Blount et al (1997) recently showed that folate deficiency can cause a massive incorporation of uracil into human DNA, hence leading to chromosome breaks.
Another study by Kim et al (1997) suggested that folate deficiency induces DNA strand breaks and hypomethylation within the p53 gene.
