal heir

of the borrower will be given an opportunity to

repay the loan along with interest to the bank. The

lender will give the claim of the property to the

beneficiary. But in case the borrower’s legal heir

cannot repay the loan amount, in such case the

lender will cease the property and sell it to recover the outstanding balance.

After adjusting the outstanding balance whatever is

left, that will be paid to the borrower’s legal heir or

beneficiaries. So, the borrower will live throughout

his life in the same house. There are two choices -

one is the fixed term of 15-20 years. During that

period borrower will receive the periodical money.

After that he can live throughout his life, but he

will not get the money. Second is the reverse

mortgage enabled annuity plans. In such plans, the

borrower will get the money throughout his life without any fixed term.

Q: Does a person's age affect the amount of

annuity paid for the reverse mortgage? Exactly

how is the value and interest rate calculated?

A: The minimum age of eligibility for reverse

mortgage is 60 years. His mother is 65 years old.

So, definitely she is eligible for this reverse

mortgage loan. Value of loan is determined by the

factors like age of the borrower, property’s value

and rate of interest applicable at the time of

borrowing. So, based on these factors value of loan

will be determined and accordingly annuity will be paid.

QUEEN OF DANDIYA: FALGUNI PATHAK

If Falguni had not been a singer, she wouldn’t

know what she would be. From the age of four,

the ‘Dandiya Queen’ has known only this

profession, which is also her passion, excerpts

from interview by Priyal Dave

For a person who charges a couple of crores for nine nights of the ongoing Navratri festival, Falguni Pathak’s patient and simple demeanor even under the onslaught of a media horde hungry for details is quite intriguing. What keeps her grounded, despite being regarded as the brand ambassador of the festival?

Ten minutes into. It is all because she loves singing so much, and is completely dedicated to the practice of her art. For it she can do anything, bear anything, even hours of answering questions thrown at her in a never-ending stream, most of them deadly dull and repetitive. And

then, despite an hour of answering the same old questions, upon request Falguni breaks into a folk song, with a devotion that will curl a listener’s toes with delight immediately.

Almost an hour late for the meeting with journalists, both print and media, scheduled at the Goregaon Sports Club a day prior to the start of the festival, Falguni is dressecd in grey trousers and a blue T-shirt, with her trademark black waist coat. She knows it could be awkward for she is late after all, but she looks perfectly tranquil and acknowledges each person individually, before relaxing into the atmosphere and greeting known faces with an embrace.

Catching up with the ADC, in a short break during the continuous stage

rehearsal, Falguni shares, “I don’t know

what I would be if I was not a singer and

performer. Since the age of four, that is the only profession that I am passionate about.”

Her claim is further corroborated when she throws light on what keeps her occupied through the rest of the year. “I love to travel,” she says, after quite a long pause, during which she looks up at the ceiling, trying hard to recall any other activity that comes to her mind. “I travel a lot. I have been to the US, twelve times for shows, to the UK, Middle East, South Africa, East Asia,” she says, sharing instantly that all of it was for different music concerts.

Falguni, meaning ‘beautiful’, has a marked dressing style which is boyish, making her instantly recognisable wherever she goes. Also boyish is the way she flicks her hair back every ten minutes, especially while she is speaking. A shy person, except when she is with her own group of people, Falguni is also good at keeping secrets. Despite being coaxed repeatedly to share what designer outfit she is going to wear for Navratri, the lady ducks the question, insisting that it is a surprise and the media will have to wait for it to be revealed to everyone.

Mumbai continues to be her favourite city despite seeing other parts of the world, some of which dazzle more than this city. “I love Mumbai,” she says with a sparkle in her eyes that reflects her thinking. Not that this is surprising, since she was born here.

“There were some reasons why I couldn’t be in Mumbai for the Navratri festival last year, but now that I am back, I promise to surprise Mumbai, just like the way I did previously,” responds the singer, each time she is asked by the media why she gave Maximum City a miss in 2010.

