Letter from the EditorOne of my former subscribers told me that she had stopped subscribing because FFRU seems to have focus on Southern U.S. Franklins. I would like to say that is not correct, but in practice, as we look over the past issues of this FFRU newsletter, I have to agree with her. That is definitely NOT the mission of FFRU, so I will have to make a conscious effort to reverse this trend.

Another complaint recently heard on the Franklin internet newslist, is that the list is primarily U.S.-based. Like the FFRU observation this, too is correct and is also based on participation.

Between the previous volume of FFRU and this one, was Black History Month. My genealogy club at work hired a prominent African-American author to speak about genealogy. She got me thinking about the chal-lenges for researchers with U.S. slave ancestry. You will note that there is an article of African-American Franklins in this issue. If any of you have slave records among your research, please share it. I would be happy to publish it here in FFRU.

This volume contains the second biography of a famous Franklin, General William Buel Franklin, who com-manded Union troops in the U.S. Civil War. He was a controversial figure while he was alive. Russ Dodge was kind enough to allow me to publish the photos that he took of General Franklin’s grave. Thanks

I’ve received quite a few queries, most of which I could answer in some fashion. Many of those ansand queries are included herein.

News-Sentinel Knoxville, Tennessee, 27 Feb 1927, ‘Finds Records of First Negro “Marriages”’

Records of the first legal marriages ever made by Negroes in Knoxville have recently been unearthGlenn Graham, chauffeur of Miss Mary Boyce Temple. These notices appeared in copies of "ParsoBrownlow's Knoxville Chronicle of the era immediately following the Civil War. Negroes before the wwere simply married by consent of their masters.

The old records disclose among others the following marriages:

Sultana Sinks! 1,500+ Feared LostBy permission of Greg Reeves <[email protected]>, owner of the Sultana web page found at:http://www.rapidnet.com/~greg/Sultana/Sultana.htmlClearly overloaded, this is the last known photo of the Sultana, taken the afternoon before the tragedy when the steamer was taking on coal at Helena, Arkansas.

That’s how newspaper headlines should have read in the days immediately following the Sultana’s explosion on the Mississippi River early on the morning of April 27, 1865. After all, well over 1,500 paroled Union soldiers, crewmen and passengers lost their lives in the cold, mud-dy waters that spring morning.

Unfortunately, a war-torn and weary nation still was reel-ing from President Lincoln's shocking assassination just two weeks earlier and the Eastern-established newspapers relegated the sad story to internal pages. However, it was (and remains even today) America’s wormaritime disaster. The actual number of passengers aboard the Sultana will likely always be uncleapoor record keeping at the time of boarding, but scholars today believe that between 2,200 and 2,30probably aboard the ill-fated steamer when she exploded nine miles north of Memphis, Tennessee Mississippi River.

Genealogy Tip: Death Certificates and Death RecordsHey, what’s the difference between death records and death certificates? If you don’t know, you may be missing out on something very important! By Federal Law, vital records began to be kept all over the UStates approximately 1910-1920, with the exact date depending on the state. This was the beginninform, official, birth, death and marriage certificates, which were kept by the state. Prior to that time, many counties kept vital records. These vital records are usually kept in large volumes of ledger books. Fojurisdictions in the U.S., if you ask the county or the state for a death certificate for a person who died in 1890, you won’t get one. If, however, you ask the county for a death record, that is an entirely different matter!!! This might seem like a nuance to you. To the clerks and various record-keepers, there is aof difference between a death record and a death certificate.

Now, that said, if someone tells you that they have a birth certificate for someone who was born in thin 1901, for instance, you should ask to see it. There aren’t many of them, but they do exist. The momon reason they exist is that the person needed one later for some purpose and got one after the fa

exist, but they are rare.

I recently got a request from a researcher who insisted that if I didn’t have the birth certificate for a mawas born in Missouri in the 1860’s, that they were going to get it themselves... Good luck! Expandinwhat I said in FFRU Volume 28, the most likely source for this information is: Census, county birth re(if they were kept) and family bibles. In this particular case, his information was found in the census, family bible, in county divorce records and in the local newspapers. Additional insight has been founrecorded interview with one of his daughters, land records, and a city atlas which lists him as a mema church. Many events in his life have been documented, but there is no birth certificate.

Birth Certificate NoteFrom Barton Meeks <[email protected]>: “I learned something about vital records... I wendowntown to get a copy of my birth certificate (for a passport.) It didn’t have my mother listed! My modied when I was 13, and stepmother adopted me after she married my father, so the BC listed my stepThe woman at vital records told me that after the adoption, my original BC is sealed in an envelopewould need to get a judge to order having it opened. Anyway, I knew she adopted me at the time, bua little surprised when I got my BC. No big deal, but it is another thing to think about when judging tinformation on a BC.”

Major General Ambrose Burnside was the commander during the disastrous loss for the Union in the Battle of Fredricksburg. General Burnside blamed General Franklin. Under Burnside, he commanded the 1st and 6th Corps, at the Battle of Fredericksburg, 13 Dec 1862. General Burnside, by complaining that Franklin did not obey orders in this battle caused the General Franklin to be sharply censured by the Congressional committee on the conduct of the war, and he was also removed from his command for insubordination. Earliest Franklin Progenitor: Thomas B. Franklin (1760 - 1808), husband of Jemima Morris.

My Observations: The copy that I viewed at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City was in good con-dition, appeared to be printed with a dot matrix printer using a proportional Roman style serif-type font. It is clearly written and easy to read. It uses a variation of the Henry numbering scheme. There are a few pages of generalities on Franklins, including the family of the famous Statesman. There are numerous references to source documents and this volume appears to be well-written and documented. The author, Ch MAJ Dan Franklin, is a member of FFRU.

Earliest Franklin Progenitor: Robert Franklin/Franklyn born circa 1745 in Virginia, died about 7 Jun 1813, husband of 1) Elizabeth ? and 2) Mary (Hopkins) Shackleton.

My Observations: The copy that I viewed at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City was in good con-dition, and is neatly hand-written. It is a collection of family group sheets in a format called “Living FaChart” and makes heavy use of abbreviations (explained at the beginning of the book) to save spaceis difficult to read. Includes a photocopy of the Robert Franklin’s original will, a listing of the Franklin Thornton Cemetery in Pamplin, Virginia.

My mystery woman is my ggggg grandmother, Elizabeth Jennie Franklin. I have read two accountswhere Jennie came from. But first, let me give you the data I have. Jennie married James Boles whbelieved) came from Pennsylvania. James was the son of John Boles, Sr. and May, Mary, or Polly. them were estimated to have been born in the 1740’s. They married in 1761 or 62. They had 3 sonsBoles, John Boles, Jr., and Thomas Boles. John Boles, Sr. and May/Mary/Polly spent the last yearslife in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee before the boundaries were established for Tennessebeen documented that James lived in Washington County, Virginia and Maryville, Blount County, Tesee before settling in Overton County, Tennessee. The homeplace where they settled is now in Pickety, Tennessee (called Bolestown). John Boles, Jr. and Thomas Boles were also found in WashingtoCounty, Virginia concurrently with James.Okay, (sorry for the digression, just trying to give you bacground info) now to the two stories of Jennie:

#1 This account was given to Albert Hogue, historian of Fentress County, Tennessee by Phoebe Boles Mc-Clellan. “James Boles was my great-grandfather on mother’s side. His wife was Elizabeth Franklin whose mother came over the ocean when she was fourteen years old. James Boles’ father settled sylvania, and Elizabeth’s mother and father in Virginia.”#2. It is believed that Elizabeth Jennie Franklin was the daughter of _______ Franklin and Princessthe daughter of Cherokee Chief Obidiah, brother of Chief Nettle Carrier.

Widely divergent accounts, aren’t they! Although mental processes can’t possibly substituted for rethese conditions existed at the time of the account that Phoebe Boles McClellan had given. The Chhad been forced to evacuate their lands east of the Mississippi and marched to Oklahoma. Those whwant to be ripped away from their families, or those with Indian blood, hid their roots. I also understanit was considered embarrassing to have Indian blood during that time period. (I myself would be honhave Cherokee blood, and hope that Jennie is found to be half Cherokee.) If you or anyone knows aabout Elizabeth Jennie Franklin, I would be ever so grateful.Respectfully yours,Cheryl Smith <[email protected]>

Editor’s Notes: I found a GEDCOM that I copied several years ago, which contains a James Boles,Elizabeth Franklin, daughter Phoebe Boles, born 8 Aug 1805 in Blount County, Tennessee; died 1 Se1860. No other info. No notes. No sources. It’s about 300Kb. It was submitted to the GEDCom databAnthony and Peggy Watson; 6911 NE Livingston Road; Camas, WA 98607; United States; (360) 69

Please also note that another Boles and Franklin line is mentioned/detailed in the Charter issue and V10 of FFRU (neither of which is available yet on-line).Here is a brief excerpt: “5. Julia Ann Franklin (b7 Dec 1809 Mercer County, Kentucky died 1856 Sullivan County, Indiana) 28 Apr 1890 buried PalmPrairie Cemetery, Sullivan County, Indiana) married 27 Mar 1830 Mercer County, Kentucky to MajoPleasant Boles. The “came over the ocean” story is so common, yet carries no detail that can be verified. Nevertheteach genealogists that these tales frequently have a nugget of truth buried inside them.

All the while I was growing up we had a tale about a Cherokee “princess” in our family. What is that? native american communities were arranged in clans, each of which had a chief, so almost all if notone of the female population could have been said to have been close kin to a “chief,” but what exacthat mean? So far, my research shows that the “princess” in my family was the daughter of an unknSauk and Fox indian, and not in any way related to any Cherokees...

I have been searching for Mary Franklin’s parents for over 10 years with no luck. Maybe someone wognize her and contact me. This is all I know about her:

Mary Franklin, born about 1836 in either Georgia or South Carolina depending on which census yoat. She married John Dixon about 1850 or 1851 -- unknown where. She died in October 1876 and isin the Dixon Family Cemetery near St. George, Georgia. The first census that I can find either John oin is the 1860 New River, Florida Census. Mary and John are married with 6 children. Mary is listed

The 1790 census of South Carolina shows Benjamin Franklin as born “before ’56” He was living in field County. I trace my ancesfollows: Benjamin begat Littleberry who begat Allen who begat Avery, who begat Asa, who begat my fGeorge Avery Franklin... In previous research Brent Holcomb said that Benjamin’s father could haveThomas, but since there were three Thomas's within the area, he didn't want to make a guess. Are tscendants of either Benjamin or Ephraim who can help me with the name of their father ?
