Back-to-back champs!CTU-ECE Team wins second straight title in ECE Regional Quiz ShowTHE Cebu Technological Univer-sity-Electronics and Communica-tion Engineering (CTU-ECE) team stamped its class anew when it ruled the ECE Regional Quiz Show 2017 last October 8, 2017 at the Entertain-ment Plaza of SM Cebu City.

It was the second straight year that the team captured the championship crown.

Composed of Egbert Caba-hug, Alder Febraday Tamarra, Ser-con Maiso, Sheene Shane Mascardo, April Formentera and Kevin Antipor-ta, it bagged top honors by besting nine other schools offering BSECE program.

Other competing schools were the Cebu Institute of Technolo-gy-University, University of San Car-los, University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of Cebu (UC)-Lapu-Lapu/Mandaue, UC Main, Eastern Visayas State University and Samar State University.

“We have been wanting to prove something. We wanted to earn the respect of the participants because in the past, they will just say “it is just the CTU. They are not going to win.” But with this win, we were able to prove that the team is no pushover and we are very happy that we were able to bring glory to the school,” said CTU-ECE team coach Dr.

Jun-jun Obiso.

The team never made it to the top since it started competing in the annual contest. That changed when Dr. Obiso took over, guiding the team to the championship in his very first year as a coach.

“I handled the team starting 2016 and it felt good that we won the championship right away. I had already my formula when I was still in another school. When I started handling the team, I just fortified the formula and good thing it worked,” shared Dr. Obiso, who joined CTU as full-time instructor in 2015.

More than having the right program, it was the character of

every member that catapulted the CTU-ECE team to the top.

“I am very fortunate to have the students who are very dedicated and willing to learn,” he added.

Earning a spot in the team wasn’t easy as the selection process was tough from the inter- depart-mental quiz bowl of 40 students in the classroom to the final six who will represent in the regional compe-tition as predetermined during the ECE Days.

It took a lot of hard work and dedication to win the tournament as the team had to train three hours a

day for one whole week. “It’s all about time manage-ment. We train after our classes and also at home. Then if we don’t have

CTU-ECE named finalist in LEAR Innovation Olympics 2017

IN WHAT is considered a “milestone,” the Cebu Technological Universi-ty-Electronics Communication Engi-neering (CTU-ECE) team was chosen as one of the finalists in the LEAR In-novation Olympics 2017. Composed of Engr. Maria Gemel Palconit (adviser), Sercon Maiso, Adrian Melgo and Ailyn Om-pad, the CTU-ECE team will go up against other finalists from the Uni-versity of San Carlos, University of

classes, we just stay at home to prac-tice instead of going to the malls,” said Cabahug.

By defending the crown, the team has to compete in the ECE Na-tional Quiz Bowl to be held in No-vember at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

The team finished sixth in last year’s nationals and it is deter-mined to come up with a better re-sult this year.

“I can say we are more pre-pared and we are targeting no less than the championship,” said Dr. Ob-biso.

San Jose-Recoletos and Cebu Insti-tute of Technology-University.

CTU-ECE’s research titled SMS and Image Emergency Alarm System for Crime-Related Incidents in Taxicabs became one of the final-ists after a stringent and meticulous screening of entries from various uni-versities, said Dr. Jun-Jun Orbiso, who chairs CTU’s ECE Department.

“To be a finalist is already a

milestone for the ECE Department,” said Dr. Obiso in his letter to CTU president, Dr. Rosein A. Ancheta Jr.

Scheduled on Nov. 17 at the Lear PETC, MEPZ 2 in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, the LEAR Innovation Olympics 2017, considered as one of the biggest research and innovation Olympics, dangles a P125,000 cash prize for the champion. /CDC

CTU students ace PSME national quiz tilt

Mark Vincent Mamigo (from left), Joshua Gonzales, Rodel Resit, Engr. Jonathan Miraballes, Jun Arro Estrella and Edielbert Libre show the certificates they received after winning the prestigious 7th Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) Quiz Contest last October 8 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

THEY came, they saw and they con-quered! After several failed attempts, a group of mechanical engineering students from the Cebu Technolog-ical University (CTU)-Main Campus finally got the job done after they ruled the prestigious 7th Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) Quiz Contest last October 18 at the SMX Convention Center in Pa-say City.

Winning the national contest participated by 55 universities across the country served as a vindication of sorts as the CTU quizzers man-aged just fourth in this year’s region-al competition.

“For some reasons, we can-not win in the regional competition. But I have so much confidence in my students that I really insisted that we should compete in the nationals,” said the team’s coach Engr. Jonathan A. Miraballes, chairman of the CTU Mechanical Engineering Depart-ment.

The champion team was

composed of Mark Vincent Mami-go, Joshua Gonzales, Rodel Resit, Jun Arro Estrella and Edielbert Libre.

Gonzales admitted that the team’s morale was low going into the competition after their meager fourth-place finish in the regionals.

“We were disappointed be-cause we just finished fourth in the regionals. But we stayed focused in the nationals and fortunately we were able to make it,” said Gonzales.

CTU-Danao, this year’s re-gional champion, finished first run-ner-up while the University of Batan-gas was the second runner-up.

Engr. Miraballes said the vic-tory didn’t surprise him at all.

“I know the capabilities of these students. This is a group of hard-working, dedicated students who have a lot of potentials,” said Engr. Miraballes.

Engr. Miraballes said the key to winning the prestigious tour-nament was giving the team the

much-needed experience.

“They are experienced com-petitors. They were already trained when they were still in third year. They were taught what to do during competitions,” Engr. Miraballes said.