While several popular folk songs like ‘Kesario Rang’ are planned for the audience this Navratri, her current favourite is ‘Sadi Gali’ from the film ‘Tanu Weds Manu’. During rehearsals, she hums ‘Kahi Toh’ from the film ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’. While practicing, Falguni shares her idea of what will sound good on the keyboards with one of her team members, and what is striking is the completel camaraderie that is displayed. There is

Page 19: UTHNYNG 4th Issue

none of the “I’m the Star” airs that she could easily have adopted. That is what adds to her charm, which remains with her at all times, in the form of a continuous smile on her face.

Every time Falguni sings, her face reflects peace. Despite tired of singing small portions of different songs for the media, she, breaks into a song with a smile, on each request. However, that smile vanishes immediately, if the request is for a dance step. “I can’t dance on the stage alone (and without the audience),” the singer protests, when news channels repeatedly request her to teach ‘them’ a few Dandiya steps. Music gives her comfort and that she shares again and again.

Falguni’s parents wanted her to be a chartered accountant, but that was not enough to dissuade the otherwise obliging lady to buckle under their expectations.

Today, her determination is what has titled her ‘Dandiya Queen’, and she confirms that there is no other title that she is so famously known for or loves.

The respect that a talented woman can command from the opposite sex is marvelously displayed when an-all- male team of shutter bugs surround the ace singer as she seats herself near a shiny blue drum set on the stage, to pose. While doing so, Falguni does exactly as instructed by the photographers - looks to the side, looks up, pretends to play drums etc. But when she takes over the practice session, the entire crew awaits her directions, and everybody else, including the media gapes at the performer with awe and inspiration.

As for Falguni, she appears to be at ease with the practice session, and more relaxed with the media gone as the evening sets in.

Falguni Pathak’s Favourite Gujarati:

Chhand Ane Doha Mathe Matu Mahini Nadi Kinare Naliyeri Aavo To Ramvane Taliyo Na Taale Chhailaji Re Oonchi Talavdi Ni Kor Rame Ambe Maa Bichhuda Bichhuda Pankhida Pankhida He Ji Re Riddhi De Siddhi De Najarna Jaam Sora Chayo Chayo Gayoto Nahi Melure Pethalpur Ma Mari Mahisagar Ne Aare Saathiaa Puravo Dware Dham Dhammak Dham Sawaa Man Sonu Pani Gayatare Songs from Falguni Pathak’s Album: Aaiyo Rama Hath Aayee Pardesse Chudi Jo Khanke Maine Payal Hai Chhankai Mane Chudi Piravan Lagyo Marja Ni Jhanzar Meri Chunar Udd O Piya Ooima Ooima Pal Pal Teri Yaad Rim Zim Saawan Mein

MOVIE PREVIEW: STUDENT OF THE YEAR

The road from youth to adulthood is paved with myriad emotions and Student Of The Year celebrates this colorful coming of age. It is the story of Abhimanyu Singh (Sidharth Malhotra) and Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) who travels the path of competition, envy, triumph, failure, manipulation and heartbreak in their mini-universe of St. Teresa's High School, Dehradun. Abhimanyu Singh a.k.a Abhi comes from a middle-class family and wants to achieve great heights of success and prosperity, the first step to which will be the Student of the Year trophy while Rohan Nanda a.k.a Ro, is the son of a business tycoon who grapples with a complex relationship with his father and knows that winning the Student Of the Year trophy will bag him the approval that he subconsciously craves for. When the two protagonists with distinct backgrounds and clear goals clash with each other in the locker room, football field and the canteen, there is no question in anyone's mind that the preset equations of the St. Teresa's campus were about to change.

