Academy Xi: Our story

Hello and welcome to Academy Xi! Our mission is to transform the world through education by empowering a community of changemakers with the knowledge and skills to create their own positive waves of change.

Academy Xi is our answer to the insatiable demand for design and technology capabilities across all industries. We run short, practical and industry relevant courses in Human-Centred Design (UX, UI, Graphic and Service Design), Business and Marketing (Agile, Digital Marketing, Product Management and Data Analytics), and New and Emerging Tech (Mixed Reality Design).

Designed and taught by passionate industry experts, our courses empower people and teams with the skills and confidence to stay ahead of the industry curve, build a future-ready career and transform their lives.

What is UX and UI Design?

User Experience (UX) Design is a human-centred approach to designing digital products. It focuses on how a person feels when they’re using a digital product or service, like an app or a website. UX Designers place the user at the centre of the development process to ensure the product is easy and intuitive to use. They go through cycles of research, testing, and refinement until they reach a final product that is user-friendly and profitable for the business who created it.

User Interface (UI) Design focuses on the look, feel, and interactivity of digital products or services. UI Design defines all visual elements that users interact or navigate with, such as buttons, scrollbars, dropdown menus, icons, and more. UI Designers consider the layout,

grids, typography, and colour of each feature on screen. They also focus on the interactivity of the interface, such as what a button or an icon does when a user clicks, taps, or swipes it.

UX and UI Designers possess different but complementary skills. They often work closely together to create effective design solutions. To provide you with a greater understanding of the end-to-end design workflow and stronger employment opportunities, we’ve included an additional UI module in this course.

TAUGHT BY LEADING INDUSTRY PRACTITIONERS

Our course is designed and supported by leading industry experts with extensive experience. Being a seasoned UX UI practitioner doesn’t qualify you to teach, nurture students or lead projects effectively. Why choose this course?

Every time you use a digital product, your experience of it and the impression it leaves is the result of “good” or “poor” UX and UI Design. Knowing that one in three consumers will walk away from a brand they love after just one bad experience (PwC, The Future of CX), it’s clear that UX and UI Design have the potential to directly impact a company’s bottom line.

This course is for you if you want to complement your existing professional expertise and boost your career with in-demand skills in UX, UI, design thinking and human-centred processes.

You’ll explore all key UX concepts and get an introduction to UI, in order to design high-quality digital products or services that align with customers’ needs. As the best way to learn

is by doing, you’ll gain hands-on experience by working on various activities. You’ll also build your portfolio to demonstrate your practical skills to a current or future employer.

This intake-based online course is a social and interactive learning environment. You’ll start the course and go through the topics at the same pace as all other students. Thanks to regular classmates interactions, fortnightly live video sessions, and on-demand private consultations with your mentor, you’ll never feel like you’re studying alone.

Portfolio assessment

Our graduates are recognised by the industry to possess essential knowledge and skills in UX and UI. To ensure you achieve the specified outcomes, this course includes a course-wide project assessment—an excellent opportunity for you to demonstrate your competence with UX UI skills and your hands-on experience with a real project.

The assessment is centred around the development of a portfolio. You will be required to “solve a problem” of your own selection* using UX UI Design practices. The course will lead you through the process of defining, designing, developing, and presenting your approach and concept. You’ll need to submit your portfolio and present your strategy via videolink to the course mentor.

At the end of the course, you’ll receive structured feedback from your mentor of where you went well, and ways you could improve. This is your opportunity to create a portfolio that demonstrates your practical skills to current or future employers.

To prepare for the assessment, you should complete all the activities and tasks throughout the course to ensure you are applying the techniques appropriately. You can also test your knowledge through topic quizzes.
