In kona Is MagICal

By George Christopher Thomas, Travel Writer KOnA, HAWAII -- After a delightful morning golfing at the Big Island Country Club, one of the most relaxing activities is an afternoon snorkel out to the Captain Cook monument. On a recent family trip to Kona, Hawaii for some rest and relaxation, my dad and I spent the morning birding and golfing, then met the rest of the clan at the Sea Paradise office just off of Ali’i Drive.The great people at Sea Paradise fitted the entire group with wetsuits, masks and snorkels, and then we were off. It takes about an hour to get to the Captain Cook monument, and as we ventured out I noticed the crew had fishing rods and they were baiting the lines with lures. Apparently we were also going to be marlin and tuna fishing, which was totally cool.So there I was in Kona, Hawaii, fishing for marlin and trolling for tuna, as we cruised out to snorkel the afternoon away... not too bad. There are certain snorkel spots in the world that are unmatched and unsurpassed, and the Captain Cook monument is just that -- one of the best on the planet. The reason the snorkel spot is so special, and why the Big Island is so unique, is that the underwater shelf just drops out into the great abyss only about 100 yards off shore. There is something eerie and a tad bit haunting about staring out into the great open ocean and knowing you could see a whale shark or hammerhead might just swim by. But in all likelihood, all you are going to see are harmless little fishes, cute turtles and adorable eels. The Sea Paradise catamaran is really cool, and entry and exit into the ocean is on a ladder stair-case type contraption, making it super easy for all ages and snorkeling abilities. We came to learn that the monument is the only British territory in America. As my lady is English, she could not wait to jump off the catamaran, swim to shore, and be sovereign in her own country. I reminded her she is subject to the crown, and at any moment the Queen could call and make her do push-ups or dispatch her to fetch something. Joanne stayed on the boat but I could tell she wanted a cup of tea, and to watch some soccer. We were finally at our spot, where we had about three or four hours of water time. There was plenty of time to slowly swim all around two or three times, come back to the boat for back-flips off the side, and get back into the water again for a final snorkel run. This is the way to go. Boy will dinner hit the spot once you get back to shore -- let me suggest Tante’s Restaurant in the heart of Kona-town.I always see turtles in Kona. I have been lucky enough to visit Maui, I once touched Lanai, and I used to live in Oahu, but for some reason I always encounter a plethora

and cornucopia of sea turtles in Kona. So for a few hours as we snorkeled and swam up and down the coast, I pretended I was a turtle, or Honu as they are called in Hawaiian. We had an absolutely fabulous time, and the people at Sea Paradise in Kona are consummate professionals and will take excellent care of you and your traveling companions. First was “Park Strangers,” where a fading stage star is paired with a younger actress in a commercial. At first the older woman is hostile, but the two find what they have in common and draw closer. It was superbly acted by Susan Atch and Beege Barkette. Second, was “Swans” in which a woman wants to get married and feels that the man she’s been living with for the past three years doesn’t

have the same commitment to their relationship. This was well-done by Esai Morales as the young man and Dahlia Waingort as the young woman. Lots of clever lines and witticisms about relationships in this work. The third Featured Ed Asner and Mark Rydell as two brothers, Rydell as Joey (who is well-off but feels ‘life sucks’), and Asner as Jay (his costume of tennis shorts, sneakers, a T-shirt well indicates his economic status)

who are settling several issues. Over the years I had seen Ed Asner perform in several staged readings for the Celebrity Staged Readings produced by Alexandra Mora. I always see a good performance from this man. But, the last time I saw Mark Rydell as an actor was as “Jeff Baker” in the soap opera “As The World Turns,” way back in the last years of the 1950’s. He has become a very successful director with even an Oscar nomination. But, what would he be like as an actor? In this reading Mark Rydell showed he hasn’t lost the touch which made hearts flutter over “Jeff.”Well done. Sadly, Asner was leaving the show as he was going to be filming a movie. But, replacing him is George Segal on July 14 and 15 and actor-producer-director Allan Miller will take over the role of “Jay” beginning July 21st. The Santa Monica Playhouse is located at 1211 Fourth Street, Santa Monica, just steps from Wilshire Boulevard. Admission is $20. RAY CHARLES: GENIUS+SOUL=JAZZ

