We Are One

This is not what I initially wrote for my March letter My first draft heralded the start of spring written in pastel col-ors and filled with fluffy con-tent But with the most recent news coming out of Park-land Florida this version is decidedly more somber

Politics aside each of us shares a common hope a common prayer a common goal - to keep everyone at Cheyenne Mountain safe from harm The massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School follows the dev-astating grief of survivors and loved ones after similar acts at Columbine High School Virginia Tech Sandy Hook Elementary and so many others not as well known but no less tragic Parents at many of those schools said they never dreamed it would happen there

How did we get to a time and place where bullseyes are on the backs of our children

We used to cross our fingers in hopes our students come home with the news they made the varsity team aced the calculus exam or mas-tered the saxophone solo Now we add a silent plea that they come home without get-ting shot

Yet we must not live a life in fear We have a team of ad-ministrators teachers coun-selors and staff dedicated to ensuring every day that our CMHS Indians can challenge themselves in academics athletics and the fine arts and to create fun high school memories without having to worry about their safety New protocols or changes to exist-ing rules of conduct are im-plemented to create more effective barriers against those with dark agendas They try to review every an-gle and consider every hypo-thetical situation to find solu-tions designed to protect the well-being of everyone on campus

They cannot do it alone We all have a responsibility to

make sure we are doing the best for our school communi-ty You as a parent can help by having the difficult conversation with your child about being proactive and speaking confidentially with a counselor or utilizing the anonymous Safe2Tell sys-tem if she hears or sees worrisome or out-of-pattern behavior If you hear about something suspicious please speak up And if you have useful suggestions ideas andor relevant professional experience that might shed some new light and help guide District 12 in its safety procedures I invite you to contact Dr Cooper or Princi-pal Fortenberry to discuss them

Dont wait Act now Because we are always stronger when we work together when we are a united force when We Are One

In response to the tragic event in Parkland Florida Chey-enne Mountain School Dis-trict 12 Superintendent Dr Walt Cooper sent an email to the patrons of the district In the email he outlined the safe-ty precautions we have in place to address the possibil-ity of a similar event occur-ring at CMHS If you have any questions about how the high school implements the tools personnel and proto-cols described in the email I encourage you to email me or stop by for a conversation In addition to the physical safety practices mentioned in Dr Cooperrsquos email the high school has a robust Multi-Tiered Systems of Support in place to address the behavior-al and academic well being of students MTSS is a ldquoprevention-based framework of team-driven data-based problem solving for improv-ing the outcomes of every student through family school and community part-nering and a layered continu-

um of evidence-based practic-es applied to the classroom and schoolrdquo The MTSS process has prov-en to be a valuable tool that we have utilized to help many students that need academic and behavioral guidance The process has also been instru-mental in identifying students that need mental health assis-tance andor a student that may pose a threat If a stu-dent is identified through the MTSS process student re-ports or Safe2Tell as a possi-ble threat to self or others a threat screening is performed and if deemed appropriate a complete threat assessment is conducted Appropriate ac-tion is taken depending on the results of the threat assess-ment In her recent article In Re-sponse to the Shooting in Florida Cheri Lovre of the Crisis Management Institute in Salem Oregon presented ideas on how to address stu-dents about feeling safe at

school She offered several suggestions about how to let students ask questions and how to listen to their con-cerns She also listed several concepts to reinforce to stu-dents that they are statistical-ly much safer at school than in many other places and situ-ations However while the statistics she offered may be somewhat reassuring they certainly do not justify any complacency on our part in ensuring we keep the school as safe as possible Again if you have concerns or questions about school safety please contact me at your convenience Sincerely Don

A Message from the School Resource Officer

Drive Smart of Colorado is offering a free class for parents and their new teen drivers I have included the flyer with of

the details and how to sign up

I would like to recognize the Cheyenne Mountain High School Cheerleaders On Wednesday February 14th

the cheer-

leading squad organized a fundraiser to support slain Deputy Micah Flick of the El Paso County Sheriffrsquos Office The

event was held prior to senior night recognition of the Cheyenne Mountain girlrsquos basketball game against Falcon High

School The cheerleading squad contacted the El Paso County Sheriffrsquos Office and invited them to attend the game and

speak on the behalf of Deputy Flick and his family

Prior to the start of the game both teams joined the cheerleading squad at mid court Members of the El Paso County

Sheriffrsquos Office joined them and spoke briefly about Deputy Flick before holding a moment of silence The cheerleading

squad then went into the stands and passed a hat collecting money for Deputy Flickrsquos family

The Cheyenne Mountain community should be very proud the students in this district As a member of the local law en-

forcement community I appreciate the support from this community and am proud to be a part of this great school dis-

trict and the students here at Cheyenne Mountain High School I have attached the link from the KOAA website

