Hello readers,

Welcome back to the first issue of 2015 of the

West Valley Gazette, the mouth piece, the voice so to speak,

of the students of the Community Immersion Program. We

are now in our 3 year of publishing and each month we try to

find ways so that students write their articles with either no

help from staff or as little as possible. Indeed this month

marked the first issue in which one of our students, who had

previously had to dictate her article to staff, used her Nexus 7

tablet “speech to text” feature to transcribe her entire restau-

rant review. Way to go Aubrey Beebe! We look forward to

longer and more in depth reviews from Aubrey as she grows

more knowledgeable of her device.

One important announcement for the program. The

date for this year’s Honors Night needed to be changed. So,

Graduation Week will look like this:

Monday June 1st C.I.P. Honors Night at W.V.C.

Tuesday June 2nd LGSUHSD School Board Meeting.

Wednesday June 3rd NOVA Program Graduation.

Thursday June 4th Saratoga High School Graduation.

Friday June 5th Los Gatos High School Graduation.

So plan ahead, if you are looking to spend your entire week

attending exciting and fun graduation ceremonies!

Let’s have a great Spring semester! Kevin

skiing because it’s fun. You should love skiing for exercise. See you next month Hayden

Mitchell.

This month I am going to talk about staying healthy by Skiing. I love to ski because it keeps me fit. I ski very good so I will be good and strong. Some ways of how skiing helps is it burns up a lot of calories. It can burn up to 3,000 calories in 6 hours of skiing. It helps your core stomach muscles by toning your stom-ach muscles. It helps to protects your spine by stabilizing it. It helps your cardio vascular system. A better car-dio vascular system means a higher

Hello viewers, I am happy

to help with your automo-

tive questions. You can

ask me anything that you

have in mind.

My subject this month is

“wheel weights.” Wheel

weights are meant to keep

in balance. Cars have 4

struts and 4 springs, that

can vibrate and give a un-

comfortable ride to the pas-

senger. When the wheel is

unbalanced it will wob-

ble. The automotive

technician puts on

small weights to reduce

the wobbling of the

wheel. Here’s an exam-

ple, let’s say on the

right side of the wheel

is 1.75oz, that means

the left of the wheel

needs to be the same.

.Some places I would like to work is maybe

at a preschool because I really like interacting

with children because every time my parents

have a party at my house, they let me watch

my parent’s friend’s kids. I like working with

kids around age 2 or 3 because of their ener-

gy. I have had some experiences working at a

preschool and I enjoyed it.

Until next time,

Dear Friend,

My mom is a nurse, she would probably tell you to go get it

checked out by a doctor. I would say that too. When you

go to the doctor he should be able to get an antibiotic which

is a medication to help make it go away. If I were you, I

would not worry about it. If your girlfriend cares about you,

she won’t worry about the small things. She probably

won’t be looking at your feet she will probably be looking at

your face. Don’t sweat the small things. You should still get

it checked out by a doctor. If she does care about you she

might say the same thing that I am saying go see a doctor

and have him help you. If you want more advice I am here

for you. I will listen. You

don’t have to take my word

for it, but I really would

recommend seeing a doctor

about your toe.. Your

Friend Amanda

think that the pool chair lift works perfect-ly. When I use it, I need to have three people there to help me. The first person helps to make sure my wheelchair doesn’t fall in the water. The second person waits in the water for me to come down. The third person helps me by moving my feet and helping me pivot and transfer into the chair. Thank you everyone. This is the ADA com-pliance guy cutting out.

Hi Everyone, This is the C.I.P. ADA Compliance Guy, Daniel Stickney. We are going to talk about transfers in and out of the pool using the chair lift. There is a chair lift located on the shallow side of the pool. The lift is meant for people who have disabili-ties. I have been using this lift for getting in and out of the pool during my swimming lessons for two years. I

Even though we are mammals, we

are still animals. A couple

Classifications are reptiles, felines,

canines and many others. We are in

the classification of humans, but we

are still animals. If you don’t be-

lieve me look it up online. But as

far as I know the facts say we are

the animals at the top of the food

chain. More facts next month.

.Scientists say and even I believe that

we humans are animals. All animals

are classified into a group, our group

just happens to be humans. We

evolved from animals and we are still

animals. If you look at where we

came from you will see that we are

still animals and we evolved over

time. There was The Ice Age and The

Dinosaurs. There were Caveman

and apes we evolved from them.

Student of the Month

Ricardo “Ricky” Picha has been chosen as student of the month for February.

This is Ricky’s second year in the Community Immersion Program. Over the past

two years, Ricky has made great strides towards independence. During his first

semester he was taught how to take college classes and he was travel trained to

use VTA. He now uses VTA to get around town independently and takes college

classes without staff support. Ricky has maintained the direct hire paid position at a

local pizza restaurant that he got through Workability while at Saratoga High

School. He currently works 5-6 days a week! Last year

Ricky became a shining star in our Bistro program

where he sliced and diced his way to local fame by be-

ing featured in the Los Gatos Times and the San Jose

Mercury News! This year he kicked things up a notch

by participating in the El Cajon restaurant internship

program where he currently is learning culinary skills at

an upscale local restaurant. In the world of college,

Ricky has taken on new and interesting challenges by

enrolling in men’s weight training and ceramics for two

semesters. You will be able to see his ceramic work

featured on our art display at this year’s annual Honors

Night. Ricky likes being employed, taking college clas-

ses and spending time with friends and family. He has

worked hard to become more independent while showing a good understanding of

all of the responsibilities that go with being in a community-based program. Ricky

has become increasingly connected to the Los Gatos-Saratoga community by mak-

ing responsible choices and being willing to explore new opportunities that the com-

munity has offered him. He has opened doors for himself by showing up and work-

ing hard. Now Ricky is able to enjoy all of the benefits and freedoms of young

adulthood such as taking classes on his own, spending the money

that he earns however he chooses, traveling where he wants to go

on his own, participating in creating his own schedule and spend-

ing his free time doing fun activities that he likes with his peers.

What will the next two years in the Community Immersion Pro-

gram hold for Ricky? With the continued determination that he

has been showing, there will definitely be a growing number of op-

tions for him to choose from. Keep an eye out for Ricky

Picha. This is one student who is going places.

Monthly Tip for instilling

Independence :

Budgeting:

If you give your son or daughter

an allowance, make sure it is one

lump sum at the beginning of the

week or better yet at the begin-

ning of the month.

Now factor in how many days till

the end of the “pay period” and

help your child divide the number

of days into the lump sum.

This amount is how much they

can spend each day.

If they overspend and ask for

more money at any time, never

give them additional money.

Its better they learn to budget

while we are here to teach them
