vOptimizer Pro is the recognized industry standard VM optimization solution. vOptimizer Pro reduces a virtual machine's virtual hard drive to the smallest size possible and also optimizes Window and Linux guest operating systems for speed and performance.

About vOptimizer ProvOptimizer Pro is a Windows and Linux VM optimization and storage reclamation solution that helps to manage VM sprawl and growing enterprise storage costs. It also maximizes the guest OS performance of every running VM.

The main features of vOptimizer Pro are:

• Enabling the ESX/ESXi datastores space reclamation for Windows and Linux based VMs.

• Improving I/O performance of ESX/ESXi servers’ datastores by aligning partitions to specified value.

• Improving VM performance and reducing Windows footprint by periodic deletion of selected files and services.

vOptimizer Pro performs partition adjustment of any ESX/ESXi based VM. The

adjustment includes the following processes:

• Automated mounting of offline VMs.

• Inspection of VM file system and guest OS.

• VM partitions resizing.

This chapter outlines the hardware and software requirements for installing vOptimizer Pro and the supported platforms for optimization.

Installation RequirementsThe resource requirements to run vOptimizer Pro can vary according to the following factors:

• The number and size of VMs being optimized.

• The number of concurrent optimization jobs.

To perform large scale production implementation, conduct a proper scoping and sizing exercise. Your machine must match the hardware requirements described below.

Resource RequirementsvOptimizer Pro is a standalone application that requires no external database or infrastructure components. The resource requirements for the vOptimizer Pro application are:

• CPU: 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) processor.

• RAM: 1 GB of system memory.

• Storage: At least 4 GB free hard disk space.

• Graphics: At least 1024x768 video resolution.

Software RequirementsvOptimizer Pro requires a physical or virtual machine running one of the following operating systems. All service pack levels are supported.

• Windows Server 2008 (x86, x64)

• Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64)

• Windows Server 2003 (x86, x64)

• Windows 7 (x86, x64)

• Windows Vista Business or Ultimate (x86, x64)

• Windows XP Professional (x86, x64)

Note vOptimizer Pro does not work properly if installed on a 64-bit virtual machine in ESX3.0.X.There is no issue for ESX3.5, ESX4.0 or ESX 4.1.

System Requirements 13 Supported Platforms

vOptimizer Pro requires Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 and 4.0. You can confirm that you have .NET Framework installed by accessing Start>Add or Remove Programs. You can install .NET Framework v2.0 and v4.0 through Internet Explorer>Tools>Windows Update. Alternately, you can download it from www.microsoft.com.

Note When additional required components are downloaded and installed during the installation process, you will be prompted to restart your machine.

Note To optimize VMs using the Boot image strategy, make sure that TCP port 10425 is open on your client machine (where vOptimizer Pro is installed).

Supported PlatformsvOptimizer Pro supports the following versions of VMware ESX Server:

• VMWare ESX(i) Server 4.1

• VMWare ESX(i) Server 4.0

• VMware ESX(i) Server 3.5 Update 3

• VMware ESX(i) Server 3.5 Update 2

Note When trying to run 32-bit applications in a 64-bit Windows guest operating systems, you may receive an exception. Guest OS Configuration RequirementsvOptimizer Pro communicates with target VMs using their IP address. In addition, vOptimizer Pro uses VMware Tools to perform a set of optimization and resize processes. That is why VMware Tools must be installed and running on every target VM.

Caution vOptimizer Pro will not be able to optimize or resize VMs without these configurations.

VMware Tools installedVMware Tools is a utilities suite that enhances the VM performance on a guest operating system. VMware Tools must be installed and running on target VMs, otherwise, vOptimizer Pro will not be able to optimize or resize a VM.

Connected NICTo connect VM to a physical network, virtual network card (vNIC) must be connected and mapped to a vSwitch and at least one physical network adapter.

Any VM to be optimized should be configured so that its eth0 interface (ethernet interface) is active at the boot time. vOptimizer Pro is unable to optimize improperly configured VMs.

Supported Network AdaptersThe following network adapters are supported:

• E1000

• Flexible

• Vmxnet 2

• Vmxnet 3

Supported Disk ControllersThe following SCSI disk controllers are supported:

• BusLogic Parallel

• LSI Logic Parallel

• LSI Logic SAS

• VMware Paravirtual

DHCP supportTo optimize all Linux VMs and Windows VMs via Boot Image strategy, the DHCP services must be available on the VM network.

System Requirements 17 Guest OS Configuration Requirements

VM NamesAvoid using special characters in VM names shown in the figure below, otherwise it can cause problems during VMDK resizing:

Free Space Requirements for Guest OSTo run system optimization, vOptimizer Pro needs at least 6.5 MB of free space on a guest OS.

To run resize optimization, vOptimizer Pro needs at least 4 MB of free space on a guest OS.

To run both system and resize optimization, vOptimizer Pro needs at least 6.5 MB of free space on a guest OS.

Space and Alignment scanning do not require free space on a guest OS.

Windows Guest OS Specific RequirementsThe following requirements must be met on the Windows OS:

• File and printer sharing should be turned on.

• The account used by vOptimizer Pro must be added to the Administrators group.