AP EXAM REGISTRATION Registration for AP exams is now open and will run through March 22 (Thursday before spring break) The College Board sets AP exam fees and this yearrsquos cost is $94 per exam This year we are glad to be able to continue to offer the option of paying for exams online with a credit card using the districtrsquos web payment system Go to the CMHS Pay for High School Activities link and to pro-ceed with online registration and payment by clicking on ldquoHigh School Activitiesrdquo Please note that there is a convenience fee added to online payments If payment is made online students will still need to come to the Counseling Office to verify the tests that they are taking and pick up the ldquoBulletin for AP Students and Parentsrdquo Students also still have the option of registering and paying by cash or check in the Counseling Office Fee reductions are available for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and these registrations must be done in at the Counseling Office before the March 22 deadline Late registra-tions will be accepted April 2 ndash 12 ($114 per exam) AP exams will be administered at CMHS May 7 ndash May 18

CLASS OF 2018 CONTINUING SUPPORT AND OPPORTUNITIES FROM COLLEGE SERVICES The majority of our seniors have applied to colleges or made plans for military service

community service or going into the workforce For those who have not decided what is next after high school please see Mrs Thompson in College Services so we can talk about the opportunities that are available after high school graduation There are a number of schools in Colorado and throughout the country that will accept applications through the spring and we can still help with applications and transcripts as needed If your student is considering community college representatives are coming to CMHS this month to provide information answer questions and even help students complete an application The Lamar Community College rep will be here on March 12 and the Pikes Peak Community College rep will be here on March 13 For students who want to fill out an application with the reps please have them stop by College Services in the Counseling Office to get information about what they will need to have that day to complete an application

CLASS OF 2019 ACT AND SAT TEST DATES AND DEADLINES The spring SAT and ACT testing cycle is especially designed for juniors Students are strongly encouraged to research their collegesrsquo testing deadlines and requirement and begin testing in the spring of their junior year and complete all necessary testing by early fall of their senior year There are several links on the College Services website and in the studentsrsquo Family Connection account to help them with their research of testing requirements and deadlines Students may register online for either the ACT or SAT tests To register online for the ACT go to actorg and for the SAT go to satorg When registering online a credit card must be used for payment for either the ACT or SAT Below are the remaining test dates for the remainder of the 2017-18 school year The April ACT and the May SAT will be offered at CMHS as a national test site and students can register and pay for the testing at CMHS online as they would for any Saturday National Test Dates

PLEASE REPORT COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES AND SCHOLARSHIPS TO MRS SMITH Please report to Mrs Smith in the College Services Center where your student has been accepted to college Please report all scholarships as well Most colleges and universities do not notify Cheyenne Mountain High School of the scholarships our seniors are awarded A list of all reported scholarships will be available in the counseling office in May 2018 Please be sure your seniorrsquos scholarships are recognized and honored in this list Only scholarships are listed

PREPARATION FOR COLORADO STATE TESTING IN APRIL All juniors will take the SAT on April 10 all sophomores will take the PSAT 10 on April 11 and all freshmen will take the PSAT 9 on April 12 Students do not need to register or pay for these exams because they are the Colorado State Assessments and they will automatically be registered by the state Students can prepare for these exams by utilizing the resources available through a joint effort by the College Board (company that produces the SAT and PSAT) and Khan Academy Students can link their accounts and take advantage of free personalized test preparation to help them get their best possible scores If students do not have a College Board account with past test scores they can take a diagnostic quiz on the Khan Academy site to assess the skills where they need the most im-provement We hope that students and their parents will take a look at this opportunity at httpswwwkhanacademyorgsat

AVP Hairstyling Program Pikes Peak Community College Area Vocational Program is primarily for students who are interested in pursuing an associatersquos degree or certificate in a career and technical field or entering the job market directly after finishing high school Courses provide core academic and elective credit Specific credits vary by program AVP credit in core areas will not ful-fill NCAA athletic course requirements See a high school counselor for detailed infor-mation The International Salon and Spa Academy (ISSA) program is a two-year course of study designed to train high school juniors and seniors to become hairstylists The program prepares students to sit for the hairstylist examination given by the Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure for the State of Colorado Courses provide core academic and elec-tive credit

National Honor Society Membership Application Information for Class of 2019

Juniors who have a cumulative GPA of at least 36 on the unweighted scale or 385 on the weighted scale received a letters prior to February 2 informing them of their eligibility to apply for membership in the National Honor Society The application packet is due back to Mr Philipp by 315 PM on Wednesday March 7 2018 All applicants must submit their packets personally to Mr Philipp by the deadline Completed application packets can certainly be sub-mitted before the deadline