When Abhi and Rohan's rivalry takes an unexpected turn to friendship, neither pre-empts the complications that would brew. Things are further knotted up when Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt), the most popular girl on the campus enters the equation. While Shanaya and Rohan are childhood sweethearts, Abhi's attraction for his best friend's girlfriend and Shanaya's quiet reciprocation causes a rift in their friendship that would have a long lasting impact. Looming large over the various friendships in the campus is the Student Of The year trophy and Dean Yogendra Vasisht's (Rishi Kapoor) emphasis on success and victory. Towards the end of the term, the foes-turned-friends-turned foes, Abhi and Rohan, are ready for a face-off and battle lines are drawn through the length and breadth of the campus, with only one goal in everyone's eyes - Student Of The Year Trophy. As new ambitions are born and old loyalties fall by the wayside, each segment of the Student Of The Year competition manages to tear apart both, the participants and the spectators, to redefine the choices of the three protagonists. What will Abhimanyu choose? Victory or Friendship? What will Rohan choose? Victory or Dreams? What will Shanaya choose? Victory or Emotions? "Student Of The Year hasn't been designed as a saga per se that requires an extended story to be told", a senior crew member adds, "Moreover this is the first time Karan is working with newcomers. With superstars you can still hold audience for three hours or more but with newcomers, it only makes sense to make it short and simple." Commercially too it makes sense for a near two hour length as it allows Student Of The Year a large number of shows in multiplexes, hence allowing bigger moolah. When contacted, Karan confirmed the developments. "Yes, this is going to be the shortest film of my career. Though I am yet to arrive at the final cut, it should be around 135-140 minutes at maximum." Release Date: 19th Oct

AIYYA – MOVIE REVIEW Till a few years ago, Bollywood was known for churning out hero-centric movies. The leading ladies were treated as mere props

or eye candy in most Hindi movies. That's not all, heroine-centric themes were considered dicey, since not many were ready to invest their crores on stories that centred around female protagonists. But 2012 has made the naysayers chew their words. Now AIYYAA, which rides on Rani Mukerji's shoulders, is all set to break the stereotype. Like all Anurag Kashyap movies [he wears the producer's hat this time, it's directed by Sachin Kundalkar], AIYYAA takes on a novel premise and transports you to an altogether new world. This time, it's about a middle class family living in Mumbai. What sets it apart is that this Maharashtrian girl - Tamil guy prem kahani [Rani, Prithviraj] is woven around the concept of smell/aroma. Also, a lot many middle class girls feel suffocated when they can't choose the guy they want to spend the rest of their life with. In AIYYAA, the girl chooses her own groom, defying her family's choice. But AIYYAA is not a serious take on the institution of marriage. It's an amusing journey, actually.

AIYYAA is a desi film at heart. Also, quirky and funny. But the humor is more of the Hrishikesh

Mukherjee/Basu Chatterjee variety. What makes this film stand apart is that it does away with the crutches of big stars [except Rani], forced humor, unnecessary songs, international locales or grandiose sets. Meenakshi [Rani Mukerji] is a young Maharashtrian woman who is fixated with movies and movie stars and loves escaping into her make-believe world. She gets attracted to a painter, Surya [Prithviraj Sukumaran], because he smells good. But there's a hitch: She's all set to be engaged to Madhav [Subodh Bhave], who happens to be her parents' choice. Although the plot is innovative, but skeletal, what keeps the film going is Sachin Kundalkar's ability to stumble upon humor in the most ordinary situations. In fact, a number of sequences merit a mention here, but that would ruin the fun. Again, this is one of those rare movies where every actor, big or small, sparkles in their respective part. Wait, beyond the laughs and smiles, there's a sensitive side to AIYYAA as well. The girl is eventually torn between the man she desires and the man she's all set to be engaged to. The emotional

conflict towards the concluding stages may seem convenient, but is completely satisfying nonetheless. Sachin catches the pulse of the Maharashtrian backdrop and does immense justice to the written material. Moreover, while the middle class setting of Mumbai has been explored in several Hindi movies, it looks so real in AIYYAA. The characters, their home, the verbal communication… everything seems original here. This director, in my opinion, is a prized find. On the flipside, it takes time to get the hang of things. Also, the first half seems stretched, with a few unnecessary sequences adding to the run time. But the second hour more than compensates for the deficiencies. Amit Trivedi's music is already a sure-fire hit. 'Dreamum Wakeuppam' is already a chartbuster and so is 'Aga Bai'. The tantalizing and enticing choreography of these two tracks [Vaibhavi Merchant] deserves distinction marks. AIYYAA is what it is for varied reasons and one of them is Rani's livewire act. A complete natural, Rani glides through her part with brilliance. An accomplished actor, who can handle the comic sequences with as much flourish as the emotional ones, Rani is absolutely ravishing. Prithviraj, who has several South Indian films to his credit, does a super job in his first Hindi outing. He has striking screen presence, has worked hard to get in shape, but most importantly, he is a damn confident actor. Subodh Bhave is excellent and matches up to Rani on several occasions. Nirmiti Sawant [Rani's mother] incites laughter in abundance. So does Jyoti Subhash [the grand-mom], who is too funny. Anita Date [as Maina, Rani's colleague] is superb. Ditto for Ameya Wagh [Rani's brother], who's an actor to watch. Satish Alekar [Rani's father], Kishori Ballal [Prithviraj's mother] and Pakada Pandi [canteen boy] are wonderful in their respective parts. On the whole, there are reasons aplenty as to why AIYYAA becomes a deserving watch. It's arresting, amusing, entertaining and of course, thoroughly enjoyable, with Rani's splendid act, refreshingly different plot, winsome songs, pleasant humor and terrific moments as its aces. Don't miss it!

