After dominating at Eastern University Games in July, 310 UTS students descended on Adelaide for the Australian University Games between the 23-28th September 2012. The team were in high spirits and had hopes of a top 10 finish at the end of play. After five intense days of competition Team UTS did not disappoint! After a shaky start on Day 1 the team stepped up for the rest of the week, and with huge depth in many sports took out sixth position overall after the final whistle was blown on Day 5 of competition. This is UTS’ best ever result at the Australian University Games since its inception in 1993, and we came in second only to Sydney University out of the NSW institutions, thrashing close rivals UNSW and Macquarie University. Special mention must be given to the UTS Mixed Handball Team and UTS Women’s Touch Team for taking out their Division 1 titles, as well as EAP scholars Jessie Quinn and Charlotte Wilson for their amazing all-round efforts in the Swimming Pool and Athletics Track respectively. UTS Kendo, the Men’s Tennis Team and Mixed Netball Team also produced amazing performances throughout the week to finish 2nd in their Division 1 Competitions. Green and Gold Merit Awards Team UTS also had 26 athletes chosen for their sport’s Green and Gold Merit squads, a selection of the best of the best across all universities for each event; and the ultimate achievement in national university sport competition. UTS ELITE ATHLETES@ World University Games SAILING

Four UTS EAP scholars attended the World University Championships (WUC) for Match Racing Sailing in Nice, France, between 3-8 September. Australia sent two men’s and two women’s teams, including UTS Sailors Jay Griffin, Jackson Cranfield, Katie Webb and Carla Sexton. Despite challenging weather conditions with little wind, Jay and Jackson brought home silver just behind the other Australian men’s team, adding to their silver medal from the 2010 WUC’s held in Greece. Katie and Carla are also to be congratulated on their three way tie for 5th, a great result from a strong field.

CITY 2 SURFTeam UTS finished 23rd out of 800 corporate teams. City2Surf 2012 saw the biggest UTS Team yet with 400 UTS students and staff in attendance. The team was well prepared for the race, after completing the three warm up walks and running clinics which took place in the lead up to the event.

Before the race, Team UTS met at the War Memorial Steps at Hyde Park for a team photo. It was there the Team UTS spirit came alive as friends and colleagues helped each other prepare for the big race. As they crossed the finish line at Bondi Beach, the Team in Teal were a standout!

The team’s excitement continued with post race celebrations in the UTS Double Marquee on Bondi Beach. Aerial put on an amazing spread of food and beverages which was much appreciated by the team after their 14km trek from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach.
