VAUGHAN’S NEWEST LIBRARY SITS BETWEEN HISTORIC BUILDINGS TO THE WEST AND NEW CITY HALL TO THE EAST

By AdAm [email protected]

You really can’t miss it while travelling along Major Mackenzie Drive

through the heart of Maple’s historic core.

The new Civic Centre Resource Library with its upward sweeping, curved roof and walls made of glass and reflective metal – evok-ing something out of a Dr. Seuss book or, perhaps, one of those sleek spaceship from the Star Wars film franchise – ranks among Vaughan’s most eye-catching buildings.

But Margie Singleton, CEO of Vaughan Public Libraries, says what people discover upon stepping inside the 36,000-square-foot building is really blowing them away.

“People are just in awe (of the building), but when they come inside they’re most amazed,” she said during a tour earlier this week ahead of the “soft opening” hap-

pening Saturday at 9 a.m.Among the “amazing”

features are the digital media “Create It Space” which includes a video room with green screens and a record-ing studio space, complete with a sound mixing board, where you can cut an album.

“These are going to be a funky feature of this loca-tion,” Singleton said.

She’s also jazzed about the central garden courtyard and upstairs terrace where visitors can drink in some fresh air or soak up some sun while sipping a coffee from the library’s café.

It certainly doesn’t feel like the staid, serious libraries of yesteryear.

That’s due, in part, to the fact the fun, funky tone set by its exterior design carries on inside.

You encounter it every-where from the light fixtures to the red, green, yellow and orange colour-scheme, which adorns the walls,

floor and even the furniture including the handful of arm-chairs with sound-muffling, privacy hoods that are sure to be in high demand.

In fact, a lot of thought went into dealing with noise, Singleton noted.

For instance, the teen col-lection sits in an enclosed room, with glass walls, equipped with couches and cushioned window seating.

The children’s area is also far from the quiet study area.

It offers some features par-ents and kids will enjoy such as puppet centres and heated floors in the story-time area.

Students doing group work can take advantage of the “collaboration rooms” equipped with a single moni-tor that their devices can con-nect to so everyone can easily see what’s on the screen.

Of course, there’s lots of books and magazines too — 70,000 to start with.

Other noteworthy features include self-checkout stations

and a drive-through book return.

When it came to design-ing the library, the goal was to create an indoor space that incorporates the elements you’d typically find in a tra-ditional Italian piazza, said Peter Duckworth-Pilkington, principal with ZAS Architects + Interiors.

“The idea of the openness of the interiors was about this concept of having a place where the community could meet and exchange ideas and

even create,” he said. The exterior design was

meant, in part, to reflect its location between the historic buildings to the west and the new city hall to the east, but it was also intended to signal that this is a vibrant place filled with activity, he noted.

“Libraries aren’t always just serious places,” Duck-worth-Pilkington said. “So that’s where we got this idea of these curvilinear forms, in some ways even echoing the roller coasters of Canada’s

Wonderland ... which we thought brought that kind of sense of fun.”

The building, which cost $13.3-million to construct, was also built with the envi-ronment in mind.

It has LED lights, low-flow toilets and a rainwater capturing system, and two electric vehicle charging sta-tions among other elements, aimed achieving a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver rating.

Still, many patrons of the old Maple Library — located less than a kilometre away — are fretting about the shelf life of their beloved branch once the new one opens.

The library board plans to keep it operating for a year then conduct a feasi-bility study to determine if attendance remains strong enough, Singleton said.

“The community uses that library like crazy,” she said. “We have no desire to close it, unless people don’t use it.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Drunk drivers should pay, for lifeRe: What will it take to stop scourge on our roads?, column by Marney Beck, April 14.

At the end of her column, was this rhe-torical question: “When are we — as a society — going to say enough is enough of this scourge?”

As a society, there is very little we can do about such [drinking driving] behav-iour. Humans are endowed with free will, which means we can make choices. Some are so full of themselves that they truly believe rules are made for others.

I know one individual personally who was caught speeding at over 200 km/hr. A few weeks later he was caught speed-ing again (at about the same speed), by the same police officer! How can we explain such idiotic behaviour?

