Personal Development

This year, we are working on integrating Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens

into the foundation of our academic and leadership programming. For the first nine weeks grading period, we are fo-

cusing on the first three habits, which are all about becoming the best you you can be. The first habit, Be Proactive, is

an essential habit for any YWLA student. It involves thinking ahead, making good choices, and solving problems be-

fore they can grow into larger challenges. The second habit, Begin with the End in Mind, focuses on setting goals and

thinking about the end product needed for any task before you try to tackle it. The third habit, Put First Things First,

is our current focus. Our students know all too well the sacrifices that can come with putting academics first. When

you see your daughter putting things first at home with her studies and other priorities, take the time to acknowledge it

and praise her for it.

PSAT for 10th and 11th Graders

The tenth and eleventh grade students will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. For 11th graders,

this is their one opportunity to qualify as a National Merit Scholar or National Hispanic Scholar. Free test preparation

is available on the Khan Academy website at: https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/new-sat . The PSAT for 2015

is in the same format as the new SAT that will be unveiled in March 2016. Students need to spend time working

through practice questions so that they can become familiar with the new format.

Bullying Prevention

October is Bullying Prevention Month, and I will be visiting classrooms to talk to the girls about how to identify bul-

lying behaviors (versus conflicts or “mean moments”), how to intervene in bullying situations, and what to do if the

behavior doesn’t stop. If you are concerned about interactions your daughter is having at school, please know that I

am here to help her sort through the situation.

There has been an increase in the number of incidents being reported to my office that seem to be occurring via texts,

Snapchat, Twitter, etc. If your daughter has a smart phone, take the time to talk to her about appropriate use of apps

and social media with friends, and the potential consequences of not taking the time to “pause before you post.”

Academic Achievement and Attendance

Attendance is an important variable in academic achievement. If your child is not at school, then she is missing in-

struction and assignments. Please help your child get to school each day so that she does not miss instruction and is

eligible to participate in our fun attendance activities. Getting to school on time is also an important part of student

attendance. Students who are tardy for any period will now be serving lunch detention in the auditorium. Excessive

tardies will result in a parent/administrator conference.