Oh, what an evening of great jazz on Wednesday night at the Hollywood Bowl. Opening the show with a few remarks was renowned PBS host Tavis Smiley. Performing the music

that made Charles a household legend was the “All-Star Band.” The second half of the program was dominated by the Count Basie Orchestra. Several in their box seats jumped up and began dancing to the music. It was a real jumpin’ evening.The show opened with a Charles number, “I Got A Woman,” with BeBe Winans on the vocals and Blanchard on a trumpet solo. Oh, Golly was that smooth! Dee Dee Bridgewater (in a gold lame dress and matching gold platform shoes) and BeBe Winans teamed up to “Hallejuah I Love Her (Him) So.”The second act opened with the Count Basie Orchestra and the All-Star Band performing Ray Charles’ signature “Georgia on my Mind.” And, closing the evening was the Ray Charles version of “America the Beautiful” performed by the entire company. Gave one the chills. During the evening the video screen showed a funny Saturday night Live skit that featured Ray Charles himself along with the late Jim Belushi, Gilda Radner and Dan Akyroyd, etc. The entire evening was one of song. Also on the vocals were Kenny “Babyface’ Edmunds, Martina McBride as well as the Raelettes- Patti Austin, Siedah Garrett, Monica Mancini, and Lynne Fiddomont.Coming to the Wednesday night Jazz Series at the Hollywood Bowl will be the Duke Ellington Orchestra and a Salute to Stan Kenton on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. Warrants serVed/arrest Made at MedICal MarIjuana dIspensary In san fernando Valley

LOS AnGELES, CA -- Detectives from Topanga Area narcotics Enforcement Detail (NED) served search warrants at a medical marijuana dispensary and at a private resi-dence in the west San Fernando Valley, resulting in one arrest and a cache of narcotics, money, and other evidence of illegal drug sales. On Wednesday, July 11, 2012, around 2:00 p.m., Topanga Area detectives met at a commercial marijuana dispensary in the 21600 block of Ventura Boulevard and at a home in the 7700 block of Tampa Avenue to serve numerous search warrants. The warrants were obtained after an extensive investi-gation into the illegal sales of marijuana from the dispensary on Ventura Boulevard. One Los Angeles resident, 31-year-old Corey Plank, was arrested for Possession for Sales of Marijuana and booked at Valley Jail Section. He is being held on $30,000, bail. Ad-ditionally, investigators will be seeking arrest warrants through the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for three additional suspects who were not present when the search warrants were served. Investigators recovered approximately $10,000, in cash from the dispensary and the residence. At the dispensary, investigators recovered approx-imately 22 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $66,000. Recovered from the residence was a large quantity of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) steroids and 120 Oxycodone pills, commonly sold on the street for $30 each. Continue to the Angela Landa Elementary school, located in Old Havana. This primary school (ages 5 - 12) is located in a beautiful historical building which has been carefully renovated by Havana’s Office of the Historian. Interact with the children in their classrooms and participate in a discussion session with some of the school’s administrators and teachers about Cuba’s education system and how it compares to that of the

united States. (This is the opportunity for you to personally deliver school supply gifts to the children or school. Any donations are greatly appreciated). Proceed to one of Papa Hemingway’s favorites, La Bodeguita del Medio, for lunch followed by a visit to historic Havana. Visit the Plaza de la Revolucion, the Cemetery of Christopher Colombus, the Miramar area and Morro Castle, with its magnificent views of Havana. Late this afternoon before dinner, participate in an open discussion with an English-speaking historian from the university of Havana. The theme of this open, uncensored discussion centers on the history of u.S.-Cuban relations in the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Current day Cuba finds itself in the initial stages of encouraging investment in local business. One area where new ventures are flourishing is in the restaurant industry. This evening, meet with the owner or general manager and some of the workers of one of Havana’s finest and most interesting new restaurants, El Gijon. Hear firsthand how new businesses -- especially restaurants -- get started, find working capital, and make a profit in a society where private business ventures are almost unknown. Also, learn about the history of the “Association” restaurants, of which El Gijon is one of the best. Afterwards, enjoy dinner at El Gijon. - Day 4: Depart Havana after breakfast this morning