Another example of our self-destruc-tive behaviour is smoking and taking so-called recreational drugs. We know they are harmful and yet some of us believe we have the right to do whatever we want, even if the harmful second-hand smoke will cause illness in others.

Education may help, but for those with an inflated opinion of themselves, they would just look at the rest of us as stuffed shirts and keep on causing mis-ery to others.

One suggestion I have been advocat-ing is to assess a monetary penalty, on

top of the prison sentence, on the con-victed offenders for life.

Should the victims or their families not want this “blood money,” then they can ask the court to order the offenders to donate money to a charity or charities of their choice.

In addition, convicted offend-ers should be ordered to make public speeches to young people for the rest of their lives on the evils of impaired driv-ing.

A 10-year sentence for killing four people is hardly a deterrent, no matter how we measure it.

The reality is that our parole system will effectively reduce that sentence to three or four years.

It is not a matter of being vengeful, it is a matter of finding effective means to minimize such carnage.

When a person makes a choice, s/he should be held responsible for its out-come — for life.

Their victims do not have that choice.

Although many of us — myself included — don’t pay much atten-tion to safety awareness campaigns held each year, it was impossible to ignore the stark realities illustrating why families should prepare for disaster.

Disaster struck May 3 in the northern Alberta town, and all Canadians have been watching in horror as 80,000 people — that’s the population of Newmarket — were forced to evacuate the flam-ing ruins of their community.

Can we learn a lesson from this tragedy before it’s too late for our own families?

The Region of York has a 99-page document on the ‘Risks in our area’. But if 99 pages is too daunting and time consuming for you to read, just click on your municipality’s website and find ‘Make an Emer-gency Plan’ or ‘Assemble a 72-Hour Kit’.

I clicked on the latter for Rich-mond Hill and found a two-page PDF of fairly simple — but vital — information and tips to follow to ensure my family is ready for a fire, flood, ice storm or any such emergency.

No one would dare say any-more, that ostrich-head-in-the-sand statement: “It can’t happen here”.

The December 2013 ice storm in Vaughan, Markham and Rich-mond Hill was a true disaster for those who lost power for days or had ice-coated trees topple on their properties.

An even more recent ice storm in March of this year caused $25-million in damage for residents in Newmarket and Georgina.

Flooding in a freak July 2013 rainstorm stranded passengers on a Richmond Hill-bound GO train. Those people rescued by rubber dinghies would certainly tell you

that disasters can — and do — hap-pen unexpectedly.

We can’t change the weather patterns and even the most envi-ronmentally committed residents know that climate change won’t be slowed or solved in a few years — or perhaps even in a generation.

The only thing we can do — besides donating generously to the Red Cross for fellow Canadians in Fort McMurray ($54 million to date, incredible!)— is get our own family ready for any emergency, large or small.

According to a federal emergen-cy link at www.getprepared.gc.ca, it only takes 20 minutes to make a family emergency plan online.

Before you click on the link, consider what safe exits you have from your home and neighbour-hood; what meeting place you want to reunite with family members at work or school; your plan for pets; and know vital contact numbers for people close by (neighbours) or out of town (family).

Have you seen black humour social media posts from Fort Mac evacuees saying in their panic to flee they took silly things with them such as a bear head trophy off a wall, or junk food treats, leaving behind key and precious objects?

We all need to know where health and insurance documents are, or passports, to grab quickly.

And it may sound mundane, but does each person in your home know the location of fire extinguish-ers, water valve, electrical panel, gas valve and floor drain?

As each of those 80,000 evacuees would no doubt agree, we should all be prepared for disaster.

Police seek Vaughan robbery suspects

York Regional Police are looking for two suspects following a robbery at a Vaughan convenience store last Thursday morning.

At 2:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a robbery at the store located in the Hwy. 7 and Martin Grove Road area. Two men entered the store, then one pointed a hand-gun at the clerk behind the counter and demanded cash.

The employee complied and the second suspect took the cash as well

as lottery tickets and cigars. Both men left the store and

headed north on Martin Grove Road on foot.

