Cole Roberts

Staff writer During the annual intramural tournament inthe gym this year an unfamiliar team has risento the occasion, and that team is The FunkyBunch.

Unlike most teams, the Funky Bunch isnot about winning, as junior guard Cash“Monix” Conrad said “Winning isn’t ev-erything, it’s just about keeping it funky”.

And that’s just what the funky bunch

is doing, most notably wearing turquoiseshirts with the logo of the Funky Bunch inthe center.

The starting ve consists of all juniorsincluding Seth “Baby Bird” Wells, Kevin“Dick PepperField” Kitchens, Jackson“Downtown Funky Stuff Malone” Conrad.Cash “Monix” Conrad and Brian “CoffeeBreak” Fritsche.

But this team isn’t only a ve man team they

also have a key bench with juniors James “JiveTurkey” Thomas, James “Dr.J” Wilson andColton “Twiggy” Loehr.

Being unconventional, as most teams the

Funky Bunch is led by your writer Coach Cole“C-Bass” Roberts. Now many may ask, what is the reason for the

nicknames? Or is there any secret meaning be-hind them?

If you ask anyone on the team they will tellyou the same thing “Our nicknames are what

de ne us, they’re all tailor made to our skills”said “Downtown Funky Stuff Malone”, AKAJackson Conrad.

The Funky Bunch’s season started off with

a tough three games facing “The Footballers”which consisted of members of the footballteam.

The second game was against “The Fam” ateam that was comprised of varsity basketball players. Their third game was against “Ques-tion Mark” led by senior varsity player AllynCooks.

Unfortunatley the Funky Bunch lost their rstthree games, but did get back on track with a

win over the “Rudder Girls”.So far the Funky Bunch is off to a 1-3 record, but don’t think one second that their recordwill down thier hopes.

As “Baby Bird” said best “ Winning is impor-tant, we want to do well, but we’re out there to prove that the funk movement has not died.”

Soon after this the Funky Bunch lost their lastthree games and ended with a 1-6 record for thetournament.

Through the struggling tournament, throughall the team had accomplished. They kept the funk alive.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of funkiness

New Era Upon Aggie Faithful Cowboys Address Draft NeedsAfter the Cowboy’s season-ending loss to the eventual Super Bowl

Champion, the New York Giants, in the Divisional Championship, mostCowboy fans eyes were locked onto the NFL Draft, as were mine.

And after an off-season where the Cowboys remained to stay in themedia spotlight with the signing of Pac Man Jones, I was very inter-ested to see who we would draft.

To no surprise with our 22nd pick we took Felix Jones from Arkan-sas. I really like this pick because we can utilize a two back system tothe fullest by having a thunder and lightning combination , the thunder being Marion Barber, while the lightning being Felix Jones.

Later in that round at pick number 25 we addressed the cornerback position by grabbing Mike Jenkins from South Florida which was oneof our weaknesses last year, our pass defense which was ranked 13thin the NFL.

I really like what the Cowboys did during the draft addressing theirneeds and bolstering our lineup which includes 13 pro-bowlers fromlast year.

My expectations for this year’s team will be that they have to outdolast year’s team that had a 13-3 record.

By saying outdo, it doesn’t mean in terms of wins to losses. It will be when we get to the playoffs, and this time we come away with a 6thSuper Bowl title.

College football season is upon us and is coming at a faster and fasterrate each day.

In April Texas A&M wrapped their spring game which gave all A&Mfans a view of what new head coach Mike Sherman will be doing thisseason.

What I want to see next year more than any other thing is what kind ofoffense we will run this upcoming season.

I’m expecting it to be completely different from the year’s previousoption heavy based offense.

By the looks of our offense during the spring game we will be runningmostly under center offense and the occasional shotgun and utilizing theI-Formation, with junior Mike Goodson at tailback and Javorskie Lane atfullback.

Also, we’ll have to see how our defense will progress under new de-fense coordinator Joe Kines coming from Alabama.

This season will de antly be interesting. My prediction for the seasonis that we will have a 8-4 season and make a return trip to the AlamoBowl.

I believe the team will and should make great strides towards the endof the season when they begin to know where they need to be on the eldat all time and hopefully come away with a win.

This season will be something to look forward to, unlike many of the previous years.

Ruthie Speaks! Ruthie DearmanStaff writer

As I walk down the breeze-way on my way to class, I can-not help but notice garbage piledon the concrete, over owing thetrash cans, and tangling in thecourtyard bushes.

When I go to the bathroom, Isee the wasted paper towels allover the oors because studentsare careless and use unnecces-sary amounts of the provided paper.

The students of Bryan Highand the school board itself shouldworry just a little more about theenvironment we live in.

We, the students, are the future, and we should care about the fu-

ture of the Earth. It is somethingthat we will always live in, and it provides our means of survival.I think that people take advan-tage of nonrenewable recources, and the trees that are constantly being torn down for the use ofour convenience.

While we cannot change theworld, we should do whatever

we can to help save the environ-ment.

Here are some things theschool could invest in to help usstudents contribute to the preser-vation of our world:

-Replace the paper toweldispensers with electric hand

dryers. Not only will they savemoney in the long run, keep the bathrooms more clean, and bemore sanitary than paper tow-els; they will greatly reduce theamount of paper wasted at ourschool.

