University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Vice Chancellor for Advancement

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth) seeks a talented, energetic advancement executive to join its leadership team in the role of Vice Chancellor for Advancement. Reporting to the

Chancellor, the vice chancellor serves on the President’s Council and works across the institution to

develop and implement advancement strategies and programs that support the university’s mission and priorities.

Distinguished by personalized teaching, innovative research, and full engagement in regional economic,

social, and cultural development, UMass Dartmouth is a Tier One national research university located in

Southeastern Massachusetts. The university has an enrollment of nearly 9,000 students in more than 50 undergraduate majors and more than 40 graduate programs, including 12 at the doctoral level and over

53,000 alumni/ae. Its 710-acre suburban main campus is augmented by a new state-of-the-art marine research facility in New Bedford, the Commonwealth’s only public law school, and a robust offering of

highly ranked on-line programs. UMass Dartmouth is part of the five-campus UMass System which is

governed by a President and a 22-member Board of Trustees.

UMass Dartmouth has embarked on a new era of vision, action, and success under the leadership of its new Chancellor, Robert Johnson Ph.D., who began his tenure on July 1, 2017. As the university

approaches its 125th anniversary in 2020, the community will be working together to create an aspirational shared vision for the university that includes key priorities for investment and that fuels the

advancement effort. The new Vice Chancellor for Advancement is expected to join and lead these and

other efforts to position the university effectively among alumni, friends, and potential donors who can be partners in the university’s success. The Vice Chancellor will have broad authority to build and shape the

advancement program to support the university’s ambitions. The Vice Chancellor will also partner with the Chancellor and other key individuals to manage and cultivate a portfolio of leadership and principal

gift prospects.

The University seeks candidates with a strong track record in fundraising, leadership and management experience, ability to utilize data analytics and metrics in planning and monitoring results, and the natural ability to forge and cultivate effective relationships with a wide range of individuals. For more information about the position, please visit www.umassd.edu.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. Review of applications has begun and will continue until the position is filled, with an anticipated appointment date of February 1, 2018. Candidates shouldprovide a resume, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements of the position, and the names and contact information of five references. References will not be contacted without prior knowledge and approval of candidates.

UMass Dartmouth: Priorities Create and execute a plan for resource development With the appointment of a new Chancellor and the university’s 125th anniversary approaching in 2020, the University is launching a new strategic visioning and planning initiative to capitalize on and enhance UMass Dartmouth’s unique strengths as a Tier One public research university. The new Vice Chancellor will find an energized, optimistic campus ready to collaborate on executing a new advancement plan that fits the institution’s rich history and mission, builds capacity and supports its vision and strategic priorities. The plan must include strategies and tactics for significantly increasing fund-raising results and ultimately, a capital campaign.

Engage strategic partners UMass Dartmouth’s unique niche and role in the state and in the UMass System provides a solid platform for establishing a compelling message to potential donors and partners in its success. As the University moves forward with its strategic plan, the University will be developing a complementary plan for raising visibility and awareness locally, regionally and nationally. On campus, collective, collaborative thinking is highly valued, so the new Vice Chancellor can expect to find ready participants in fundraising efforts. Central to this enterprise will be leadership in the establishment of an internal campus culture that optimizes the environment for success. Externally, multiple opportunities exist with the institutions multiple volunteer boards and groups, corporate, non-profit, and government partners in the region, and staff and volunteers at the UMass System level where a number of opportunities exist to partner with the UMass Foundation and other campuses to create multi-campus approaches to strategic donors.

Build the advancement infrastructure In anticipation of the new Vice Chancellor’s appointment, the advancement office is undergoing a thorough assessment that will result in a blueprint for staffing, training, funding, and program development. Efforts are currently underway to build research capacity, instill data analytics and appropriate metrics for measuring results, strengthen alumni engagement and donor relations programs and continue developing best practices across the fundraising teams. The new Vice Chancellor will be expected to continue these efforts as well as to apply her or his own analysis and ideas for strengthening the team’s ability to reach higher performance levels.

Raise major and principal gifts The Vice Chancellor must be a role model for effective principal and major gift fund raising, a strong university citizen, and a leader dedicated to educating the campus about the importance of philanthropy. He/she will create opportunities to engage students, parents, staff, faculty and the community in fundraising, and through these efforts, will elicit their collective action as donors, participants and active promoters of the cause for support. No asset of any advancement program surpasses the importance of the chief executive. Chancellor Robert Johnson is an experienced leader and deeply dedicated to success in institutional advancement – particularly as measured by fundraising success. He seeks a partner with the strategic insight and creativity to position him effectively for that success. He has already begun to build relationships with the institution’s key supporters and prospects.

The Vice Chancellor must be able to assimilate quickly and contribute to the university’s leadership culture, characterized by strategic collective thinking, collaboration and data based decisions. Ability to develop and execute an institution-wide strategic advancement plan that aligns with university priorities, to engage leadership, staff, and volunteers in carrying out the plan, to ensure effective and timely follow through, and, ultimately, to improve fund-raising results is essential. A bachelor’s degree and evidence of success leading and managing teams are required. In addition, the Vice Chancellor should demonstrate:
