    Nature Scape Playground

Work continues on the Nature Play Area.

The most recent addition was the river bed and

water tank and this has recently been enhanced

with native plants, stepping stones, sitting rocks,

mulch and lawn. This is a work in progress and

lawn still needs to be planted to assist in keeping

the 'sand' out of the river bed.

The next busy bee will be held on Thursday 12

March at 3:30pm in the pre-primary/kindy

area. Please bring a shovel, a rake, and your

gloves. If you have joined the early childhood

area this year, please come along and be involved!

We have been successful in receiving another

grant which will allow South Pole Structures to

commence Stage 4 shortly which will incorporate

a bike track and play shops.

Once these stages have been completed we look

forward to moving into other parts of the school to

provide more nature play areas for the children.

A Sausage Sizzle will be held at Bunnings on

Sunday 8 March - please see rosters on

classrooms if you can assist, or call in on the day

to make your purchase and support our school

    and our children!

  • Assembly

Well done to Room 21 on a super assembly.

It was truly terrific and what a wonderful

message about how important it is to look

    after your teeth!

Next Friday's assembly will be hosted by

Year 4/5 students of Room 23. The school

looks forward to all family and friends

attending. Dont forget the new start time of

    9am.

    Win back your Voluntary Contributions!

Pay your childs school fees before the end of

Term 1 and you will go into the raffle to win

    back the money!

Three prizes are up for grabs. One entry is

given to every child who has paid. (i.e. a

family with 3 children attending YPS, will

    have 3 chances to win).

    P&C

It was fantastic to see all the returning

members and some new faces representing

the Yakamia families at the P&C annual

general meeting last week. The P&C has

achieved so much in the school over many

years and continues to be a driving force

coordinating a wonderful canteen and many

fundraising opportunities. I look forward to a

    continued positive working relationship with

the P&C and the new P&C President,

Belinda Stonehouse. A big welcome to all

office bearers for 2015 thank you for your

    support.

    DRUMBEATDiscovering Relationships

    Using MusicBeliefs, Emotions, Attitudes &

    Thoughts

A selection of students at Yakamia have

    commenced participation in the DRUMBEAT

Program, run by Mr Fisher, our School

    Chaplain.

    DRUMBEAT promotes social understanding

and connection through a team drumming

experience. It is fun, safe, creative, engaging

and rewarding. Participants lift their self-

esteem, learn to work cooperatively and are

exposed to the therapeutic and recreational

    benefits of music.

    School Choir

We are very pleased to have the fabulous Mrs

Jeanette Brooks volunteer to run both a

Senior and Junior School Choir this year.

Students have been flocking in to the Mursic

Room on Monday and Wednesday lunch times

to be part of this wonderful initiative. We

look forward to hearing them at an assembly

    in the near future.

    WANTED School Hats!!!

If any families have second hand, broad

brimmed hats they are no longer using, the

    school would appreciate and donations.

These hats can be dropped in to the school

    office.

  • Beginning Readers

Talk about language you and your children come across in everyday experiences

    1. Talk It Up ... your childs vocabulary is essential to them understanding what they read. Help

them to build their vocabulary by talking to them about interesting words and encourage them to ask

you about words they dont understand.

    2. Signs and Symbols ... Point out signs and symbols you see and what they mean. It will reinforce

the idea that symbols, such as the letters in words, have meaning.

    3. Play I Spy ... This is a great way to connect letters and sounds and language with the words they

    represent.

    4. Words all Around ... Read out words you see when shopping or out and about. When children

become familiar with some words, ask them to read them for you.

    5. Read Aloud ... Set aside time every day to read (and re-read) favourite books. Hearing them

    helps familiarise children with language.

    BEDWETTING (ENURESIS) PROGRAM

Do you have a child who wets the bed and would like to be dry? Bedwetting is a common childhood problem and it can be resolved. Children will not necessarily grow out of it and left untreated, bedwetting can continue into adulthood.

In the past 30 years, 1000s of WA children have become dry through the Princess Margaret Hospitals (PMH) enuresis program. This program is available locally through the Great Southern Population Health (Community Health) and provided by school health nurses.

The enuresis program is available for your child if:

They are aged 6 years to 13years but not older than 13 and 9 months

Have 2 or more night occurrences of a wet bed in a week

    Child wants to become dry

Please contact Great Southern Population Health on 98427500 or alternatively contact the Community School nurse on 98427564 for more information.

Do you have a child starting school this year?

Starting school is a big event for children and a change for the whole family. For useful information and tips to help your child have a good start to school, go to the KidsMatter website to watch the new videos made especially for Australian parents - https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/families/starting-school.

    Growth and Development

Uncomfortable broaching the subject? A useful guide for parents developed by the WA Health Department is Talk Soon Talk Often. Order your copy from public.health.wa.gov.au/2/1276/2/parentgiver.pm

    Healthy lunch box ideas

Your childs lunch box can contain food from all of the five food groups. The food groups are; breads and cereals, fruit, vegetables, meat/meat alternatives and dairy/dairy alternatives. Some examples can be found at www.nutritionaustralia.org.

    Try these in the lunchbox;

    Lean ham and salad wrap.

    Banana and handful of grapes.

    Sliced vegetables (carrots, cucumber, tomatoes).

Handful of reduced fat cheese cubes.

    Bottle of water.
