Attached please find some sample pages regarding my new James Cook philatelic publication. Page numbers in the attached promotion are not actual pages numbers from the publication. The publication is in TWO volumes. The two volumes are case bound (hard cover) with pages sewn and stitched together, in full colour. There are just over 500 printed pages in large USA letter size (landscaped). After getting quotes to print the book locally in Australia, it became evident that due to the weight of the publication (between two and three kilograms), postage was going to be too expensive to distribute the books from Australia. I have elected to go through a USA printer with a wide distribution network to achieve reasonable prices. The pricing is on the last page of the attached file, in US dollars. This is a not for profit publication, so prices are at cost of production and distribution. It is more expensive for me to personally receive and distribute books. All books will be distributed direct from the printer. I recommend for those living outside of North America to pay the extra US $10 (or less) for Express post, as it is quick and tracked. Ordering: To order you need to send me an email with the following details: Full name and address, including State, Postcode, and Country. Number of books being purchased (note that one book consists of both Volumes One and Two). Advice on which payment option you are using below. Please note that I am one individual processing these orders, and I work full time in a very time- consuming job. Orders will be processed in the order that they come in, but it could be days before I get to process any order depending on my time constraints. I will not start the process of fulfilling any orders until after 21 February 2020. All orders that I have received (including payment in full) by that weekend should be processed over that weekend. Payment options: I am making no money on this publication, so can only accept the following payment methods: 1. PayPal via “Send Money to Friends and Family” and only in US dollars (not the Australian equivalent). The printer is paid in US dollars, so I lose on exchange rate conversion fees if you do not pay me in US dollars – your money will be immediately refunded if PayPal payment is received any other way. Payment to be made to my email address: [email protected] 2. Payment to my personal bank account in Australian dollars only. The exchange rate to use for the month of February 2020 is 66 cents to the dollar. I will advise March rates in the future. If you want this option, please ask for my bank details. Note this option is only available to Australian residents or those with an Australian bank account (international banks transfers are not accepted unless you add AUD $25 to cover my banking fees);

Attached please find some sample pages regarding my new James Cook philatelic publication. Page numbers in the attached promotion are not actual pages numbers from the publication.

The publication is in TWO volumes.

The two volumes are case bound (hard cover) with pages sewn and stitched together, in full colour. There are just over 500 printed pages in large USA letter size (landscaped).

After getting quotes to print the book locally in Australia, it became evident that due to the weight of the publication (between two and three kilograms), postage was going to be too expensive to distribute the books from Australia. I have elected to go through a USA printer with a wide distribution network to achieve reasonable prices.

The pricing is on the last page of the attached file, in US dollars. This is a not for profit publication, so prices are at cost of production and distribution.

It is more expensive for me to personally receive and distribute books. All books will be distributed direct from the printer. I recommend for those living outside of North America to pay the extra US $10 (or less) for Express post, as it is quick and tracked.

Ordering:

To order you need to send me an email with the following details:

Full name and address, including State, Postcode, and Country.

Number of books being purchased (note that one book consists of both Volumes One and Two).

Advice on which payment option you are using below.

Please note that I am one individual processing these orders, and I work full time in a very time-consuming job. Orders will be processed in the order that they come in, but it could be days before I get to process any order depending on my time constraints. I will not start the process of fulfilling any orders until after 21 February 2020. All orders that I have received (including payment in full) by that weekend should be processed over that weekend.

Payment options:

I am making no money on this publication, so can only accept the following payment methods:

1. PayPal via “Send Money to Friends and Family” and only in US dollars (not the Australian equivalent). The printer is paid in US dollars, so I lose on exchange rate conversion fees if you do not pay me in US dollars – your money will be immediately refunded if PayPal payment is received any other way. Payment to be made to my email address: [email protected]

2. Payment to my personal bank account in Australian dollars only. The exchange rate to use for the month of February 2020 is 66 cents to the dollar. I will advise March rates in the future. If you want this option, please ask for my bank details. Note this option is only available to Australian residents or those with an Australian bank account (international banks transfers are not accepted unless you add AUD $25 to cover my banking fees);

Page 2: Volume One - rfrajola.com

3. Mint Unhinged recent (not old) Australian postage stamps. This option is only available for those living outside of Australia who cannot use PayPal. Stamps can be mailed to me by yourself, or mailed direct to me from the Australian Philatelic Bureau if you prefer, using your account with the Bureau. Only “International Post” stamps are accepted (wording on stamps), and preferably in denominations of $3.20 (see image below of one current issue available to be currently purchased). Again, the February 2020 exchange rate is 66 cents to the dollar. You can include any mint Australian stamps for rounding up to the correct value.

If you live in a country other than those listed in the promotional attachment, email me for a direct quote. You can get an indicative price from those listed.

The book is published under my own personal ISBN. I trust that you find enjoyment and value in this publication. It is a subject matter not previously treated in philatelic literature.

Kind regards

Reid was the owner of Honolulu's only stamp store in 1928. These FDCs were produced by Wichmans, a leading jewellery store in Hawaii. Most covers are addressed to Mr. Merle M Johnson, the manager of Wichmans. This was the first and only cachet made by Reid. Four different varieties exist as illustrated. Two with text "Captain Cook Sesqui-Centennial" at top (Silver & Gold) and two with text at base (Gold and Copper).

Less than 100 of these FDC were made in total. It is not known the exact quantities of each variety however. The embossed bust of Cook in the cachet is taken from the obverse of the Hawaii Sesquicentennial silver half dollar struck in 1928 by the US Bureau of Mint for the 150th anniversary of Cook's landing in Hawaii. Any colours within the coat of arms and ribbons are decorated by hand at a later date and not part of the FDC issue.

Cook recorded in his journal that he was now fully satisfied that the Russian Staehlin map published 1774 of the North Pacific was erroneous, with an imaginary island of Alaschka. Cook had proven it to be the American continent, with no access to a Northwest Passage. He then weighed anchor on 17 September 1778 to head south. "In honour of Sir Fletcher Norton, Speaker of the House of Commons,... I named this inlet Norton’s Sound." 15 Sep 1778, James Cook, Journals Vol II, 486.

Burroughs drew an original map cachet and then had a

rubber stamp of it cut. He would then use this rubber

stamp design as the primary map outl ine for many of

his cachets, before adding extra detai l in ink by hand.

Folded US Geological Survey map of the Hawaiian IslandsThe death of James Cook: The death of Cook could be an accident of fate. Cook had originally gone ashore on 14 February 1779 to take the King hostage, as had been past practice over many years successfully, in seeking the return of the Discovery’s cutter that was stolen overnight. The old King however refused to come, creating a scene. Cook did not want bloodshed among the natives, so abandoned the idea.

Cook then safely returned to the shore, to return to the boat, without any danger. However, one of the boats in the bay had opened fire upon some canoes, unfortunately killing a Chief of the first rank. The news of this death spread quickly. The natives quickly dressed for war, arriving at the shore where Cook was, with spears and stones. Cook attempted to de-escalate the situation but the natives continued to threaten violence.

The pages shown here are NOT the actual exhibit pages unless specified. The Title Page herewith, which is the full actual exhibit page, is compressed over two pages. The exhibit is large, and would take 128 pages to reproduce in standard page format. What is shown are extracts of images/text from a sample of exhibit pages. As the largest part of the exhibit

includes covers already documented in this publication, the exhibit pages shown here will focus on those which have minimal or no representation in the main chapters of this book.

The plan at right provides the structure of the larger exhibit.
