Meet Fina Liga: Retired Restaurateur & New ResidentGrowing up in rural Sicily, FinaManzella first met her husband,Antonio Liga, when they were chil-dren living in neighboring houses.A4er falling in love, ge5ing marriedand starting a family, they followedFina’s parents and siblings andmoved to downstate Illinois.

The close-knit group shared a passionfor authentic Italian cuisine and in1964, Fina’s father and brothersopened Manzella’s Italian PatioRestaurant in Champaign, Illinois.

The restaurant was an instant hitwith students and professors at theUniversity of Illinois, and is still

thriving today. “A few years a4erManzella’s opened, my husbandand I decided to start a secondrestaurant on our own in nearbyTuscola,” Fina explains. “We namedit Liga’s Steak & Pasta House.”

Fina, Antonio and their 3 childrentook tremendous pride in Liga’sand were hands-on with everyaspect of the business. “We’dwake up before dawn and usuallyworked 7 days a week, but it was alot of fun,” recalls Fina. “We grewvery close with our customers andthe City of Tuscola even named astreet after me!”

A4er selling Liga’s in 2004, Fina andAntonio enjoyed visiting their 10grandchildren and vacationingabroad, especially in Italy.

When Antonio passed away in Janu-ary 2015, Fina moved into an apart-ment complex in Glenview to becloser to family. “I didn’t like thebuilding because it was so quietand lonely. I wanted to be aroundother people so after a couple

months, I began searching for alively retirement community.”

Fina visited Chestnut Square atThe Glen and immediately knewshe had found the right place. InDecember 2015, she moved intoher new 1-bedroom residence.“I’ve made so many new friendshere,” Fina exclaims. “I love beingbusy every day and I never miss anexercise class…it keeps me young.Plus, now I can let someone elseworry about dinner!”

RenovationsUpdate

As Team USA celebrated its historicmedal count at the 2016 Rio Games, the residents of Chestnut Square atThe Glen were joining in on the funduring their very own “ChestnutOlympics!”

From August 15—19, our enthusi-astic athletes showcased theirskills in putting, bags, ping pongand billiards.

When the games concluded, theGlenview senior living community

enjoyed a festive party and full medalceremony for the 4 contests.

Congratulations to all who partici-pated, especially those who earned aChestnut gold, silver or bronze!

As Bethany begins its new fiscal year,we thank residents, volunteers, donors, and others who share in ourresponse to the Call To Care. In thepast twelve months, your gi4s of time, talent and treasure have enlivenedour mission and helped us providemedical, residential, spiritual, andsocial services for adults of all ages.

The Good Samaritan Program is aspecial component of our ministry, alifeline for neglected, impoverished,mentally-ill, and homeless adults.Active at both Glenview andChicago campuses, it also reachespeople at-risk in the larger commu-nity, and assists employees facingpersonal crises, such as house fires, domestic abuse and burglaries.

Last year the Program helped morethan 600 residents, patients and staff, and even a partial list of how it bene-fits our neighbors in need is inspiring:

• Clothed 100 Methodist Hospitalpatients who arrived without shoes, shirts and coats

• Created a simple home for an 80-year-old man evicted from his building

• Donated new uniforms to an em-ployee whose basement apartmentwas flooded

• Partnered with a local food pantryto serve 400 hungry families

• Maintained below-market-ratecaregiver services for 90 residents

• Subsidized rental costs for 35residents with very limited incomes

• Provided almost $1 million ofinpatient charity care

Bethany is commi5ed to continuing its127-year-long tradition of understand-ing and meeting the health and housingneeds of our community. The demandfor our quality programs is growingdramatically as funding from govern-ment and private sources is slashed.

More than 50% of our clients arefinancially vulnerable, and it isincreasingly difficult for them to findservices elsewhere. Through wisestewardship, we will continue theGood Samaritan Program’s vital rolein addressing their physical, socialand spiritual well-being.

During this new fiscal year, Bethanywill provide updates as we assess com-munity needs, establish new programs, and collaborate with other non-profitorganizations to enhance care options.Meanwhile, I invite you to join me onOctober 23 at the annual Bethany Fam-ily celebration. Read more about it inthe cover article, and plan to celebratethe Program and honor our specialcommunity-service partners.

Peace,

Stephen Dahl