No injuries were reported. Both suspects are described as

white. One was between 25 to 30, wearing a dark blue winter jacket with fur on the hood, a red bandana over his face and carrying a hand-gun. The second suspect was wear-ing a dark coloured jacket and white bandana that covered his face.

Anyone with information should call police at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 6631 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

POLICE

Burglaries in several Vaughan residences over the last month have prompted York Regional Police to offer some tips to help you avoid being the next victim.

The break and enters are occur-ring at night, while homeowners

are sleeping. The culprits enter through

unlocked doors, typically through the garage, and steal small electron-ics, cash, jewelry and other small items.

Police offer the following advice

to avoid having your home burglar-ized.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact the York Regional Police No. 4 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at

1-866-876-5423, ext. 7441, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS, by leaving an anonymous

tip online at 1800222tips.com, or by texting your tip to CRIMES (274637) starting with the word YORK.

Night-time burglaries in Vaughan prompt police warning

PREVENTION TIPS• Always lock your doors and windows, including interior garage doors. Secure all basement and ground-level windows and patio doors• Do not leave keys or garage door openers inside your vehicle when it is parked in the driveway• When someone rings your doorbell or knocks on your door, make them aware that some-one is home, even if you don’t feel comfortable answering the door. For example, call out to the person that you can’t answer the door right now.• Be aware of suspicious people or vehicles in your neighbourhood and call police immedi-ately if you’re concerned.• Install dead-bolt locks on all exterior doors and self-tapping screws in the upper track of patio doors and windows.• Consider installing a home security system with an audible alarm and video surveillance and ensure everybody in the house knows how it works.• Do not announce your travel plans or absence from home on social media or your phone’s voicemail.• If going away on vacation or an extended absence, ask a trusted neighbour to watch your house and make your home look lived-in.• Do not discuss the contents of your home with others or leave packaging for expensive items on display in recycling bins.• Consider storing valuables in a safety deposit box.

York Regional Police charged a former Seneca College employ-ee with fraud after he allegedly defrauded the school of $200,000.

Officers began investigating April 15 after receiving a com-plaint from Seneca’s Markham campus about a series of frauds committed by one of the school’s employees.

Investigators determined a former facilities manager at the school submitted false invoices to the college using fake company names.

In total, Seneca was defrauded of about $216,000 between April 2013 and April 2016.

Police arrested the suspect last Thursday.

Atique Choudhry, 26, of Pick-ering, is charge with fraud over $5,000 and utter forged docu-ment.

Choudhry is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket June 9.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit at 1-866-876- 5423, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, by leave an anon-ymous tip online at 1800222tips.com, or by texting your tip to CRIMES (274637) starting with the word YORK.

Vaughan Deputy Mayor Michael Di Biase’s bid to quash a damning report by the city’s ethics czar and overturn the penalty imposed by city council based on her findings last year is slated to be heard in a Toronto courtroom next week.Below is a timeline of events leading to next week’s court hearing: April 14, 2015 ❚ Vaughan Integrity Commissioner Suzanne Craig tables a preliminary report laying out her initial findings from a four-month investigation into Di Biase’s behaviour at city hall trig-gered by a complaint from Di Biase’s longtime political rival and city hall watcher Richard Lorello.❚ Among Craig’s findings: the veteran politician and former mayor used intimidation and abusive language to pressure city staff who opposed his interference in the city’s tender-ing process to secure municipal projects for local construction firm, Maystar General Contractors. (Craig didn’t investigate Maystar and there’s nothing in her reports to indicate the company did anything wrong.)❚ Di Biase’s lawyer, Morris Manning, appeared before city councillors to halt the ethics probe and have the matter handed over to an “indepen-dent person,” but council rejected his request.