and drive to the Bay of Pigs (pictured above). Hike for about one hour through thick bush led by a Cuban nature guide to a hidden pool which is connected underground to the Caribbean Sea. Lunch is served at the Cueva de los Peces where there will be a wonderful opportunity to snorkel and view this rarely visited tropical fish reef. Continue the drive along the Caribbean coast to the charming old Spanish colonial town of Trinidad. Designated a unESCO World Heritage site, Trinidad is one of the best preserved towns in all of Latin America. Dinner this evening is at a beachfront hotel located on Playa Ancon on the Caribbean Sea. presIdent oBaMa’s Weekly address“Over the past couple weeks I’ve been talking with folks across the country about how we’re going to rebuild an economy where if you work hard, you and your family can get ahead.

And right now, there’s a big debate going on in Washington over two fundamentally different paths we can take as a country to do that. One path – pushed by Republicans in Congress and their nominee for President – says that the best way to create prosper-ity is to let it trickle down from the top. They believe that if we spend trillions more on tax cuts for the wealthy, it’ll somehow create jobs – even if we have to pay for it by gutting education and training and by raising middle-class taxes. I think they’re wrong. We already tried it that way for most of the last decade, and it didn’t work. We’re still paying for trillions of dollars in tax cuts that benefitted the wealthiest Americans more than anyone else; tax cuts that didn’t lead to the rise in wages and middle class jobs that we were promised; and that helped take us from record

surpluses to record deficits. The last thing we need right now is more top-down economics. What we need are policies that will grow and strengthen the middle class; that will help create jobs, make educa-tion and training more affordable, and encourage businesses to start up and stay right here in the united States. Soon, we’ll face a choice between these two different approaches. On January 1st, taxes are set to go up for tens of millions of Americans. I think that would be a huge financial hit for middle-class families. That’s why I’ve cut middle-class taxes every year that I’ve been President – by $3,600 for the typical family. And that’s why, this week, I called on Congress to immediately stop the January 1st tax hike from hitting any American on the first $250,000 of their income. Under my plan, 98% of American families won’t see their income taxes go up at all. But the other 2% of Americans will have to pay a little more in taxes on anything they make over $250,000. In other words, the wealthiest few Americans will go back to the income tax rates they were paying under Bill Clinton. And if you re-member, that was when our econ-omy created nearly 23 million new jobs, the biggest budget surplus in history, and million-aires were doing pretty well. The folks in Congress and on the cam-paign trail who oppose this plan warn that it would somehow hurt small businesses and job creators. Well, they’re completely ignor-ing the facts. under my plan, 97% of small business owners would avoid getting hit with any income tax hike whatsoever. In fact, I’ve cut taxes for small busi-nesses eighteen times since I’ve been President. And just this week, I ordered a series of new steps to help our small businesses grow and hire. The only place we disagree is whether we keep giv-ing tax cuts to the wealthiest 2% of Americans. Republicans in Washington want more of those tax cuts. With the deficit we have, I don’t think we can afford them. But even if we disagree on the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, we all agree that no American should pay more taxes on the first $250,000 of their in-come. So let’s at least agree to do what we all agree on. That’s what compromise is all about. Let’s not hold the vast majority of Americans and our entire econo-my hostage while we debate the merits of another tax cut for the wealthy. Let’s skip the unneces-sary drama, the needless delays and all the partisan posturing and let’s just do the right thing for the people who sent us here to serve. And I’m going to keep fighting to make sure we rebuild an economy that rewards work, grows the middle class, and gives new opportunity to those trying to earn their way into the middle class.