• Administrators group must have to access computer from network.

• Network access for local accounts must be Classic - Local users authenticate as themselves.

• Each logical disk (partition) to be optimized must have drive letter assigned.

Linux Guest OS Specific RequirementsThe following requirement should be met on the Linux VMs that you wish to optimize

by using vOptimizer Pro:

• The SSH daemon must be running on the source system.

• PermitRootLogin must be enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, if the root user is to be used to login to the source system.

• PasswordAuthentication must be enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

• ChallengeResponseAuthentication must be set to No.

Note If /etc/ssh/sshd_config was reconfigured, SSH daemon should be restarted. If /etc/ssh/sshd_config already contains correct settings – restart is not required. To restart SSH daemon, use the following command: /etc/init.d/sshd restart.

• SSH must be enabled in firewall.

• VMware Tools should be installed on the source system. It is recommended to

• test VM availability via SSH after configuring, before first resize.

In addition to that vOptimizer Pro requires a number of Linux components to be installed on Linux VMs being optimized. If you receive error messages during Linux optimization (like Failed to create and configure RAM disk within optimizing virtual machine), check whether all required components are installed. To do so:

1 Select Support from the Help menu.

2 Click Prepare Log Files.

3 Follow the prompted path to the log file and verify the list for the missing components.

System Requirements 19 Guest OS Configuration Requirements

UAC Settings for Windows Guest OSIn Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008, User Account Control (UAC) must be configured. Select one of the following options:

• Disable UAC.

• Use built-in user administrator.

• If you want to use custom user credentials, configure UAC setting User Account Control: Behavior of elevation prompts for administrators in Admin Approval Mode to Elevate without prompting for the vOptimizer Pro user credentials.

Ports SettingsMake sure that the following ports are open in the firewall used with your VMs:

1 Port 445 must be open for Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).

2 Ports 135-139 must be open for Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

3 Port 22 must be open for SSH connection to Linux VMs.

Make sure that the following ports are open in the ESX host (for COS optimization strategy):

1 SMTP agent connection port (default value: 422).

2 Port 22 must be open for SSH connection.

WMI ConfigurationThese requirements are applied to Windows virtual machines only.

1 Make sure your domain account belongs to the Administrators group.

2 Click Administrative tools -> Server Manager -> Configuration -> WMI Control.

3 Right-click to open WMI Control Properties -> Security tab.

4 Select Root and click the Security button.

5 Make sure that the Administrators and the Network Service groups have all permissions enabled.

6 Enable WMI via Firewall via the following command: netsh firewall set service RemoteAdmin enable

7 Make sure that RPC, WMI and DCOM services are running.

The following trees and nodes are required for vOptimizer Pro:

Note if you are not sure how to configure WMI, use the default settings or ask your System Administrator.

Supported File SystemsThe following Linux file systems are supported:

• EXT2

• EXT3

• EXT4

The following Windows file systems are supported:

• NTFS

Note It is not recommended to optimize a VM that is heavily fragmented. We recommend to run the defrag operation prior to optimization.

System Requirements 21 Unsupported Configurations

Unsupported ConfigurationsThere are several configurations, for which vOptimizer Pro’s resizing operations are not supported. These configurations are:

• Operations with VM containing both dynamic and basic disks are limited. vOptimizer does not support the resizing and aligning dynamic disks feature.

• GPT (GUID Partition Table), IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), LVM (Logical Volume Manager) disks are not supported.

• vOptimizer denies optimization of VMs that contain at least one RDM (Raw Device Mapping) disk.

• vOptimizer Pro has restricted support for VMDKs with enabled CBT. For more information, see “CBT limitations” on page 21.

• vOptimizer Pro has restricted support for VMDK v3 as 3rd version means enabled CBT. For more information, see “CBT limitations” on page 21.

• vOptimizer neither reports on or optimizes logical disks (partitions) that do not have driver letter (for Windows) or mount point (for Linux) assigned.

vOptimizer Pro cannot perform optimization with:

• Virtual machines that are turned off.

• Virtual machines that contain snapshots.

Caution This list should not be considered as exhaustive.

CBT limitationsCBT is a new feature in vSphere that can keep track of the changed virtual disk blocks. To optimize VM where CBT is enabled, use the Boot image optimization strategy.

Note vOptimizer Pro is unable to detect all CBT-enabled VMDK files (or unsupported VMDK versions) unless VM is added to a Project and user clicks on that VM to gather info.

Installing vOptimizer Pro

This section guides you through the process of installing vOptimizer Pro using the vOptimizer Pro installer.

Preparing to InstallTo install vOptimizer Pro, you will need:

• A physical or virtual machine to host the vOptimizer Pro installation.

• Administrator access to the machine on which vOptimizer Pro will be installed.

Installing a New Version of vOptimizer ProInstallation of vOptimizer Pro is the same for all platforms. The procedure below assumes that you have vOptimizer Pro downloaded from the Quest website.

By default, vOptimizer Pro is installed with the auto-trial license. To install a commercial license, you will need to activate it. For more information, see “Activating vOptimizer Pro” on page 31.