April 21, 2015 ❚ Craig brings forward her final 97-page report laying out further details about her probe and rec-ommending Di Biase be docked 90-days pay, the stiffest penalty allowed under the Municipal Act. ❚ Manning argues, unsuccessfully, that, among other things, the inves-tigation lacked “procedural fairness” as Di Biase wasn’t given the names of 32 people who made allega-tions against him so that he could adequately respond. ❚ Councillors vote unanimously to impose the 90-day pay suspension

April 30, 2015❚ The Vaughan Citizen breaks the news that York Regional Police’s Major Fraud Unit, in conjunction with the OPP, has launched a criminal investigation into Di Biase and is looking into a number of city contracts signed during his more than two decades in munici-pal politics including his time as mayor. ❚ The OPP subsequently takes charge of the investigation to avoid any hint of conflict of interest as Di Biase sits on regional council and votes on the police board budget. He’s also a past member of the police services board.

June 15, 2015 ❚ Manning, Di Biase’s lawyer, files an application with the Divisional Court in Toronto seeking a judicial review in order to squelch the integrity commissioner’s report and overturn the pay suspension imposed by city council

Tuesday May 17, Wednesday May 18 2016 ❚ The matter is to be heard in an Osgoode Hall courtroom starting at 10 a.m. both days

Motherhood is hard. But nothing can compare to the

warm hugs and lessons learned from a young child.

That’s the message from one mother to a new mom at a Mother’s Day event in Thornhill Sunday.

“Everyone tells you it’s hard,” said Thornhill resident Dina Taha. “You don’t understand how much until you are in the situation.”

Taha brought her son, Malik Omran, who will be turning two this summer, to the Bathurst Clark Resource library in Vaughan for the Mother’s Day tea party.

“Having children is a drastic change in your life and your rou-tine,” she said. “But it’s not perma-nent.”

While being a mom is a 24-hour job that doesn’t stop, for her Mother’s Day is the one day she remembers to be a mom and nothing else.

“It’s a time to enjoy motherhood,” she said.

Other days, she becomes the family cook, chauffeur and cleaning lady like countless mothers across Canada.

For Carmen Tay, a Thornhill

mom of two, Mother’s Day is extra special, since her first son, John Chua, was born two years ago on Mother’s Day.

“He was my Mother’s Day gift,” she said.

Tay, along with husband, Nicolas Chua, brought her son John and 5-month-old Mark Chua, to the library this morning to celebrate time together as a family.

“Motherhood is about putting the kids first,” she said. “You do what the kids want to do before you do what you want to do. It takes some getting used to.”

Moms-to-be are often told life will change once a child is brought into the world. And quite often moms are reminded of how hard it is.

But it’s the inherent life lessons that are unexpected.

“They taught me to slow down and look at things from there’s per-spective,” Tay said. “It could be look-ing at a worm or walking slowly through the park. This is how it’s going to be so enjoy it.”

For Taha, her son taught her to play again.

“I laugh more than I have before,” she said. “I’m enjoying toys again through him, watching as he grows, learns and becomes independent.”

The Thornhill home of Toronto Maple Leafs’ pros-pect Mitch Marner went up in flames last Thursday, causing an estimated $400,000 worth of damage.

“It’s scary, but at least every-one is OK,” Marner, who is playing in the OHL finals for the London Knights, told Sportsnet after viewing the footage on his phone.

York Regional Police and Vaughan Fire and Rescue Ser-vices received the call at 3:35 p.m. Thursday after neighbours called 911 reporting the fire, which had by then engulfed much of the Autumn Hill Bou-levard home’s garage.

The family is lucky not to have lost more, Vaughan Fire Chief Larry Bentley said.

“We almost lost the entire

roof,” he said. “Our guys did well.”

The family will lose many personal items to smoke dam-age, he said.

Two animals — a chocolate Labrador retriever and a cat, named Burbank and Winston, respectively — were saved by neighbours and emergency crews, Bentley said.

It was also neighbours who called father Paul Marner to

warn him while he was on his way to his son’s hockey game.

Bentley said he believes the cause was an “accident”, but didn’t to go into further details, noting the Fire Marshal was on site.

Mitch Marner, who recently turned 19, was selected fourth overall by the Maple Leafs last year. He recently claimed the OHL’s Most Outstanding Player award.

This isn’t the first time the iconic 4040 Steeles plaza in Woodbridge has been riddled with bullets.

York Regional Police responded to a shooting in the Vaughan plaza early Sunday morning.