Juniors who submitted completed NHS applications will be informed of their membership status via mailed letters on Thursday April 12 Each applicant must meet all of the criteria established for membership selec-tion in order to become a member of National Honor Society If any student is not accepted into member-ship heshe may appeal the decision by talking personally with Mr Philipp the NHS sponsor It may be that the applicant was not accepted because the application was missing vital information or it may be for other reasons such as a lack of service hours Any student wishing to appeal must start the appeal process Induction for the new members will be on Sunday April 29 at 630 PM in the Kiva (former CMHS cafeteria) Inductees are expected to attend More details about the induction will be included in the membership letters each inductee receives If you have any questions please contact Doug Philipp (x1205) or via email at philippcmsd12org

Traditions of Excellence Foundation Event Denim amp Diamonds Mark your calendars (April 13) for a fun and festive night to support and celebrate D12 at Colorado Hall at The Broadmoor All proceeds from the event go to support the Tradition of Excellence Foundation a 501(c)3 tax exempt or-ganization dedicated to supporting excellence in Cheyenne Mountain Schools in Academics Athletics and the Arts All dollars raised through the Foundation are given directly to the school district and are 100 tax deductible From iPads and a 3D printer to Musical Instruments and Robot Kits every school in the district receives support from the Foundation The Foundation typically awards close to $50000 annually A full listing of grants made last year can be found on the Foundation website httpswwwcmsdk12coustoef The theme for this yearrsquos event is lsquoDenim amp Diamondsrsquo noteworthy because the Broadmoor is celebrating its Centennial this year A diamond the symbol of a 100th year anniversary honors the rich historic relation-ship between the Broadmoor and Cheyenne Mountain Schools Come celebrate with appetizers entertain-ment and fabulous auction items Look for your invitation in the mail or go to httpswwwcmsdk12coustoef to purchase tickets online

there are classes and clubs that require volunteer hours and community service is a great resume build-

er STAH helps out at school events and members can volunteer in the community at Humane Society

events Care amp Share Food Bank Springs Rescue Mission and Habitat for Humanitys ReStore Did you know

that you can earn a letter in community service Keep track of your volunteer hours during the summer and

the school year and then fill out a STAH hours recording sheet found in the library Anyone can join STAH at

Drama News The Cheyenne Mountain High School Drama Dept will present the spring play THE WOMEN OF LOCKERBIE on April 12 and 13 at 7pm and April 14 at 2pm in the Black Box Theatre This award winning play concerns the Pan Am Flight 103 that exploded over Lockerbie Scotland on Dec 21 in 1988 A mother (Stephanie Ngassa-Blake) from New Jersey roams the hills of Lockerbie Scotland looking for any remembrance of her son lost seven years ago in the bombing of Pan Am 103 Her husband (Josh Greene) is doing all that he can to support his wife and deal with his own grief She meets the women of Lockerbie (Jamie Galvan Grace Mebust Dylan Cross Eliza Rocks Nevaeh Booker Maggie Mulder Veronica Davis Nicky Lau Alex Plante and Michelle DeMoss) who are fighting the US government represented by George Jones (Cameron Russell) to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the planes wreckage The women determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victims families Inspired by true events and written in the structure of a Greek tragedy this is a poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate Our event after this is April 24 - A NIGHT OF IMPROV but maybe we can get that in the April newsletter And I have attached 3 pics of the Advanced Acting students at the Pikes Peak One Act Competition It was held at Mitchell High School on Fri Feb 9th This is the cast of a one-act called 4AM We won 3rd place and we won the BEST ENSEMBLE award

Lady Indians SwimDive Team

took 2nd Place at the 4A State

Meet and Cat Wright brought

home the GOLD in the 200 IM

and all of our swimmers for an-

other great season

Our Wrestling team qualified

nine student-athletes to partici-

pate in the 2018 4A Wrestling

State Championships Outside

of a couple disappointing inju-

ries we proved to be successful

on the Mats at the Pepsi Center

Mike McFadden displayed his

true passion and grit throughout

the weekend bringing home the

Gold and is our Colorado 138

State Champ

Post Season play for both Boysrsquo

and Girlsrsquo Basketball resulted in

some exciting down to the final

second games that brought

State Playoffs Although a win to

move onto the Quarterfinals was-

The Wrestling Team completed another incredible season by winning the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference and finishing runner-up at Regionals Nine varsity wrestlers qualified for State where the team finished 10th overall (unfortunately injuries to State-qualifiers Deonte Bridges and Rick Stark meant that the team only had seven wrestlers compete at the Pepsi Center February 15th-17th) Cian Quiroga finished 5th at 195 pounds and Kevin Hooks took the podium with a 4th place finish at 145 pounds The highlight of the season was Mike McFaddenrsquos State Championship title at 138 pounds McFadden capped off a stellar high school wrestling career where he has placed in the top 6 at the State Championships since his freshman year McFadden is the Indiansrsquo first state wrestling champion since 2007 Congrat-ulations to all of the Indian Wrestlers on a great season
