Job responsibilities include (a) Teaching graduate seminars and undergraduate courses in Comparative Politics, Comparative Public Administration, Democratization, African Politics, International Human Rights, and Social Science Research Methods (b) Conducting original research: my current interests include processes of political regime change (especially democratization), state-society relations, and mass political attitudes in new democracies (c) Serving on advisory, administrative, and search committees in the University, College of Social Science, Department of Political Science, African Studies Center, and the Center for the Advanced Study of International Development, and (d) Supervising graduate research, primarily for students interested in democratization and international development.

Concurrent Position (2008-present) Senior Advisor, Afrobarometer(2006-2007) Executive Director, Afrobarometer

(1999-2005) Co-Founder and Co-Director, Afrobarometer

The Afrobarometer is a state-of-the-art survey research instrument that measures the social, political and economic atmosphere in Africa. Afrobarometer surveys are conducted in over thirty African countries and are repeated on a regular cycle. Because the instrument asks a standard set of questions, countries can be systematically compared and trends in public attitudes can be tracked over time. Surveys are conducted by national partner institutions in each African country, which together comprise the Afrobarometer Network. For eight years I directed the Network’s activities – including survey research, capacity building, academic publication, and policy outreach.

Visiting Position (2006) Visiting Fellow, Nuffield College, Oxford University

The responsibilities of this appointment included research on comparative and African politics and advising doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows.
