As an experienced teacher, I cannot emphasise enough the importance of reading regularly with your child at home. This means that ideally your child will sit with a parent every day for at least 10 minutes and share a picture book, read to you, be read to, or even just discuss the book they are reading. Sharing reading with your child daily develops your child’s vocabulary and will give them a real boost! It is never too late to start.
Below is a list of highly recommended books for 9-12 year olds. Clearly some children in year 5 will not be ready for some of these yet, and some may even wish to read more advanced books.