The entire plaza, home to more than half a dozen bridal boutiques, wedding and cake shops and limo services, was barricaded off as investigators collected evidence Sunday afternoon.

Just before 1 a.m., a man in his 20s was shot outside La’Shish Bar & Grill in the plaza and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

This is the third shooting involv-ing patrons from the bar in less than a year.

“I feel like crying. It’s happened so many times,” said a local shop owner who did not want to be named out of fear.

“This is becoming like anoth-er Jane and Finch area,” she said through tears on the phone.

It was bullets this time, but most other mornings the parking lot is littered with liquor bottles, needles and condoms, she added.

“Come in the morning,” the shop owner said. “It’s a disaster. This is nonsense.”

The plaza was closed off to employees. Store owners were encouraging patrons to call ahead if they had appointments, needed to pick up party favours or who had bridal fittings.

Last year, a stray bullet went through a wall and into a neigh-bouring bridal boutique.

“My staff are scared to come in,” said the shop owner. “They are scared to go near the windows.”

The plaza has been a popular destination for brides-to-be shop-ping for wedding dresses, bonbon-erie, party favours or other special-ty gifts for close to three decades.

Former customers were shocked to hear about the shooting at the famous bridal destination.

“As someone who was lucky enough to find a dress a week before my wedding here, I am dev-astated to hear that such a kind family business had such an event take place,” said Veronica Carrier, who bought her wedding dress at a shop in the plaza two years ago.

Some shop owners have con-sidered moving further north, but rent is more expensive for smaller space, one merchant told The Citi-zen

Those who drive electric cars in Vaughan will soon be able to juice up their vehicles while kicking back and catch-ing up on some light reading or browsing the stacks for a copy of the latest bestseller.

A pair of Level 2 charg-ing stations, which can fully charge a vehicle in four to six hours, is being installed at the new the civic centre resource library on Major Macken-zie Drive, next door to city hall.

C i t y officials are hoping to roll t h e m out in time for the library’s grand opening in Septem-ber.

The provincial govern-ment drove the local initia-tive by flowing $17,500 in

funding to the city. That money is part of the

$20 million Queen’s Park is dishing out to create a net-work of nearly 500 electric vehicle charging stations across the province.

Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca, MPP for Vaughan, announced earlier this week the government is teaming up with 27 private and public sector partners to install charging stations in more than 250 locations

including along highways,

at busi-ness-es and c o n -

domini-u m s as well as in some public places.

The hope is that creating a network of charging sta-tions will relieve “range anxi-ety” some consumers feel about the distances electric vehicles can travel compared

to regular cars and trucks, he said.

While Vaughan scored a couple of Level 2 charg-ing stations, some locations will be outfitted with Level 3 charging stations — or Direct Current Fast Chargers — that can charge a vehicle to 80 per cent in 30 minutes, other locations will have both types.

This move comes the heels of increased incentives for electric car buyers with the province offering rebates of up to $14,000.

But those rebates are capped at $3,000 for vehicles priced between $75,000 and $150,000.

Vehicles costing more than $150,000 are not eligible for rebates.

There are an estimated 6,400 electric vehicles on Ontario roads, according to provincial officials.

Mackenzie Health Foun-dation has assembled a team of “prominent leaders in business, health care and the community” to spear-head the effort to raise $250 million, in large part, for Vaughan’s long-awaited hos-pital.

The foundation, which also raises funds to enhance care at Mackenzie Rich-mond Hill Hospital, unveiled the the so-called campaign cabinet for its $250-million Exceptional Care Belongs Here campaign earlier this week.

Greg Sorbara, former Lib-eral MPP for Vaughan and a former Ontario finance min-

ister, is leading the cabinet, which features several devel-opers as well as real estate professionals, construction union representatives, politi-cians and bankers.

“We are asking people to make a gift to something that will be a direct part of their lives, for the rest of their lives and for generations to come,” Sorbara said in a news release. “This cabinet will help to inspire the dona-

tions that will create last-ing legacies and transform health care in southwest York Region.”