Aries (Mar. 20--Apr. 19) :

Facts, figures, and details of paperwork may interfere with your need to be autonomous this week. Issues related to financial investments, debts, or partner’s resources are nagging and demanding close attention. It is also possible that you will become fired up over a new idea. Wait awhile before you sink money into it. Taurus (Apr. 20--May 19):

You may be going through a time that feels lonely. This is definitely not the week to listen to the Inner Critic that exaggerates small episodes into a belief that you don’t “belong” in some way. Make an effort to avoid old knee-jerk reactions. Come from the Self that you are now. Gemini (May 20 -- June 20) : You have had a need to make significant changes in your daily life in order to enhance your personal health. This may include a change of work venue or organizing your schedule in order to give more attention to your health. Others may not see this, but you know quite well what is happening to your body. Cancer (June 21--Jul y 21) :

It appears that you have made a decision concerning property or resources and you feel truly definite about it. Your heart and your mind are in sync. Others in your life, i.e. children or lovers, may wish to quarrel about it, but you are not likely to budge from this position. There may be injured feelings, but everyone will survive.

Leo (July 22 --Aug. 21):

From now through the end of Oct., you are focused on issues of home, security, family and property. You are in a somber frame of mind this week. Decisions in front of you have long term consequences, so you do not want to make mistakes. Anything or anyone that is elderly may require your attention. Virgo (Aug 22--Sep. 22) :

There may be a crisis with your children, siblings, neighbors, or a lover this week. There are elements of obsessive thinking and criticism involved. Be intentional about keeping an open mind and don't insist on a black and white answer. Ultimately this situation is intended to allow growth through metamorphosis. Libra (Sep. 23--Oct. 22)

For any number of reasons, circumstances may leave you out of the social loop this week. Astrologically this is a time for self-reflection andnot self-condemnation. Having a quiet week is appropriate at this time. Don’t turn this into a negative belief about yourself. Enjoy the time to be still and enjoy the quiet. Scorpio (Oct. 23--Nov. 21) :

This is a week in which you will tend to be thinking obsessively. It is an opportunity to learn how to better control your mind. Shift your attention to something less dramatic, such as whatever is happening this moment, rather than worrying over what might happen in the future.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 --Dec.

20) :

Your energies are high. You may be involved in competitive sports or other activities that involve use of the large muscles in the body. You will certainly have more energy to do whatever you choose, but take care that you don't promise way more than you can deliver. Capricorn ( Dec 21 -- Jan 19)

:

The “rules” and the world’s expectations have you tied up like a pretzel right now. Everything feels so very serious. The harder you struggle, the tighter those binds seem to become. It’s like a Chinese puzzle. If you relax on the control issues, the solution comes through. Give it some space. Aquarius (Jan. 20--Feb. 17) : Many of you are on the verge of major changes concerning life direction. It is important to remain in touch with your core self. At this point it would be all too easy to allow your ego to take control and eventually that will not prove to be rewarding. Your mind and heart are somber as you make your choices. Pisces (Feb. 18--Mar. 19) :

The early part of the week is rather nondescript: fetch wood, carry water. Catch up on the routine things. The weekend forward augurs well for publishing, the internet, church life, teaching or learning, traveling, and the law. Activities related to home, hearth, and family will also have a green light.