More than achieving per-sonal glory, the victory has great contributions to the CTU communi-ty.

“It has a great impact to the university. This achievement will greatly matter in the accreditation,” said Engr. Miraballes.

For Engr. Miraballes, win-ning the competition is an indica-tion that a bright future awaits the members of the team.

“These students will be the same students who are going to ex-cel in the board exam. We have stu-dents in CTU who won in this kind of competition and they ended up topping the board exam,” Engr. Mi-raballes pointed out. /CDC

The joy ofbeing agrandparent

Special Feature

Dr. Victor D. Villaganas (4th from right) bonds with his family, including his four grandchildren.

EVERY second Sunday of September, families gather for a very important occasion—the Grandparents’ Day.

Treating them out or having a simple get-together at home, it is during this special occasion that we highlight the importance of our “lo-los” and “lolas” in our lives.

Grandparents play significant roles in the family. They watch over the children when the parents are away. More importantly, grandpar-ents help mold their grandchildren’s character development, instilling good values, discipline and respect that will help them become good cit-izens in the society.

In celebration of the Grand-parents’ Day, the University Publica-tion Office (UPO) caught up with Dr. Victor D. Villaganas, the vice presi-dent for academic affairs of the Cebu Technological University.

Here, Dr. Villaganas talked about the joys and thrills of being a lolo. UPO: How many grandchildren do you have? Dr. Villaganas: I have four grandchil-dren. They are Valerie Reanne C. Vil-laganas, eight years old; Johan Viktor V. Fernandez, four years old; Xavier Anthony D. Villaganas, two years old; and Zara Mary D. Villaganas, one year old. UPO: How does it feel to be a grandpa? Dr. Villaganas: It feels fulfilling to be a grandfather because you will be able to see yourself in the person of your grandchildren, growing up, reminisc-ing your beautiful memories the past can offer.UPO: How are you as a grandpa? Dr. Villaganas: I am a pious grandpa,

praying always for the well-being of my grandchildren.UPO: Are you the kind who spoils grandchildren? Dr. Villaganas: No, because I was not spoiled by my parents, so it should not happen to them.UPO: Do you take time to bond with your grandchildren?Dr. Villaganas: Of course, every Saturday is a bonding day.UPO: How do you bond with your grandchildren? Dr. Villaganas: We go to the church together and have a family dinner afterwards. We also find time to visit different places and create happy memories. I also bring them to the different playhouses in the mall.UPO: What’s the fondest mo-ment that you have with your grandchildren? Dr. Villaganas: The fondest mo-ment happens when they show and exhibit their smart behavior. When they sometimes exhibit fun-ny behavior like making faces and doing some funny acts.UPO: How did you react when you learned that you’re having a grandchild? Dr. Villaganas: I felt very happy and fulfilled… A dream come true…UPO: What do you think is the most important role of a grand-pa to his grandchildren? Dr. Villaganas: The most import-ant role is to support the parents in taking care of their children.UPO: What is your dream for your grandchildren?Dr. Villaganas: To see them suc-cessful and professional in their

chosen field.UPO: What is the best advice that you can give to your grandchildren?Dr. Villaganas: To my dear grandchil-dren, always seek guidance from the Holy Spirit and always love and value your family.UPO: Growing up, what are your best memories with your grandparents?Dr. Villaganas: I was not able to expe-rience being with my grandparents be-cause they have already gone to the great beyond before I was born. /CDC

CTU participates in AUN-QA training in Thailand

TO KEEP up in the demand for international standard, the Cebu Techno-logical University (CTU) took part in the ASEAN University Network (AUN) – Quality Assurance (QA) Training Tier 1 held last October 17-20 in Bang-kok, Thailand.

The university was represented by CTU Director for Internation-alization and ASEAN Integration, Dr. Doris O. Gascon, who joined fellow leaders in quality assurance from ASEAN universities in the four-day 20th Training Course for Accomplishing Program Assessment.

“To cope with the trend on internationalization, the universities from the ASEAN region ought to elevate their quality of education; a ro-bust quality assurance system among the ASEAN universities could aid in this present demand for international standard,” said Dr. Gascon.

During the first day of the training, participants were oriented on the program’s content and what learning outcome was expected of them.

“Training materials were abun-dant, and the trainers were experts of the AUN-QA. There were three trainers: 2 from Singapore, and 1 from the Phil-ippines. In the morning, the Quality As-surance in Higher Education and AUN-QA Framework were introduced. In the afternoon, the commencement of the training on evaluating how AUN-QA criteria at program level was done,” Dr. Gascon shared.

During the second day, Gascon presented the assigned task for the participants which included program learning outcomes, program struc-ture and specifications, and curriculum mapping of the BS in Zoo Manage-ment.

“I was pleased to have received good comments from the audience. In the afternoon, we continued with the other criteria for program level evalua-tion,” Dr. Gascon relayed.

Included in the audience were representatives from Thailand, Viet-nam, Indonesia and Philippines. Apart from CTU, other participating univer-sities from the Philippines were Uni-versity of the Philippines (UP)-Baguio, UP-Cebu, Far Eastern University, and University of Santo Tomas.

“On the third day of training, we reviewed how to make Self-As-sessment Report (SAR). Included in the day was the orientation of Change Management. As this program is new and is inevitably integrated in the ob-jectives of ASEAN universities, we were immersed to the reality of how change could be uncomfortable for any orga-nization. We were told the process so change could not be that stressful to a system,” she recalled.

On the last day, participants presented the task given to them which was to fill out the self-assessment re-port based on the made-up universi-ty data. “ It went well. We learned a lot from the session. It ended with the giving of the certificates,” said Dr. Gas-con.
