Quick Facts• Viruses are not living things• Viruses don’t have their own

kingdom• Viruses kill their host cells• There are over 800 viruses known

to man• Virus’ are named by the disease

they cause• Many famous viruses are HIV,

Influenza, and E. coli T4 Virus

Replication

• The Virus needs a host cell to replicate and exist

• There are two different cycles, the Lytic Cell and Lysogenic Cell

• The five steps are absorption, entry, replication, assembly, and release

Steps of Replication

Structure• Has an inner core of nucleic

acid containing an DNA or RNA (their genetic material)

• Has an outer coat of protein called a capsid

• Some viruses have an additional layer surrounding the capsids called an envelope

• The arrangement of the proteins in the capsids determines the virus’ shape

Feeding and Obtaining Energy• Viruses do not feed• Viruses do not convert

energy• Viruses operate by

reacting to elements