❚ Magna Pledge

Magna International’s $10-million pledge, made last October, ranks as the top gift made to the campaign, so far. In recognition of that generous gift, the emergency department at the Macken-zie Vaughan Hospital will be

named Magna Emergency. The foundation expects to

announce additional pledges of $1 million or more in the near future.

A major portion of the funds generated by the $250-million campaign will go to cover the “local share,” which includes 10 per cent of con-struction costs for the Mack-enzie Vaughan Hospital as well as the majority of equip-ment and furniture costs.

On top of that, Vaughan taxpayers contributed $80 million toward purchasing and development of the land at Major Mackenzie Drive and Jane Street where the hospital will sit.

That money is being paid through a special levy expect-ed to remain on the property tax bill until at least 2021.

The exact cost of build-ing the hospital, and when its doors will open, is slated

to be announced in the fall, after the consortium charged with designing, building, financing and maintaining the facility is selected.

Some officials have sug-gested the price tag to build the proposed state-of-the-art, 350-bed hospital is in the range of $1 billion.

Up until now, the goal has been to have the hos-pital built and open in 2019.

Cheered on by more than a thousand schoolchildren who bashed thunder sticks and chanted “TFC”, Toronto FC II snapped a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Rich-mond Kickers in United Soccer League action yesterday after-noon.

The special school day game started at 11:30 a.m. at the Ontar-io Soccer Centre in Vaughan and drew a season high crowd of 1,222 in plus- 20C weather.

Substitute Sal Bernal, who came on midway through the second half scored the game’s only goal with just 15 minutes to play on a low drive from the top of the box that beat Kickers keeper Matt Turner. It was one of the few shots of the game for the home side.

TFC II coach Jason Bent said

he was pleased to get the three points and win for the first time at home in four tries this sea-son.

“It was huge for our confi-dence. We worked really really hard. Sometimes 1-0 victories are the sweetest because you end up suffering throughout the whole game. To get over that finish line was a great feeling,” Bent said.

He added the support of the

kids was appreciated. “It was definitely interesting

to see that many school kids and to kick off at 11:30. Hopefully we gave a good account of ourselves and they will be back.”

Woodbridge native Luca Uccello started in midfield for TFC II after coming on in the past two games as a sub and missing the beginning of the season with an injury. He played an hour before being subbed off.

“It’s good to be back after missing the start of the season. I’m just happy we got the win today for our fans and hopefully more to come,” he said.

TFC II now heads on the road for three straight games to Charlotte, Pittsburgh and Har-risburg before returning to the Soccer Centre for a Sunday, May 29 match with the Wilmington Hammerheads. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

COMMUNITY

Welcome to construction seasonBY LISA QUEEN

[email protected]

If Canada only has two seasons, winter and con-struction, then Happy Traffic Jam Time!

Road work will be tak-ing place across York Region this year, accord-ing to a recent presenta-tion by Salim Alibhai, the region’s director of capital planning and delivery in the transportation servic-es department.

The presentation only dealt with regional proj-ects and did not include any construction also tak-ing place on local roads or provincial highways.

Commuters better brace themselves for a whole lot of traffic woes, regional councillors warned.

“We’re going to be under construction this year, the whole of York Region,” Markham Coun-cillor Jack Heath said.

The region is invest-ing $2.4 billion on capital road, transit, bridges and intersection projects over 10 years to address the transportation needs of the growing region, trans-portation commissioner Daniel Kostopoulos said.

“Transportation con-tinues to be the top issue for our residents and this council has shown a lot of leadership and support in approving more funding for transportation capital improvements and capac-ity increases in the net-work than in any other term of council,” he said.

Of the 10-year, $2.4-billion transportation capital budget, the region is spending $700 million on transit buses, garages and terminals, not includ-ing funding spent on bus rapidways on Yonge Street, Davis Drive and Hwy. 7, Alibhai said.

The other $1.7 billion is earmarked for roads, bridges, intersections, illumination, mainte-nance yards and technol-ogy.

This year, the region will invest $112 million in new roads to accommo-date the region’s growth, Alibhai said.