To install vOptimizer Pro:

Step 1: Extracting FileThe vOptimizer Pro installer prompts you to extract the setup.exe and vOptimizer.msi.

1 Click Unzip to accept the default directory.

or

Click Browse and select a different location. Click Unzip

After the extraction completes, the Welcome to the vOptimizer Pro Setup Wizard dialog box appears.

Note vOptimizer Pro may require reboot during the installation process. The self-extracting archive should be unpacked to a folder, which is not cleaned after reboot.

Step 2: Welcome ScreenThe Welcome to the vOptimizer Pro Setup Wizard dialog box indicates that the installation process is started:

1 Click Next.

Step 3: License Agreement1 Read the License Agreement statement, and accept or decline its terms and

conditions.

2 If you select I Agree, click Next

Step 4: Installation Folder1 Select the location where you want to install vOptimizer Pro. You can accept the

default location C:\Program Files\Quest Software\vOptimizer Pro or click Browse to specify another location.

2 If necessary, click Check Free Space to see the amount of free space available on the local machine, and how much space is required to install vOptimizer Pro.

3 Click Next.

Step 5: Confirm Installation1 Click Next to install vOptimizer Pro.

The installation process may take several minutes.

Step 6: CompleteWhen installation is complete. Click Finish to exit the installer.

Updating vOptimizer ProTo update the earlier version of vOptimizer Pro installed on your computer, do the following:

1 Make sure that there is no optimization running.

2 Close vOptimizer Pro.

3 Run installation.

4 Install the application.

5 The Installation Wizard will prompt you to convert the settings. Confirm the conversion.

6 Update your license. For more information, see “Activating vOptimizer Pro” on page 31.

To upgrade vOptimizer Pro from version 3.1.1 to a newer version, do the following:

1 Make sure that there is no optimization running.

2 Close vOptimizer Pro.

3 Run installation.

4 Install the application.

5 All required settings will be converted automatically.

Note When you upgrade vOptimizer Pro 3.x to a later version, the license activation is preserved. You do not need to reactivate it. For more information, see “Activating vOptimizer Pro” on page 31.

Installing vOptimizer Pro 27 Uninstalling vOptimizer Pro

Uninstalling vOptimizer ProUninstalling vOptimizer Pro is a utilizing of the application’s installer.

To remove vOptimizer Pro:

Step 1: vOptimizer Pro Installer1 Click Start>Programs> Quest Software > vOptimizer Pro > Uninstall

vOptimizer Pro

The Quest® vOptimizer Pro Setup Wizard is displayed.

2 Select Remove Quest® vOptimizer Pro.

3 Click Next.

Step 2: vOptimizer Pro DatabasevOptimizer Pro maintains the Cost Statistics database. You are prompted to choose whether to keep or delete this database.

1 If you are going to reinstall vOptimizer Pro, click Yes.

This will save the vOptimizer Pro database for future installations.

or

If you are not going to reinstall vOptimizer Pro, click No. Caution This will permanently delete the Cost Statistics database.

2 The removal is completed, Click Finish.

Starting vOptimizer ProThe instructions in this chapter assume that you have vOptimizer Pro installed on your machine. For more information, see “Installing a New Version of vOptimizer Pro” on page 24.

You can access vOptimizer Pro through the Start menu:

• Click Start>Programs> Quest Software > vOptimizer Pro > vOptimizer Pro

Note The vOptimizer Pro User Guide and online help files can be accessed from the same location.

vOptimizer Pro ServiceThe vOptimizer Pro Service must be running for vOptimizer Pro proper work.

To verify the Service is running:

1 From the Start menu, right-click My Computer.

2 Click Manage.

3 Go to Services and Application to find vOptimizer Pro Services.

If the vOptimizer Pro Service is running, the service Status will be Started column.

or

If the vOptimizer Pro Service is stopped, select the service and click Start.

Licenses and Activation

License TypesThere are the following types of licenses:

• Auto-trial license, included by default to the installation package. With this license you can perform five optimizations. The trial period is 60 days.

• Per-socket license allows optimization on a certain number of CPUs on VirtualCenter/ESX Server hosts.

• Trial license (per-optimization) restricts optimization count. Must be applied prior to expiration of the current trial license.

Activating vOptimizer ProThe licensing procedure in vOptimizer Pro 3.x differs from the earlier versions. In vOptimizer Pro 2.x, you activate licenses by entering the License key. In vOptimizer Pro 3.x, you have to specify the path to the license file instead of entering the License key. To receive the license file, please contact the Support team.

Note If you upgrade vOptimizer Pro 2.x to 3.x version, you will need to contact the Support team to receive a new license file. If a copy of vOptimizer Pro 3.x is already installed on your machine, your license will be preserved.

To activate vOptimizer Pro:

1 Select Activation from the Help menu. The Activation Wizard appears.

2 Click Next.

3 Specify the License file location, or press to browse the file.

4 Click Next and complete the Wizard steps to activate vOptimizer Pro.

Installed LicensesTo check the licenses that are currently installed with your copy of vOptimizer Pro, do the following:

1 Select About from the Help menu.

2 Click View license details.

The list of installed licenses with the number of available optimizations will be displayed.
