The ThemesThe symposium will include presentations on organic synthesis, catalysis, computational chemistry, medicinal chemistry, sustainable chemistry and chemistry at the interface to biology.

The AimThe aim of the Torkil Holm Symposium is to bring together world-leading experts, from both academia and industry, to present a broad range of topics within the fi eld of chemical science.

Dr. phil Torkil HolmDr. phil Torkil Holm is a distinguished emeritus in organic chemistry at the Technical University of Denmark.

The Danish Academy of Technical SciencesSince the fi rst symposium in 2000, ATV has structu-red these symposia which are today regarded as being among the world’s most infl uential. ATV is a private, independent institution, its mission being to promote technological and scientifi c research and to ensure the application of research results to further the creation of value and welfare in the Danish society.

The Torkil Holm PrizeDuring the symposium the Torkil Holm Research Award for Chemistry will be awarded. The prize will be awarded to a younger researcher, who has already estab-lished his or her credentials as an independent investiga-tor in any area of chemical science and who shows great promise for further scientifi c development. Candidates from Danish academia, private research institutions and industry are all eligible for the prize.

NetworkingThe Torkil Holm Symposium provides an excellent en-vironment for networking with some of the best in the chemistry fi eld. This is further promoted by scientifi c and social gathering in appropriate breaks for discussion including seated lunch breaks and a symposium dinner.

THE SPEAKERS

Professor Robert S. LangerMassachusetts Institute of TechnologyProf. Langer is the David H. Koch Institute Professor. He has written more than 1,200 articles. He has over 800 issued and pending patents worldwide which have been licensed to over 250 companies. He is the most cited engineer in history. Prof. Langer has re-ceived over 210 major awards including the 2008 Millennium Prize, the 2012 Priestley Medal and the 2013 Wolf Prize. He is the also the only engineer to receive the Gaird-ner Foundation International Award.

Chief Bioscientist John Piece, BPDr. Pierce is Chief Bioscientist at BP and responsible for developing strategies as to the application of biosciences to BP world-wide. Dr. Pierce has always focused on the integration of biology with chemistry, engi-neering, and material sciences. Dr. Pierce was a founding member of the Society of Biological Engineering and currently serves on the Global Agenda Council for Emerg-ing Technologies of the World Economic Forum and the World Council on Industrial Biotechnology.

Professor Helma WennemersETH ZürichProf. Wennemers has since 2011 been professor of Organic Chemistry at ETH Zurich where she focuses on the development of small molecules for functions that are fulfi lled in nature by large macromolecules. This involves the development of asymmetric catalysts, bioinspired mate-rials, cell penetrating compounds, and templates for the controlled formation of metal nanopar-ticles. Her research was recognized with several awards including the „Leonidas Zervas Award“.

Professor David R. LiuHarvard University and HHMIProf. Liu’s research integrates chemistry and evolution to program and illuminate biology. Through the development and application of DNA-templated synthesis, his group has discovered bioactive small molecules and new chemical reactions. His group has developed phage-assisted continu-ous evolution (PACE) that enables proteins to evolve continuously in the laboratory, supercharged proteins as a platform for the delivery of macromolecules, and methods to profi le and improve genome engineering tools.

Professor Scott A. SnyderThe Scripps Research InstituteProfessor Scott Snyder began his career at Columbia University in 2006, rising to the rank of Associate Professor before moving to the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute. His group focuses on natural product synthesis. Recent awards include a Bristol-Myers Squibb Unrestricted Grant, a DuPont Young Professor Award, and the 2012 Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society.

Professor K.C. NicolaouRice UniversityProfessor K.C. Nicolaou was born in Cyprus, studied chemistry at the University of London, then moved to the USA where he later on ac-cepted joint appointments at the University of California San Diego (Professor of Chemistry) and The Scripps Research Institute (Chair-man of the Department of Chemistry). In 2013, Prof. Nicolaou has accepted the position of Harry C. and Olga K. Wiess Professor of Chemistry at Rice University.

Professor Herbert WaldmannMax Planck Institute of Molecular PsysiologyProfessor Herbert Waldmann has since 1999 headed the Department of Chemical Biology at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiol-ogy and, concurrently, has also held the position of professor of biochemistry at the Technische Universität Dortmund. He has been awarded numerous academic distinctions for his work, including the Emil Fischer Medal and the Max Bergmann Medal.

Chief Scientist Benny Bang-Andersen, H. Lundbeck A/SDr. Benny Bang-Andersen received his Ph.D. from the University of Copenhagen in 1996. He is now Chief Scientist at H. Lundbeck A/S. His research fi eld is medicinal chem-istry and drug discovery in general, and his research activities have resulted in more than 80 peer reviewed articles and U.S. patent applications, as well as the nomination of several drug candidates of which Brintel-lix (vortioxetine, Lu AA21004) is the most notable.

Professor Paul R. HansonUniversity of KansasProf. Hanson has specialized in synthetic methods, natural product synthesis, transi-tion metal-catalyzed methods, asymmetric methods, S- and P-heterocycles, immobilized reagent development, drug discovery and delivery, and chemical methods for library development. He focuses on the utilization of transition metal-catalyzed methods in order to produce new heterocycles contain-ing sulfur and phosphorus that exhibit both biological and synthetic utility.

Professor Dr. Beat ErnstUniversity of BaselProfessor Dr. Ernst’ research interests are the chemical and enzymatic synthesis of oligosaccharides and mimetics thereof, the investigation of carbohydrate/protein inter-actions by NMR, surface plasmon resonance, microcalorimetry, X-ray crystallography, and molecular modeling. In 1991, Prof. Dr. Ernst was awarded with the Werner-Prize of the New Swiss Chemical Society, promoted to CIBA-Fellow in 1993, and, in 2003, awarded with the MedidaPrix.

Professor Kendall N. HoukUniversity of CaliforniaProfessor Kendall N. Houk is an authority on theoretical and computational organic chemistry, and his group is involved in developments of rules to understand reactiv-ity, computer modeling of complex organic reactions, and experimental tests of the predictions of theory. His awards and honors include the Saul Winstein Chair in Organic Chemistry at UCLA, the ACS Arthur C. Cope Award, and the RSC Robert Robinson Award in 2012.

Professor Reza GhadiriThe Scripps Research InstituteProf. Ghadiri focuses on a multidisciplinary research effort that uses disciplines ranging from synthetic organic and peptide chemistry to materials science and recombinant DNA technology to develop novel methods for the rational design and construction of functional biomaterial-based structures. The goal is to provide novel applications in the fi eld of mo-lecular and system engineering and to advance understanding of living chemical processes.

Professor Knud J. JensenUniversity of CopenhagenProf. Jensen’s research is at the interface be-tween synthetic chemistry, biology, biophysics, medicinal chemistry and nanobioscience. A starting point is often new synthetic meth-odology, including reagents for solid-phase synthesis and for chemoselective chemistry on carbohydrates, peptides and proteins. Examples include the use of abiotic ligands to control the quaternary architecture of proteins, and new tools for glyconanotechnology. He received the 2012 Leonidas Zervas award.