-Buy a couple recycle binsfor the cafeterias. If studentscooperate, recycle bins could beuseful for collecting soda cansand plastic bottles. That way the

numerous cans of soda studentsdrink can be recycled and usedto make more soda cans, insteadof collecting in our land lls.

-Replace the outside trashcans with larger ones. Ever no-tice how lunch trays never seemto t in the over owing outdoor trash cans? Perhaps larger, moreroomy trashcans that were emp-

tied more often would make iteasier for students and facultyto throw away their garbage, and the chances of students sim- ply throwing their trash on theground might decrease.

A less expensive way for stu-dents to help save our eviron-

ment would be to not litter. It re-ally isn’t that dif cult to get upand throw trash away.

The couple of seconds it willtake you to throw your trashaway is much smaller than thecouple of years it will take foryour trash to disintegrate intothe ground.

So, next time you’re about totoss your Vitamin Water bottle behind you as the bell rings for

class, think about how it is af-fecting the world around you. Also, next time you use the

restroom, don’t use half a rollof paper towels to dry off yourhands, if possible, let them airdry.

It’s a small change, but it ischange, and a little goes a longway.

Municipal Solid Waste in the US

-Between 1960 and1990, per capita Mu-nicipal Solid Waste

generation in the U.S.increased 68% includingan increase of more than

20% in the 1990s.-At the current per

capita rate (4.54 lbs/ person/day) the aver-

age american generatesthier own weight (~160lbs) in Municipal SolidWaste every 36 days.

The world according to Loagn KickhaPit Stop:for a shortvisit to my brother inColorado.

In all honesty, we know that summers never turn out to beeverything we expected. It’s the one time kids get to relax andactually be kids.

With summer jobs and all the hooplah (yes hooplah) it canturn into three months of pure stress.Whether you have realized this or not, most of us only have

a few summers left before we go out into the real world, withreal jobs.

For most young people, the summer signi es change, whichwe all know isn’t always welcomed with open arms.

For me this summer has opened a new chapter in my life.My brother is graduating and it’s the rst time we’ve ever

been apart.

Of course this is something new and it will be sad, but it’snot the end of the world.Keeping this in mind, my goal for the next three months is

to just enjoy life while it’s simple.I think everyone should try to make a conscious effort to

make the most of a break, and nd out what is truly importantin life.

Like the Counting Crows once said: “You don’t know what-cha got til it’s gone.”

Page 8 - Basically, The Music Page May 2008

By ChelseaDowney

Unchained MelodyFor me, music is what

keeps me sane and de nesmy life. Having a bad day?Turn on some George Straitor Martina McBride to keepmy mood mellow. Feel-ing on top of the world? Now’s the time for a jam toThe Killers or Switchfoot.

There’s music for any mood, and some tunes changedepending on when I listento them. Be it classical, 80’srock or the quintessentialBeatles, there’s music foreveryone. For a change, I

nd new stuff on Pandora.com, it’s amazing.

Rhythm of the Night Cleaning, working out, doing homework or juststaring off into space, musicis there. I use country musicto get my mind off mychores while sweeping thekitchen. Then instrumentalmelodies help me to focuswhile wrestling with tortur-ous math homework, androck music is an energizerwhile working out. And thenthere’s crazy techno and

movie soundtracks to jamto while I’m just dancingaround in my room with noone else around. Of courseit’s great to just let loose tothe sounds of Billy Idol orMoulin Rouge.

Both Sides Now Not only do I listen tomusic, but I also love to

play the ute, in band.Playing the ute gives mea feeling of such power and

joy. Power that I can usemy instrument to inspirefeelings in others, no matterhow small or eeting thosefeelings are, and joy becauseas much as I love listeningto music I also love beingthe rst to play something.

Though I have not yetcomposed something on myown, someday I want to, just for fun. When the whole band plays together and allI can hear is music, not thecommon sounds of peopleand machines, it feels likeanything can happen.

Rock and Roll Music From Billy Idol to Yel-lowcard, The Beatles toRelient K and Willie Nelsonto Jessica Andrews. I lovemusic for itself, not becauseit’s this genre or that, a soloartist or a large group ofmusicians. Music is music. And though my tastes arenot as diverse as my dad’s-

surf tunes, trance and Swed-ish kraut rock too-I’ll listento almost anything you puton the stereo. Some of myfavorite CDs are the Returnof the King soundtrack forit’s evocative melody andRelient K CDs for theirsingable songs and strangetitles. Fact : my favorite in-strumental song is the laserdance from Oceans’s 12 .Hands down. Fact 2 : I trulydespise screamo, trance andhard-core rap music. I dohave my limits.

Lights and Sounds Music on the radio isconvenient and fun, butlittle can compare to seeinga band live. With only three

concerts under my belt I’mstill a rookie, but not forlong. So far, I’ve seen theDixie Chicks, Yellowcardand The Killers, and there’sstill plenty of awesome bands left. Because seeinga band live is an intoxicat-ing and exciting experience. And plus its great exercisetoo, two-for-one! And no,I’m not an all-out scream-ing and throwing-things fan,

I likeactuallyhearingthe band,unlikesome.
