Q. Tell us about MGE’s business role in the UAE.
A. Middle East General Enterprises (MGE) is a diversified Holding Company covering a variety of business sectors including logistics, industry, real estate and investments. In terms of U.S. businesses, we currently sponsor DHL, and we are excited about our new growth sectors in aerospace, defense and events. With offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, MGE has created a platform for international companies to grow business in the United Arab Emirates and the wider Middle East region. MGE has operated for over three decades since its creation in 1982. It is a family managed business supported by a diverse team of dedicated professionals. MGE focuses on long term strategic partnerships with international companies to develop new businesses or increase the footprint of current businesses in the region. www.mgeuae.com
Q. What are the core values of MGE?
A. Coming into a business relationship, we truly believe in long term partnerships. We are not interested in short term gains or benefits. Our core values are centered on transparency, open communication and trust. We employ these values to every aspect of our business. We have the flexibility to cater to all our partner’s needs, whether large scale or small, and this translates to our core values: transparency in sharing needs and issues; open communication in creating a dialogue; and trust in each other to reach a solution and outcome.
Q. How did you get your start with MGE?
A. I started my work with a common vision that I and the Vice Chairman, Mr. Saeed Al Ghanim, shared. Mr. Ghanim sees the UAE with great optimism and opportunity, and he strives to build a bright future for his country and community, by collaborating with the greater global community.
I share the same vision. It was also the focus of my work at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi. It was this shared vision, that allowed us to collaborate to ensure a prosperous benefit for both countries. Q. What is your advice for someone starting a new business in the UAE?
A. First and foremost, with everything taking place in the UAE, companies need to show commitment. In order to build a lasting network and community within the UAE, it is important to have a relationship with a local company such as MGE.
Secondly, as is with any company, it is vital to follow up. With a country that has such a vast range of products and services, following up with customers and partners, as well as catering to the local customer, shows commitment and goes a long way.
Q. What developments do you see in the near future for US-UAE business relations?
A. It is only getting stronger as the country

continues to grow. As the UAE grows multiples of its industry at once, we see a stronger US-UAE business relation. However, to pinpoint a specific growth area, we see manufacturing as the next big move in the UAE.
The UAE will be hosting the next global manufacturing summit. This is a great initiative to have the international community come to Abu Dhabi and discuss manufacturing and what that entails for the UAE’s future.
Q. What is your favorite aspect about being a member of AmCham Abu Dhabi? Why would you recommend individuals and companies to become a member?
A. After moving to Abu Dhabi in 2008, I immediately attempted to get a better view of the community, and as such I joined AmCham in order to realize this view. Once I retired from the U.S. government, I decided to run for the AmCham board of directors.
My favorite aspect of AmCham are the people. They are such high caliber people who have influenced my career. I am surrounded by smart professionals and we benefit each other both personally and in business, and this is something I am proud to be a part of.
As for recommending people to AmCham, AmCham continues to grow and mature as a Chamber, and we are very excited on a board level to continue growing it. We see a value in having a global voice, especially when it ties back to our annual advocacy week in Washington D.C.
Q. What inspired you to be the Chair of the US-UAE Public Affairs Committee?
A. Being an active member of AmCham for six years was my inspiration. Also, having lived and worked in Washington D.C. and having relationships with people in the government, I developed a passion to be the voice of the American expat community, and to speak on behalf of expats to members on Capitol Hill.
Expats bring a lot of business back to the
US, they create jobs, and without us, many American businesses would not have had the opportunity to grow. We need to do a better job in communicating to our representatives the importance of having Americans living overseas, and what that does for each congressional district in creating opportunities and keeping America strong.
Q. What leadership lessons do you consider to be the most important?
A. I believe in leading by example, and I believe in always paying it forward. I would not have had positions of responsibility, had it not been for leaders and mentors that I was lucky enough to have worked under. I truly believe that having a mentor can greatly influence your path, and I believe paying it forward and working with the community will further shape and enhance your future.
Q. As a former officer in the US Air Force, are there any specific aircraft that you look forward to seeing at the 2015 Dubai Air-show?
A. The US Air Force has always had a strong relationship with the Dubai Airshow. Being an American, I would love to see US technologies, such as the F-22, F-16 and V22. I think there will be newer technologies that will be presented such as US-UAV products, which I am excited to see. UAVs are the future of aviation.
In 2011, I was very fortunate to help bring the F-22 to the Airshow, and to me that aerial demonstration was eye-watering, hopefully I can see such a performance again.
Q. Do you have any particular hobbies or interests?
A. I enjoy reading, exercise and soccer. However, I have recently picked up range shooting and golfing.

The AmCham MENA Regional Council represents nine AmChams: Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.; Algeria; Bahrain; Egypt; Jordan; Lebanon; Morocco; Palestine and Tunisia. The event hosted by AmCham Abu Dhabi and AmCham MENA Chairman, Matthew E. Byrd, provided a platform to strengthen business ties between MENA region markets and the U.S. and is an annual highlight of the MENA business calendar.
“AmCham Abu Dhabi is honored to host this year’s AmCham MENA Regional Council Conference,” said Matthew E. Byrd, Chairman of AmCham Abu Dhabi and Chair of AmCham MENA. “The MENA region accounts for less than 5% of total U.S. trade. AmCham members living across this region know well the rewards of doing business here. We are convinced that this trade number could skyrocket if business leaders followed long-term strategies - and not daily headlines – in accessing these lucrative markets. This conference surely will have positive impact on commercial relations between the U.S., the U.A.E., and the wider MENA region.”
Hisham A. Fahmy, CEO of AmCham Egypt, which is AmCham MENA’s Permanent Secretariat, remarked “This

year’s MENA Council Conference has been successful in looking at some of the ways in which the region’s private sector can work together and contribute positively to economic growth and to face commonly known realities. U.S. businesses operating in the region have an increasingly important role to play as real engines for growth, as they continue to hire and expand within our growing region. We as the MENA Council of regional AmChams will continue to advocate for an enhanced commercial relationship between the region and the United States.”
The four interactive sessions of the Conference, led by top industry executives, were 1) “Where are we now: Cross-MENA Trade & Investment: Present Realities-Future Potential”; 2) “Angels, Accelerators, VCs & Private Equity: Hype or Viable Funding Sources?” 3) “U.S. Investment in the MENA Region: Boosting Intra-regional Business Cooperation through Enhanced Supply Chain Systems”; and 4) “U.S. & Regional Government / Private Sector Initiatives for Economic Growth.”
On the sidelines of the Conference, AmCham MENA representatives held a formal ceremony to approve a “Sign-On” letter that will be hand-delivered to the 115th U.S. Congress later in April. The signatories approved the policy position, which requests Congressional leaders to support U.S. exports, job creation and U.S.-inbound Foreign Direct Investment by adopting a “Residence-
