Mike Ruby, our District Governor next year wrote in The Rotarian Magazine this month: Worth a read: How refreshing it is to be offered a cup of cold water at just the appropriate time! Water quenches thirst like no other beverage - it's genuine, pure, and satisfying. Have you ever received an unex-pected gift of cold water when you were hot, tired, sweaty, frustrated, or exhausted? If so, you know how that simple act of love and concern was truly appreciated. Cold water can come in the form of a reassuring pat on the back, a big smile that says, "I like you;' a hug of reassurance, an offer to give someone a ride, a visit to an elderly neighbor, an unexpected hug for your spouse, child, or special friend, or just being available when someone is hurting. Rotarians have a wonderful opportunity to serve cups of cold water locally, in our district, and internationally. We can do this in the form of greeting our fellow Rotarians at weekly meetings with a smile, a handshake, and a word of encour-agement. Community service projects give us ample opportunity to serve cups of cold, refreshing water by giving dictionaries to third- graders, funding new playground equipment, providing scholar-ships to deserving students, and opening our homes to youth exchange students. Be assured these cups of cold water can also impact children in Central America by providing them with a new pair of shoes, school supplies, and textbooks, or building water wells in Haiti, or shipping medical supplies to South America. The immense flagship cup of cold water that Rotarians have been providing for over 30 years is the two drops of vaccine to immunize millions of children, guaranteeing they will live a polio-free life. What a priceless gift! Every single one of the more than 1.2 million Rotarians in the world has an extraordinary opportunity to serve cups of cold water to others. By working togeth-er, serving just one cup at a time, we can have a life-changing impact on millions of people around the globe. Your attendance at meetings, the volunteer hours you give serving on Rotary committees, and your regular financial support help make a big difference. What ways can you, or your club, in-crease the number of cups of cold water you serve this year?

LAST WEEK – September 9 – Maddie Case; Make-A-Wish Foundation
Maddie Case raised $10,000 in two years to grant a child, Vasia, with her wish to travel to Hawaii. Vasia had a clear cell meningioma, a type of tumor on her spine that required multiple surgeries in Iowa City. Maddie was especially interested in the Make-A-Wish project, as her mother, Tara, was granted a wish when she was in high school, as she had a form of cancer in her knee. Maddie is a runner and in Junior High she entered races for the Live Uncommon organization. When she would place and earn money, her money was directed to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. When children receive a wish, they are happier and more responsive to the treatments they are receiving. Maddie has made this her Legacy project at NSHS, educating her fellow students and the community about Make-A-Wish. She hopes to raise enough money to grant another wish before her graduation in May 2018.
Sixty two attended on Friday, including guests, Nancy Case, Brian Crowley, Jon Cole and Jeff Mar-tens. The 50/50 drawing of $122 was won by Charlie Jones. Patrick Olsen was the sergeant and collected $58 in fines. Brian Williams announced that he has gone to work for WQPT and donated $25 to the education fund. Becky Bray and Charlie Jones also donated for their wedding anniversaries. Josh Cobie asked for future volunteers to help inflate helium balloons for the Festival of Trees parade, in November. Deb Peterson is also taking volunteers for the weekly pie auctions to begin September 23 for 7 weeks, previous to the auction. NOTE: Auction items may be brought to the Steeplegate at any regular meeting. Please bring along a completed donation sheet. THANK YOU!
The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