York’s current popula-tion of almost 1.2 million will increase to almost 1.8 million by 2041.

SEVEN MAJOR REGIONAL PROJECTS

The growth construc-tion plan will include continued work on seven ongoing major contracts and three new contracts, including the $69-million widening of 2nd Conces-sion/Main Street North between Bristol Road and Queensville Sideroad; the $30-million widening of Leslie Street from Welling-ton Street to Mulock Drive in Aurora; the $5.1-million roundabout at Keele Street and Lloydtown/Aurora Road; the $86-million wid-ening of Major Macken-zie Drive from Pine Valley to Hwy. 400 in Vaughan; the $40.9-million widen-ing and redevelopment of Hwy. 7 from Town Cen-tre Boulevard to Sciber-ras Road in Markham; the $32.7-million recon-nection of Bathurst Street from Green Lane to one kilometre north of Morn-ing Sideroad; the $37-mil-lion widening of Bayview Avenue from Elgin Mills Road to Stouffville Road and 19th Avenue from Linda Margaret Crescent to Bayview in Richmond Hill; the $50.9-million midblock crossing of Hwy. 404 north of Hwy. 7 in Markham; and the $50.2-million widening of St. John’s Sideroad from Bay-view to Hwy. 404, includ-ing a structural rehabilita-tion required by the Min-istry of Transportation at the highway.

Two Thornhill residents were celebrating lottery wins last week.

Jeanette Switzer of Thorn-hill won the $100,000 top prize with Instant Crossword Tripler (game #1846).

She picked up her cheque from the OLG Prize Centre Fri-day and had purchased her lucky ticket at Cinema Conve-nience in Toronto.

Instant Crossword Tripler is available for $5 a play; odds of winning a prize are 1 in

3.70. Another lucky Thornhill

resident is Vajihollah Nobakht Ivoli, who won a $75,000 top prize with Instant Pac-Man Slots (game #1867).

Ivoli arrived at the Prize Centre last Thursday with his daughter by his side. Since he only speaks Persian, his daughter shared his story.

“My father scanned the ticket in the ticket checker and he realized there was some-thing unusual. He took the

ticket to the retailer and she confirmed he was a winner.”

He still didn’t realize he had a winning ticket until the store owner, who also speaks Per-sian, shared the good news with him.

Ivoli plans to purchase some property with a portion of the windfall and share his good fortune with his children and grandchildren.

His winning ticket was pur-chased at Kitchen Food Fair on Steeles Avenue in Thornhill.

I want to thank you for walking with me in the 2016 Mandarin MS Walk. By walking, you’ve

created awareness about multiple sclerosis which is much too common in Canada. For people

like my mother, who has had MS for 37 years, your fundraising really does help. With the support

of people like you who participate in the Mandarin MSWalk, I know we will end Canada’s disease.

Artist Elaine Hoffman presents her third exhibi-tion, Increments, May 12 through 15, at the J.E.H./Thoreau MacDonald House, 121 Centre St. in Thornhill.

Forty-five paintings will be on display at the his-toric home once occupied by a member of the Group of Seven painters.

Using abstract com-positions, the exhibition shows Hoffman’s exploration of the evoca-tive prin-ciples of colour and v i g n e t t e s that evoke emotions and sensations.

“The process of creating paintings is very seductive

for me,” Hoffman said.

“Using bold shapes and sat-urated colours, I feel a strong

impulse to cap-ture illusive emo-

tions... Inspired by my personal experiences

as a mother, partner, art educator and communi-ty member, my abstrac-tions offer a multi-layered engagement ranging from a purely visual experience into a deep philosophical reflection.”

Hoffman studied studio art at York University and the University of Guelph and worked for 17 years

in education at the McMi-chael Canadian Art Collec-tion in Kleinburg.

A portion of the sales will be donated to Sun-nybrook Health Sciences Centre’s Odette Cancer Centre, in memory of Lor-raine Waldman, a friend and supporter of the art-ist.

The opening reception

is Thursday, May 12, from 7 to 10 p.m. The show con-tinues Friday, noon to 8 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Hoffman’s third exhibition on display until Sunday
